“Look at countries like Japan and South Korea, where they have very low levels of COVID-19 deaths as well as very low levels of adult obesity,” said Tim Lobstein, an expert advisor to the World Obesity Federation and visiting professor at Australia’s Sydney University who co-led the report.
“They have prioritised public health across a range of measures, including population weight, and it has paid off in the pandemic.”
By contrast, the report found that in the United States and Britain, for example, both COVID-19 death rates and obesity levels were among the highest.

This report is very amateur if it’s the same one I saw yesterday. It neglects to mention that the countries they chose to represent lower BMI also had extremely fewer cases. It measures deaths per 100k population, rather than case to death ratio.
Now I have no doubt that obesity is linked to poorer outcomes. But they measured it totally incorrectly and inflated the figures as a result

"Yes, there is a link between it and covid."
Wasn't that long ago that there was a link between cancer and chocolate.
I tend to take these tenuous soundbites with a very large pinch of salt. |

"What’s the debate? Surely being obese and being impacted more severely by a respiratory condition is not exactly surprising. "
Would be very surprising for me. I'm fat. But my vital capacity and peak flow are like those of an athlete. Ditto resting heart rate. Liver and kidney function at the very top of the scale according to blood tests just two months ago.
Not every fat person wheezes. Right after I got my vaccine jab I took a three hour walk. All 21 stone of me. |

Sounds like you've been lucky so far. How come you've had the vaccine already? |

In my spare time I'm carer for several people who are CEV. And this area seems to be galloping through the priority lists. |
