Continuing this thread because its simply an interesting discussion.
If you want an exact figure of Covid-19 stats.
Go check out UK gov. Notifiable diseases for 2020.
The numbers are there for you to see. If anyone's bored an NOT horny lol.
Maybe they can go through each week and tot up the covid numbers for the year.
Might just twist ypur melon though. Or not lol.  |

Except that SARS-CoV-2 infection isn’t a notifiable disease: odd that any cases are included in the NOIDS report.
The Govt’s reported figures are a good enough approximation (includes all deaths within 28 days; excludes deaths *from COVID* who survive a few weeks on ICU and then die.)
Recommendation:
Wear a mask
Wash your hands
Keep your distance
Make sure you have both vaccinations
....and then we can get back to meeting, clubs etc all the sooner  |

SarsCov2 isn't a notifiable disease because its a virus. Not a disease. Covid-19 is the disease as a result of SarsCov2 infection.

So the previous poster made the common mistake. I'm not sure what your point is here. It's a notifiable disease, it's being notified. As seen in the reports.

Response to a freedom of information request around this question:
"PHE can confirm it does hold the information you have requested.
Figures published in NOIDS reports represent the number of notifications of
notifiable diseases PHE has received from clinicians in that week. The cases may or
may not be subsequently confirmed by PHE and may not represent the total number
of cases of notifiable diseases in the UK that week.
The Statutory Notification of Infectious Diseases (NOIDS) is a process allowing
registered medical practitioners to notify PHE of a suspected case of a notifiable
disease. These are based on clinical suspicion alone and as such a proportion of
these are likely not to be the suspected infection. Laboratory confirmed cases of
notifiable diseases are collected by a separate national laboratory reporting system.
These two methods of reporting operate independently.
NOIDS reports do not represent the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. The
daily number of laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases, as declared by PHE and by
the Government, can be found at: [URL removed to be Fab-proof]
Please note, cases are the number of people with at least one positive COVID-19
virus test result. If a person has had more than one positive test they are only
counted as one case."

Genuine question as you seem very aware. From what I gather. The adding of covid as a cause of death, only began when covid was added to the notifiable diseases database. Is that correct?
Also. Has anybody looked at the numbers for each month yet? Does that tell a story or not? |

Ok, to be clear:
SARS-CoV-2 (aka COVID-19), a virus, has many nasty effects, including COVID pneumonitis, from which many of my patients have died, both within and outside the current UK Govt definition of within 28 days of a positive test.
This is akin to HIV (aka HTLV-3) being the retrovirus that causes AIDS.
However, neither SARS-CoV-2 infection nor HIV infection is a notifiable disease. This is a specific list of infectious diseases (including TB, leprosy, food poisoning and malaria) that *must* be reported to the Consultant for Communicable Disease Control (CCDC) by a medical practitioner, on pain of a fine, imprisonment or both.

Not really tbh (sorry  last I saw was SARS-CoV-2 is the virus. Covid-19 is the condition as a result of the virus. In the gov notifiable diseases, covid is listed  |

Covid-19 was added to the notifiable diseases list at the very start of March 2020. The first recorded UK death from Covid-19 was on 2nd March 2020, so there's no lag/delay in it becoming notifiable.
Do you understand the purpose of the notifiable diseases list? It's to help PHE track disease outbreaks and try to reduce or mitigate public health concerns. It's not there to record deaths etc. there's a different system for that. Only medical professionals can report directly to PHE but the majority of people testing positive for the virus that causes Covid-19 have been self-reports by people presenting at a testing centre or doing home screening. |
