Like with any vaccination program the parents give consent.
A 2 month old can't give consent to the 1st MMR or any medical treatment, so should we not give it to them?

It's a difficult one, there must be an acceptable process for testing of treatments for kids... otherwise there wouldn't be ANY kids medications.
Obviously the vaccines have been tested by 100's of millions of adults world wide, so the medical community is pretty sure that it's safe and shouldn't pose any risk to children.

Looking at it from a logical point of view. There are children who are clinically vulnerable to Covid so it would make sense to conduct trials on healthy children.
I can see why it’s an emotive issue though.

I see where you are coming from OP but it will be parental consent not the child’s, although I know my teenager would have a say in the matter.
The part that confused me with this story was 300 in the trial, as many as 240 children will receive the covid vaccine - and the others a control meningitis jab - when the trial gets under way
I’m bemused why the other 60 are getting a meningitis jab or are they seeing if a jab we already give to children protects them from covid ? |

The part that confused me with this story was 300 in the trial, as many as 240 children will receive the covid vaccine - and the others a control meningitis jab - when the trial gets under way
I’m bemused why the other 60 are getting a meningitis jab or are they seeing if a jab we already give to children protects them from covid ? "
They always give a placebo or different type of vaccine in trials to some people to see if the vaccine is effective but I don't know enough about it but I know this is common practice. |

I can't remember which trial it was but one of the vaccine trials some people were given obviously the vaccine and others were given an arthritis drug.
Again not sure why. |

The 60 (+/-) will receive the meningitis vaccine acting as an active control group.
MenACWY vaccine is already offered to 13 - 15 year olds (so those that have already had it will not be included in the trials).
The side effect profile is already know and can be matched against that seen in recipients of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine as using a standard control of saline tends to introduce confounding and bias into the study (saline injections are not typically associated with sore arms, headache and fever)
As vaccines can be expected to produce similar side effects the study participants will be unable to guess which they have received (they remain blinded in the study) and are less likely to alter their subsequent health behaviour (social distancing, masks etc.) in the community following vaccination.
the 300:240/60 split is a statistically derived 'power calculation' for the study to ensure that the results can produce data that can be interpreted with a high degree of certainty that those results cannot have occurred by chance.

Thanks, that made a bit of sense so the 60 are in the teenager group likely. I just couldn’t understand why meningitis would be given to the younger ones who would have already had it. |
