I haven't known anybody who has caught it recently in hospital except people that work there.
Last March and April a few friends and work colleagues had relatives in hospital the caught it there. |

It is happening still. Up here the nurses are not getting tested. My friend is a bank nurse and picks up shifts in a few hospitals and works in all different wards. Covid is bound to spread amongst patients due to this alone. |

Yes I guess its inevitable for it to spread in hospitals.
I am surprised that they are not getting tested because I thought it was mandatory for staff to have at least a weekly test. |

That's appalling. The Scottish govt rolled out before end of last year/Jan this year, the lateral flow kits - self testing twice weekly - kit is supplied enough to cover 12 weeks for each individual. Acute ward staff should be undergoing once weekly PCR testing and now SG introduced clinical/nursing staff to have both PCR once weekly AND the LFD once weekly. The care home staff and any agency personnel visiting get tested before undertaking any tasks. Might be worthwhile getting in touch with NHS HQ at Waverley Gate, Edinburgh. |

Obviously depends on health boards."
I’d be curious to know which health board isn’t complying because that’s massive.
The two I work between (albeit I’m wfh) both have regular staff testing. If they’re in breach of that I’d love to know so I can flag it up. |

I personally know 2 nurses who caught it at work. Both only had mild symptoms. |

She should raise it as an issue, just don't think it's helpful to imply 'up here' nurses are not getting tested when that's clearly untrue. If your friend feels unsafe she should raise this with her union, infection control team and the board she works for. |

2 ~ 1 went in for something else caught it and died. My uncle went in for a suspected heart attack, turns out he needs a triple bypass. Tested positive whilst in hospital, sent home to recover and needs to have 2x negative tests before he can get a bed in a London hospital for his op. |

"How many people do you know who have caught covid whilst in hospital?. I know several of which 2 sadly died. There must be loads more i am guessing."
Nationally it has been around 22% but that figure is massively skewed by the fact the majority of these have been NHS workers including months where they where the small percentage who where being regularly tested.
The chance of a patient being infected is less than 1 in 100. |

Absolute crap, you can’t step into an ICU ward without being tested every 2 days. Likewise general nurses are being given lateral flow tests for regular home use. |

Hey OP,
Just to clarify if she is a bank nurse, I assume she is coming through an agency?
If so I have a feeling it’s an admin error as the trust wont have her listed as an employee, so maybe have a word with the agency?

Just checked with my former colleagues. In my old trust radiographers are going on to ICU (and everywhere else) with nothing more than a daily temp check. Seems the rules vary from trust to trust... |

Sure sure but most towns now have access to walk in testing.. If I was going to see someone elderly as an example I'd go and get tested before hand to make sure I wasn't going to give it to them. Is it that its not on their doorstep that is preventing them or is it that they don't want to take action themselves to get tested and need it to be provided in their place of work? |

I really do not know. It is all crazy. I get tested weekly but usually wait 4days for my results. By this time i have worked 2 or 3 shifts which means if i were positive i could have passed it on during this time. |

Anyone in contact with patients is being given lateral flow tests to use on an ongoing basis, nobody needs to get sent anywhere. Everyone from our consultants to our cleaners get them... likewise any bank staff we have in are tested prior to beginning their shift. It’s a 30 minute self test and they have been purchased and delivered across the NHS in there millions.
It’s pretty standard practice across trusts from my understanding.
I’m not apologising as to be honest your statement sounds like utter codswallop, no NHS front liners are operating on a if you have symptoms system and as such I find your statement is actually quite damaging to public perception. It’s feeding the myth that it’s more dangerous to seek help at hospitals than stay away... that is completely untrue and very damaging as we’ve seen with many none covid related conditions.
As a healthcare professional I’d suggest you are actually failing in your duty of care by publically painting that picture. |

"It is happening still.
In care homes but not in general hospital it seems.
WOW! I guess I assumed that that was the same policy seems not which is shocking.
Iv got a friend who is a mental health nurse and she was twice weekly tests so I just thought it was the same for everyone everywhere in the country.
I would have thought so too but my bank nurse friend said the nurses are not tested and she has not had one since joining the bank in May.
Hey OP,
Just to clarify if she is a bank nurse, I assume she is coming through an agency?
If so I have a feeling it’s an admin error as the trust wont have her listed as an employee, so maybe have a word with the agency?
Just a thought

There’s Scottish nurses on here saying otherwise, I also have to say we have 12 transferred staff helping us currently from North of the border, all fell into our testing system seamlessly and even arrived with their lateral flow tests in hand.
As I said previously, posting in a fashion that paints scottish trusts as a hotbed for infection and transmission is pretty wreckless... you should realise anyone reading your words with a serious undiagnosed illness may choose on what you are pushing to delay seeking assistance. That is pretty unforgivable given the lengths trusts are going to ensure that help is both available and safe. |

Absolutely this... it’s within our national practice guidelines and temporary contracts alongside the need for us to offer them vaccination.
It’s a nationwide policy and one that is regularly updated and checked. |

Just for transparency OP... you say you are a frontline healthcare worker?
What’s your role and in what scenario are you working?
For clarity, I’m a donning/doffing warden for the ICU in one of Manchester’s Major Trusts. I also have to take responsibility for staff, relative and patient infection control so this is a subject that falls directly on my role. |

Just to quote directly from Glasgow’s trust re: lateral testing:
“in the first instance all clinical students on placement, porters, cleaners, maintenance staff, volunteers, chaplains, healthcare scientists, Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), doctors, nurses, bank/agency staff” are provided with tests. Depending on department they will do these 2-3 times a week.
As stated previously, I find your posts details to be entirely false and to be blunt utterly wreckless coming from someone charged with the well-being of patients. |

Just to add:
Lateral testing has been freely available for:
care at home – LFD or PCR testing
sheltered housing and housing with multiple occupancies – LFD testing
adult day centres/ adult day care services – LFD testing
personal assistants (providing care and support to adult clients within social care ) – LFD testing
Since the second week in January, LFD is widespread in Glasgow as suspected.
It’s been in use by the Glasgow trusts and care system since 10th December.
A quick google of “lateral flow testing Glasgow” will clearly show all the above. I can see from the Glasgow trusts page they operate the identical system that we do in terms of registering your test results which means they will be testing multiple times per week for anyone in a patient facing role.
Why fabricate such tosh OP? Does your need for online attention really warrant spreading lies that could harm others.
Even If there was a flaw in the system... I’d raise it with the trust or my employer, not post a sweeping statement covering all scottish nurses on a swinging site.
Utter madness, in truth I’m not even sure if you know what a LFD test is from your previous posts.

Thank you for this, the post has upset me more than I care to explain herd. I'm not saying there will not be issues but to imply no nurses up here are being tested is just nonsense and an affront, NHS Scotland are, like other countries, doing all in their power to get control of this situation and as mentioned if anyone has exoerience/evidence to the contrary then please, report it in the appropriate way. |

Here’s a thought for you OP.
It’s estimated 2,300 cancer cases a week go undiagnosed in this country due to covid-19.
Over half of those figures are attributed to our ED departments seeing 30% of their usual patient numbers.
That is entirely due to fictitious rumours surrounding your chances of infection/death in hospital, it scares the vulnerable and those in desperate need of help away.
Your post is a prime example of the thousands of posts which added together create that myth and in turn kill thousands.
You should be utterly ashamed... if you work in healthcare.... perhaps resign and let someone with a bit more social responsibility take your role.
And yes, like the Glasgow Nurse I’m fkn disgusted. |

I’m not questioning the Covid hospital transmission stats, I’m not saying it’s right or wrong on the hospital admission decisions. I am saying I know people that would under normal circumstances have been admitted into hospital a week ago. That is the reality of this pandemic, at least locally. |

Testing is selective.
You have to be in the right staff group to qualify for it.
Work in health, patient fronting, have worked throughout the pandemic, yet to be tested.
When vaccines were being rolled out, told our staff group was low priority and we'd be fine as long as wear PPE. |

Is that your conclusive basis to say Nurses up here aren’t being tested?
Lateral flow testing for all frontline workers was approved in the scottish parliament in mid November. It became compulsory for all trusts to provide testing provision in line with NHS England’s policy.
So, your friend working in that system with that knowledge just has a gossip to their mate on fab swingers and confirms no scottish trusts are doing testing despite the fact they’ve all gone to the trouble of updating their websites to deliver all the information for staff to get, do and record their freely available tests.
If that truly was the case...
1) wouldn’t your friend be demanding where her test was through the trusts management?
2) why isn’t the scottish press going beserk after hearing from hundreds of nurses screaming about the lack of testing?
3) why aren’t the NHS in stock of the lateral testing kits despite being supplied them in their 100’s of thousands and being at a stage where it’s very obvious from the press that their use is now widespread within the care sector, social work etc?
P.S. what’s PPE got to do with testing? Your statement makes no sense.

She needs to speak to her line manager ASAP tbh.
If she’s breaching testing protocol, repeatedly, and not flagging it up then she’s failing in her duty. Especially if she’s going between hospitals.
No-one I spoke with today backed up it happening so there’s either Chinese whispers, someone is pulling your chain or misunderstanding.
Either way hopefully anyone who read it are now reassured that Scottish hospitals are NOT full of untested staff running around. |

If the patient had a positive test within 28 days of death it will be noted on their death certificate. There are ways of listing ongoing conditions on a death certificate and that doesn’t mean the person automatically is included in died from... stats.
My husband died of kidney cancer. His diabetes was still noted on his death certificate. When I die, even if I get hit by a bus, mine will show that I’ve had asthma and narcolepsy. That’s just how it works. |

Testing is of 2 forms in my board.
Self testing by LFT and PCR by Occ Health.
Not every staff group qualifies for LFTs although all will be tested by occ health if have symptoms.
I am not saying that scottish hospitals are full of untested staff but the testing protocols are not the same for all staff groups.
It is entirely possible to be untested, work in different health centres, hospitals and even visit care homes. And yes it has been repeatedly mentioned to management. |

So what you’re confirming is all scottish nurses have testing available in some form?
Out of interest, who does qualify for LAVA in your trust?"
I have no idea if all nurses do.
I know, for instance, that in our board, those involved in vaccinating are not yet tested.
Exactly who all qualifies, I am unsure, and there can be a difference between qualifies and who actually receives. |

Because they are subject to routine lateral flow testing... |

Knowing the rules governing the vaccination centres and their code of practice which are enforced and audited nationally I find that incredibly hard to believe.
Those administering the jabs either within vaccination centres or indeed those charged with the duty within a hospital setting are required to test every other day/3 times a week.
We have staff who provide shifts at the ethihad and in their words they are shit hot on it... there’s also no national divides on the testing centres, they all follow the same model and protocol.
There’s no shortage of LAVA kits, the NHS as a whole is swamped with them so likewise I don’t buy into there being a difference between qualifying for and getting.
Anyone in our role would for the sake of all make a major issue in a scenario where they didn’t get their test as we did early in the pandemic regarding missing PPE etc. If the scenario you and the OP suggests did exist, why aren’t we all reading about it in the press?
