Scottish Schools - Sturgeon Loves Lockdown
Jump to: Newest in thread
So, a very small number of Scottish school children - at early ages going back on 22nd.
Ridiculous - should be all pupils.
We're at less cases than when schools were shut before Christmas and there have been other restrictions since then.
Shutting schools made zero difference then.
Add to that the huge numbers of vulnerable now not vulnerable and we will never get back to where we were over Christmas, I'd wager that if we ended all lockdown right now then we'd be fine.
This isn't just about schools, opening schools helps the economy massively.
Sturgeon just capitulating to the largely SNP voting teacher community. |

Bollox.
If it was all pupils, then by that instance, it would include Unis. Look what happened last time.
We are not through this by a long way, especially with the other more viral strains.
Ease restrictions too soon and we are back at the start.
We have been there and done that |

Or maybe the variants might be greater threat and we can't take the chance.
Maybe the (I saw this yesterday) 0.73% of the UK population with full vaccination is insufficient to defend from anything?
Maybe learning from the disaster of opening up too soon?

Cases rose exponentially a few weeks after schools opened in September. Only started to fall a few weeks after they closed...despite this current lockdown being anything but and many people not complying anyway.
Kids always have been and still are super spreaders of just about any disease.
Harsh but true. |

All early education settings plus P1-3 pupils is by no means a very small number of pupils.
Personally I think it is too soon to be sending any back, but at least they have learned something from last time & realised that it needs to be a much more gradual process of opening up schools this time.
I'd have preferred they keep schools closed until Easter though and to try to get the number of infections much lower (and the number of people vaccinated much higher).
Whatever she does someone will complain.

Is it really going well? Many children simply aren't engaging with the online learning - they don't have the support from their parents. You know they type of parent who, when at school, couldn't be bothered themselves. Other parents are struggling to help their kids with their work whilst trying to get on with their own work.

"Would working through the summer holidays make any difference, or have I not given it enough thought?"
i doubt the teachers (or kids) will want to work through the summer |

I'm absolutely cream crackered. It's been so tiring remote teaching. I need a break. We also don't get paid for the summer holiday so that would have to be resolved too. |

"I think it's too soon to bit if they're going to do it it should be very gradual. I'd of thought the exam years would of gone back first tbh. "
Younger kids going back to school means parents can go back to work.
Also apparently in general more high school kids go on buses to school so I assume that’s a big area of close contact |

As with so many decisions in this pandemic, it's a case of choosing which is likely to cause least harm.
There are no easy solutions and folk will always say how much better it would be if an alternative path was taken. Especially with the benefit of hindsight. |

It was at this moment the absence of any sense became painfully obvious..."
That is possibly the most succinct reply I’ve ever read. |

I can't speak for England but in Scotland both reopening the schools and closing them again made no discernible difference. |

Scotland rise was slower than the rest of the uk but the rise in cases definitely started when schools and universities went back. |

Could you link to any data supporting your assertion? |

I'm fairly sure the figures shot up when schools reopened? |
