A Christians approach to covid
Jump to: Newest in thread
Had a workman round giving me a quote for some outside building work. We got chatting about the virus and he explained that as a Christian he had put his life into Gods hands so continues to work with confidence as he believes God will protect him. He then quoted something from the bible about swords. I wish it were that simple but wondered if anyone else shared these views. |

No, I don't share those views. Although during a chat with a lady at work she started to talk about covid being an act of god and how he will protect the good. What a load of old bollocks!! I told her that I didn't want to have that conversation with her and walked off. |

Well if he can do so without putting anyone else in harm's way then that's his prerogative and no harm done.
However if he's doing so without following guidance regards masks, social distance, etc....
Then he's no better than the nutbag conspiracy theorists! |

This reminds me of what happened to the son of my sister's pastor. He had extremely bad asthma but said God would protect him and he would not die , as did his father.. The day after a very foggy night, he was found dead from an asthma attack. His God did not protect him. He was only in his early twenties. |

I'm not a Christian, but when I was we were told the story of a devout believer stuck in a flood who refused a boat, a helicopter, a life jacket, and drowned. God would save him.
"My god, my god, why did you not save me?"
"My dear beloved son, I sent you a helicopter, a boat, and a lifejacket. Why did you refuse?" |

The subtext being all those that have died were bad people...what all of them? |

Sometimes I admire their faith, sometimes I shake my head watching this fatalistic approach. I grew up in a very religious family and experienced this kind of faith and what impact it has to health, family and life.
I am an agnostic now, but for discussion I like to cite a good advice
"You shall not tempt the Lord, your God" (Matthew 4:7)

As a practicing Christian I totally agree with this. I remember the priest actually quoting this in church many years ago! |

What's the difference between a Christian and a practicing Christian? |

This particular woman has since the word go worn an exempt lanyard, after that chat I doubt she is. |

I'm not sure there is any difference in the two really.
Probably the same as the difference between a Doctor and a Practicing Doctor or a Lawyer and a Practicing Lawyer?
---
Or to give a slightly more affirmative answer, I suppose some people may describe themselves as nominally being Christian (their faith may have lapsed) whereas somebody else may say that they are a Practicing Christian (still have faith, go to church, pray etc?)

Correct. They infect their elderly parents, who end up in hospital |

Yes...choosing not to live in fear is a good thing,,doesn’t mean you won’t get sick or die , or those you love won’t , but even in the worst situations you can stay confident and not lose hope, Mother Teresa,,Victor Frankl, Nelson Mandela are good examples |

Church occasionally pops into my head
Basically we were taught, God gives us many things: including scientists. |

It's a bit of a limited perspective as God seems to allow awful things to happen, even in places of worship.
He may have a slightly optimistic view of what's likely to happen during nuclear war etc, should he ever face atrocities |

Where does it say that in the bible ? Pretty sure it doesn’t say that , quite the opposite , no ones immune to suffering, amd Christians should expect to suffer more!!!! You been reading the Facebook version ? |

I hope he was still taking the precautions! And following the rules. Having a faith that God will protect him is fine but It also it says in The Bible that we need to follow the laws of the land.
My church As well as many others Along have decided along with many others That even know they can hold worship they have decided not team because they feel because the congregation is mainly older it is not worth the risk so continues online.
My pastor also sent out an email recently praising God and thanking him for the vaccine.
I really like the example somebody used of something they returned about sending a God helicopter to help.
I often feel the same when people won't allow themselves or their children medical intervention because they will pray for God to give a solution or save them, when often I think well maybe he has because there is a treatment for that condition or illness. |

I don't believe in God, but I'll pretend... what if God's way of protecting people was to use scientists to tell people to stay home and wait for a vaccine?

And if God created man and man made the vaccine, then surely that's heaven sent?
Same as anything man made that religious people deny that saves lives. |

Most religious folks don't deny science or medicine. For example the Vatican has approved the Covid vaccine (despite being derived from a cell line from an aborted foetus) and The Pope had himself has been vaccinated and encouraged Catholics worldwide to do the same. |

I don't believe what he says myself.
I know someone that has friends in Egypt that said Allah will protect them. Many have died, but the sad part is those that didn't die said those that had died had been unworthy
Myself, I reckon I'll trust in the Universe |

I'd say it's more disrespectful for someone to thrust their views upon you uninvited than to make it clear you don't want to have that conversation. |

Let's just imagine, for a moment, that there's a God.
Maybe, just maybe, even though He's perfect, he feels like humanity is fucked up - AGAIN - and he's decided on a virus, rather than a flood, this time.
Only kidding. It's not His fault. He doesn't exist. Humanity is more than capable of repeatedly fucking itself up - mostly to men being right cunts. No need to blame it on anything else. |

Christianity is the biggest and longest cult there every was, its away back when it was first created to control people, men in power used it to put the fear into people, women were persecuted, humiliated punished all because the local minister fallowed a book that was written by men along time ago, the interpretation of this said book is all down to the reader and how he wants to convey the, message. My father I thought was an intelligent man was a minister and we were beaten as children, and preach about the sins of people. It's a way to ensure people follow blindly and didn't question the lunacy of it all. To question it brings the wrath of the believer, to say you have another faith, you are shot down. Nah its all a big con and anyone on here who says they are a practicing Christian on here are hypocrites sorry, if you follow the bible you sure as hell wouldn't be on a swingers site.. Just saying |

I'm Christian, and not just in name. If practising means actively going to church, then no, only very infrequently since the death of my mother several years ago and onset of both some emotional health issues and family issues (some on here know).
I'm also a believer in science, evolution, free will, compassion, the goodness of man, and the depravity and evil of man.
I don't believe that covid is a plague sent by god. And I don't believe that the "righteous" will be protected by god. If god wants anything, it is for people to take responsibility for their own thoughts and actions. Certainly not to use god as a weapon and shield, as a means to absolve oneself from responsibility. |

How are her views of contraception / abortion relevant ? Sounds like that article was written purely to attack her views , which is fair enough , lead a pathetic selfish life then write an article about someone who’s surpassed you in every single way possible , and attack their beliefs, this is to be expected. |

I’m curious.... where in the bible does it say you can’t join a swingers site?
Sounds like you had a bad experience in a religious cult or something , maybe the bible version you read had been edited or misinterpreted, because a central theme is to question and challenge not blindly follow , the bible even says to ‘test everything that is said’ and even goes on to say ‘test me’ |

The only way to truly understand a book is to read it in its native verse and a faithful reproduction of the original texts.
Thats going to be very hard to do with the Bible as its largely the King James rewrite that is now used and quoted. |

I never read anything that old and can’t read Greek. Only ever read the Message summary version and bits of NIV, and can understand what it’s going on about, you can ask lots of questions to the right people and see it in action fairly easy if you look, it’s not a theoretical / academic thing |

If the concept of God arrived at Fab just today. I guarantee most of you would be saying it was a conspiracy theory postulated by far right lunatics or those who had found a way to monetise it. Magdalene would be called Karen of FaceBook. The very notion of 'normal' people believing in an invisible omnipotent entity would have most of you laughing hysterically.
The presence of God in any sense constantly and irrevocably fails the first test that of 'suffering'.

"Let's not go after peoples religious beliefs. Come on we are better than that surely. Its the height of intolerance and ignorance. "
Is it though?
It is after all a belief not a fact even if its likely that someone called Jesus existed (fact) that he was the son of God is unprovable (a belief).
Religion is given the same protection discrimination wise as Gender and Sexuality when it should not be classed the same.
It should be no more illegal to discriminate against someone for thinking that Manchester United are the greatest football team ever than it is to believe in a God.
Both are just what you may believe along with millions of others but its not fact.
Gods and Prophets
Kings and Queens
Lords and Ladies
All part of a hierarchical system for keeping the masses under control. |

Both are just what you may believe along with millions of others but its not fact.
Gods and Prophets
Kings and Queens
Lords and Ladies
All part of a hierarchical system for keeping the masses under control."
So it's ok to be discriminated against if you are religious? |

"Let's not go after peoples religious beliefs. Come on we are better than that surely. Its the height of intolerance and ignorance.
Is it though?
It is after all a belief not a fact even if its likely that someone called Jesus existed (fact) that he was the son of God is unprovable (a belief).

You see I don't share that belief. But I'm choosing not to insult or belittle you. That's all I'm saying. Let's not be so intolerant. Stronger together |

"I just think there's no need to attack religion. Not protecting yourself or others is ridiculous regardless, and is not supported by most religious beliefs."
Quite.
In fact churches, mosques and temples are doing huge amounts to help people and actively fight against the conspiracy theories.
Many food banks run from religious buildings and my local Sikh temple regularly go out to feed the homeless.
I am atheist but support the right to follow a faith of your choice and cannot deny the good they can do. |

Is it okay to discriminate if you are religious?
Nope
Is it ok to be discriminated against?"
Yes, in certain circumstances its probably okay to discriminate.
I doubt there is a person alive who does not discriminate to some degree or has discriminated in the past. |

"People who believe in religion are as stupid as flat earthers. And people who start sentences with "as a Christian" as the fucking worst. "
As a Christian, I never start a sentence with "as a Christian". (Yes I know, irony. Or satire or something). I also never force my beliefs on others, in fact seldom mention them unless relevant in discussions such as this. I don't attack people who have different beliefs than me.
I do comment on the good or evil that I see in peoples behaviour, but I don't see good/evil as being any kind of supernatural forces. Life is not black and white, it is shades of grey, decisions can be complex, sometimes well meaning choices can have bad results. I suppose at core, unpacking from any specific religious text or framework, I feel that people have a choice to either think about the well-being of others (even if often getting it wrong), or to think only about what they can do to help themselves.
Putting it another way... Just because you're Christian, it doesn't mean that you are christian in behaviour. And you can act with christianity, without needing to be Christian. |

As an atheist, I have no opinion on religion, not can I tell people how to be religious, but a little bit of common sense is required in interpreting the meanings of the stories, 500 yrs ago people thought if they threw someone into a river and they drowned they were pure, but if they floated, they were evil and had to be killed????
This makes no sense, but it's people taking literal meanings out of interlectual teachings |

Only 300 years ago in fact (Mary and Elizabeth Hicks executed as witches in England, 1716). And there are still plenty of people around who would execute the likes of me as being the modern equivalent of witches, as being someone that they use religion for an excuse to persecute, if they thought they could get away with it.

All this talk of religion is not going to help, I recall a man of the Frock once saying "It is the work of the Lord" when something good happened, and the "The Lord works in mysterious ways" when something bad happened
Bless you all and stay safe X |

Yep I wonder if the thousands who died in the 2004 Tsunami thought God would protest them? or the 3000 who died on 9/11? or the passengers who died on the German Wings airliner in March 2015? Or on these days was it Gods day off? |

"Why do people care of someone else believes in something? Has faith? Chooses a religion.? What business is it of anyone else? "
Everything we believe or don't believe is everybody's business. That's the World we share with all those around us. We have a right to comment. We have a right to express. Likewise, we have a right to accept or deny any other notion or idea.
Well in the West we do at least.

Reminds me a bit about the joke where a guy's life is in peril, someone comes to save him but he refuses the help saving that God will save him, this happens twice more. Without help, the guy dies. In heaven he asks God why he didn't save him, God tells that he sent three people, what more did he want?
I don't believe in God OP, but that guy clearly does; maybe he should acknowledge then that God intends to help him by sending him a vaccination? |
