So, someone i know has had the message to self isolate, yet their work place have said if they get a negative test then they need to go back to work. Even though the gov say even with neg test you still need to isolate for the full 10 days. The place they work at is also a gov contractor, but are so short staffed and are trying to force folk back to work.

If an employee's test is negative they can stop self-isolating and return to work as long as they feel well enough, have not had a high temperature for at least 48 hours and provided that they are not a close contact of a confirmed case and that anyone they live with who has symptoms of COVID-19 has tested negative.

That's from HSE

The reason I missed my 1st childs birth was because I had to do the full 14 days isolation at the time when a team member tested positive.

I also couldn't get a test until / if I showed symptoms (that may have changed)

I spoke in depth to track and trace call centre staff and they said the biggest cause of virus spread is employers sending exposed people for tests straight away which will almost always be a negative at that early stage. They then use the negative to get them back working and low and behold 7 days later they would test positive and have been infecting more people at work.

If they've been contacted by track & trace then surely that means they have been identified as a close contact, and as such should self isolate as they've been directed

The must important part of your post "provided they are not a close contact of a confirmed case"

Which the OP may well have been and hopefully he will clarity if he was.

So show the directive from HSE as to why they shouldn't be returning to work.

I know. I was showing this to clarify either way. As another poster said, if t&t have contacted then the chances are that they're a close contact.

No they don't. They say self-isolate until you are symptom free for 48 hours.

No, you are misunderstanding it, you’ve been given the correct advice above, 48 hours symptom free, I know because I’ve just had a negative test myself and that’s the email the NHS has sent me.

thats selective quoting from their guidance specifically for someone who tests positive or has symptoms

if your reason for isolation is being a close contact with a positive case you have to wait 10 days regardless

I am on day 3 of a 10 day isolation due to a close contact having a positive result. It has to be someone in the office as it is the only place I have been to, but because I have the app and have been notified, I am stuck at home. Anyone who doesn’t have the app and has been working in the same area as me is still in the office. Absolutely ridiculous.

But if you got a negative test and were symptom free for 48 hours I think you could go back?

no you can’t ... you have to actually have symptoms first before you can use the symptom free thing ... asymptomatic people are permanently 48 hour symptom free and even if you develop symptoms it can take up to 10 days for them to start which is why they ask you to isolate for 10 days after close contact with a positive case no matter what test results you get

if they know someone in the office has tested positive and they havent all been sent home that’s piss poor management

Yes and it very clearly says that in the track and trace text message you get sent.

If you have had a test because you felt you had symptoms but not been contacted by track and trace and your result comes back negative then yes you can go back out.

If you are contacted by track entrance regardless of a negative test you have to isolate for the full 10 days.

If you feel poorly yourself and test negative, your fine to go back to work after 48 hours symptom free.

If you have been contacted and confirmed a close contact you need to do the 10 days even if you get tested and it’s negative.

I’d definitely be getting unions involved if my workplace weren’t honouring that government guidance x

Definitely especially as it isn't guidance it actually says in the track and trace text message it is enforceable by law.

So if this individual goes back to work and is caught out he will have to face the consequences not the workplace.

Ah ok I stand corrected.

But but but, er, is that ten day wait a sensible and proportionate measure? What percentage of identified close contacts go on to carry Covid as a result?

unless they get symptoms and a test themselves we will never know but the scientists have determined that 10 days is a realistic timeframe that they would expect you to have developed symptoms in that time if you were infected - it used to be 14 but presumably more studies allowed them to reduce it
