DIY. with covid not giving up and restrictions getting tougher is it really essential to change your wallpaper or build that decking you have never had the time to do. I thought getting furloughed or working from home was done to keep us safe not to gather in your local hardware store. dying to decorate! is it worth it? |

"It gives people something to do and keep busy with rather than sitting at home drinking."
Is drinking the only alternative?!!
To answer the OP I think these kinds of places should be click and collect only then people can still get what they need but they don't have to go into the stores. People can't help touching everything and diy shops being open gives people something to do, usually with 3 or 4 other members of the family. Not what you're supposed to be doing atm! |

I think they should be open. If a toilet leaks or the radiator, buying from a DIY store is cheaper than paying for a plumber. With many people having less wages coming in they simply can't afford a plumber.
I don't have issue with people wall papering or decorating whilst at home either. Some people have been furloughed for months at a time, simply changing your living environment, and being productive can have huge mental health benefits. |

Almost all shops that are open including supermarkets sound non essential items along with the essential ones so it is vital that they stay open.
People still need to do essential repairs on their home so as long as people are going to a DIY store for an essential item I don't see the problem if they pick up a few rolls of wallpaper while there there. |

You should not go outside or leave your home unless necessary. That's from the gov website.
I'm not disputing the fact that plumbing supplies etc are essential but fail to see why the items we have mentioned are in any way equal.
Its stretching the rules to suit people's agendas. Its wrong .

I think the likes of these shops that say they are essential to stay open are not. The queues that were snaking around the local B&M at the first lockdown were huge and snaking out of the car park when driving past, now there are no queues but very full car parks so I am guessing they are not social distancing in the actual shop
Everything anyone would ever need for repairs can be bought online

That's the issue, what would be classed as essential to one person may not be classed as essential to another but how is that decided?
Do people have to put together a business case detailing why they require what they wish to purchase and then who would rule on the merits and authorise or refuse entry.
It can't be done. |

I've been waiting a year for my bedroom to be decorated. The paper is stripped, the floor is bare and the light fitting is down.
I have the paper, adhesive and paint, new bedding, light fitting and curtains, but no sandpaper, filler or filling knife.

Why do people persist with this nonsense that the likes of B&Q only sell wallpaper and paint? I needed a new showerhead so rather than wait til the end of the pandemic I went to B&Q and bought one. If folk think it would've been acceptable for me to go without a shower until they deem it acceptable for me to buy one then I have a whole host of swear words ready for them. |

I understand both sides of the argument. The problem being many people don't follow guidelines. I've used this analogy from nearly day one if first lot of restrictions.
Speed limit says 70. Many behave as if it's the target. Their right. This often displays a lack of understanding of what the speed limit is for, a lack of awareness of what's happening around them and lack of respect towards others on the road. The same can be applied to the restrictions.
One could argue doing a project at home helps them focus on something constructive, keeping their minds focus away from wanting to get out. It's productive instead of say watching the goggle box for the latest juicy bit of rubbish and then just gossiping about it on social media. One can even get many of these things delivered from eBay or many hardware stores or suppliers, click and collect is well regulated too.
If we're going to lump in doing DIY projects at home with going out and drinking or going to a restaurant or having a house party or arranging to shag strangers off here then maybe we need to re-evaluate the principles rather than be rule orientated. |

don't get me wrong I do not wish my work to close but when the Scottish government say only tradesmen doing essential maintenance can enter a house and this does not include painting and decorating it gets a bit confusing. we can't even go into a loved ones house but yet we can meet in a shop. It's not just here though is it. It's throughout social media folks opinion that such and such shop should be shut and people shouldn't be allowed to buy this or that. I've read people complain about folk buying biscuits with their shopping because biscuits aren't essential. Folk.cant see beyond the end of their nose in that just because they won't need a biscuit or a DIY shop then nobody should need it. |

How far do we take this then in Supermarkets there are aisles of crisps cakes beer wine spirits sweets. Plenty of things that are not essential should we all have to just exist. People feeling so fed up already take everything away that makes life a bit easier to cope with at the moment and that creates even more depressed people |

no one has said that you can't have one. only a fool would wait until the end of the pandemic. I would even class a shower head as an essential item and happily hand deliver it to the click and collect door for safe collection. this way you can keep your whole host of swear words because we have heard them all before. |

This
I think all the shops that allowed to open have a duty to stop this happening. |

You should not go outside or leave your home unless necessary. That's from the gov website.
I'm not disputing the fact that plumbing supplies etc are essential but fail to see why the items we have mentioned are in any way equal.
Its stretching the rules to suit people's agendas. Its wrong .
You seem a bit stressed out.
Have you tried redecorating?
I hear painting can be very therapeutic and calming"
So can keeping your condescending opinions to yourself.

Is it outwith the guidelines to buy these things?

How far do we take this then in Supermarkets there are aisles of crisps cakes beer wine spirits sweets. Plenty of things that are not essential should we all have to just exist. People feeling so fed up already take everything away that makes life a bit easier to cope with at the moment and that creates even more depressed people "
Breathing for yourself isnt essential when you are on a ventilator. Its a real pity that people see outside the rules set, but by doing so they are increasing lock down and spreading a deadly virus. |

The point is, the shops are open so they must be allowed no matter what any of us think...but we don't all have to agree that they should be open."
And one doesn't have to go and use them simply because they are open. But if we choose not to, we can't expect others to follow that no matter how frustrating. Their choice may be different but we do need to try and get the message across that people need to restrict their movements. |

"I think they should be open.
We are being told to stay at home .
When have the government announced its ok to go out and buy decorating supplies. Why don’t they shut these shops then.."
because there will be some cases where its an emergency like someone mentioned the toilet starts to leak ... trouble is because its open people take that as a sign they can go for a day okt and a wander around because its
we might get to a position where they have to close off aisles for non essential like supermarkets in wales did but i guess its harder to determine what is and is not essential in the likes of b&q |

I agree totally.
My view is there is no need for those shops to be open, essential shops for me are food and pharmacies. If you need anything for your house as an emergency then the WWW is your oyster
All this moving about between shops and browsing for things to do to stop you being bored are not essential for me. If we don't get on top of this it is going to take a lot longer and potentially many more dead and people mixing like this is not going to help |

shielding or not, in a lockdown we should all only have the house and garden , some of us not even a house or garden (lots stuck living and working in 1 bed flats)
nobody is saying don’t do the diy, just saying do it with materials you have at home or can buy online |

To answer the OP I think these kinds of places should be click and collect only then people can still get what they need but they don't have to go into the stores. People can't help touching everything and diy shops being open gives people something to do, usually with 3 or 4 other members of the family. Not what you're supposed to be doing atm!"
Had a load of decking and fencing delivered. Unloaded at the front of the house and we carried it to the back. The other stuff click and collect.
I know you can't just go into Screwfix etc, everything is online. |

as a side thought, do other cities have restaurants and coffee shops with tables sat outside (which the establishment have put there) so that even though its only takeaway if you choose to sit out after thats your own choice?
i had to go to the office today and spotted quite a bit of this on the walk home ... if they arent allowed to serve you at their outside seating area surely access to it should be allowed at all |

We are renovating a house, that we can’t currently live in, needs must.
The sooner we are in the sooner we aren’t squeezing in with family.
To be fair, I ordered paint and wallpaper from b&q and they sent the paint but cancelled my wallpaper order, so now I have to travel there to get it. So if online orders were actually being fulfilled then people wouldn’t need to travel. |

I see your point but I can also see why wallpaper and paint are essential to some.
If I was at home 23 hours out of 24 in our house which was in very poor repair when we first moved in I would have considered it essential
I've been waiting a year for my bedroom to be decorated. The paper is stripped, the floor is bare and the light fitting is down.
I have the paper, adhesive and paint, new bedding, light fitting and curtains, but no sandpaper, filler or filling knife.
It's very depressing going to bed every night in a room like that.

I thought getting furloughed or working from home was done to keep us safe not to gather in your local hardware store. dying to decorate! is it worth it?"
It's a difficult question and I don't know where it ends, it's also not necessary to get a takeaway, you could just cook something, so that is also potentially an unnecessary journey, I'm just not sure where to draw the line to be honest.
I have done a bit of DIY since covid hit, although most of my supplies were ordered online, all the same that still meant somebody had to deliver them to me.
On the other hand I have four family members who have not had any work during this time apart from doing some shifts delivering for Amazon, they are very grateful people do order as it's putting food on their tables.

cheers for all your thoughts. a fair mix I see. just to confirm I am not trying to stop people decorating or gardening but it seems a bit strange that the latest lockdown rules has now included not allowing tradesmen into homes unless its an essential repair and decorating is not included. we can't go inside a loved ones house but we can meet them inside a shop all because the shop sells a small amount of plumbing supplies and light bulbs the rest is home decorating products.
what I can say is I would use click and collect if I was you as the store does not get a decent clean its just to big and I could give you a dozen stories on customers bad habits. we have had several cases of covid in my work only people with app alerts has been made to self isolate even though many more could have been in contact. deep cleaning has only been done in the area the staff has worked.(so we have been told but not witnessed)
so its up to you if you want to browse the store but maybe when you are sitting on the display garden furniture have a look around and I guarantee you will see something that makes you think twice about how safe it is. if not rest assured the seat your sitting on has never been cleaned.
finally. if click and collect or deliverys only was implemented then it may just save the NHS having to hold another dying hand. OK enough said and time for me to get back to my decorating.
stay safe |

So if you are expected to stay at home, you can't work from home and want to keep busy and improve your home surely this is a good thing. You also have to remember that the trade also uses these stores a self employed painter and decorator for instance has had they're only payout so has to make a living somehow. |

It's so people don't go insane stuck at home and have something that's going to keep them actively busy and I went today wasn't busy as usual for the weekend had queuing outside and limited amount of people were let in it would be classified as essential if it's going to keep you busy |

Basic rules of life;
Water
Food
Shelter
Heat
Three of the four are covered DIY. Yes it's loose terms but as it has been said before if you need to fix something to secure one of those three you need the tools and parts to go it. Especially if you cannot afford a trades person.
Does wall paper and come under that. No. But are you going to cordon of all items not essential. No.

I am generally 'at home' for 4 hours on a weekday evening, that time is easy to fill, sometimes I'll be out too so not even 4 hours.
However, filling 16 hours is a little more difficult, especially when it is every single day for months on end. |

I don't believe I'm speaking as if I'm the only one who is going through it. I simply stated that it's easy to fill 4 hours and not so easy to fill 16 hours.
You say you have managed it so that means everyone else should be able to.
Different people need different stimulants to get through any given day, if that means someone needs to be physically busy in the same of some painting of wallpapering then allow them that.
It's really no different to walking to the corner shop and buying some beer/wine. |

Would you rather everyone couped up at hoe with nothing to do? Nothing to put their mind to and suicide/ self harm rates growing uncontrollably ? There's more than 1 pandemic at the moment . Corona and then a mental health pandemic .
What would they normally do when at home? Decorate every week of the year?
They wouldn't necessarily be confined to the same 4 walls for months on end would they though?
But when they are at home they must do something to keep them amused, we don't HAVE to decorate to keep yourself busy
I am generally 'at home' for 4 hours on a weekday evening, that time is easy to fill, sometimes I'll be out too so not even 4 hours.
However, filling 16 hours is a little more difficult, especially when it is every single day for months on end.
We have all been in the same boat, you are speaking as if you are the only one who has needed to fill hours.
We have managed it.
I don't believe I'm speaking as if I'm the only one who is going through it. I simply stated that it's easy to fill 4 hours and not so easy to fill 16 hours.
You say you have managed it so that means everyone else should be able to.
."
No, what I said was if you want to fill your time it doesn't have to be decorating where you have to go out and buy it. It can be other things in the house that you would normally do at home anyway, just that you have more hours to do it in, whether that is physically busy or not.
If people want to decorate fill your boots, but people keep saying "but it is for mental health" It is like a buzz word for doing anything at the minute
For our own mental health we have found lots to do that didn't involve walking around shops
We don't need wine or beer either |

You're right, it doesn't have to be decorating, personally I can't stand it. However, I do know Mrs finds painting rather therapeutic.
It's great that you've found plenty to do to keep your brain active, it really is. I just don't think it's the same for everyone. |

I think from a mental well being aspect, yes it's essential and as long as social distancing is adhered to. |

I agree, what works for one person won't for another.
I think what I am trying to say though is, there must be other things that will occupy a persons mind through a normal every day life. Decorating wouldn't be one that someone would do every week of the year, so we would normally find something else to do with your time instead |

Decorating isn’t for me, but I’m assuming it’s actually getting to finish a project they don’t normally have time to do, a sense of achievement giving them a positive boost and if done for another member of the household, a wonderful gift

"Which is great
I just don't know why people have to play the mental health card when they want to do something, just do it if that's what you want to do and if it is allowed "
couldn’t agree more ... the world and their mother have now developed either a mental health issue or a desire to protect everyone else’s, how often were they considering it before covid? and watch how much the care for everyones mental health disappears when people can get back to their every day life and fill up their time with more fun stuff instead
being bored and having a mental health problem are not the same thing |

Everything you've said in reply to my original comment is all well and good for some people. However, people who are living with mental health problems (diagnosed or not) won't feel the same. Around here we have police blocking off our local country park to stop us from walking around there, we've had a longer lockdown than in England, we live in a village in the middle of nowhere with a tiny park for toddlers. Nothing at all for children of our children's age , nothing for adults to do at all.
If I want to go and buy some supplies to then keep my partners mind occupied and stop her from going backwards and self harming or worse then why shouldn't I be allowed to ?
Shes received 2 phone calls during the whole pandemic and they were only from mind. She's had no help what so ever with her mental health, not even a check up in the last year! Personally I find it disgusting especially as she's diagnosed with certain personality disorders. What works for you doesn't work for her . So yes I will continue to buy supplies so she can decorate and out her mind to things rather than let her mind control her. |

Agreed, MH is used too much as an excuse to be doing something. |

In some cases it may be . In other cases its the complete opposite. Some people play on normal everyday depression and use it to their advantage. Others are the complete opposite and hide their mental health problems from everyone |

"I think they should be open.
" well said mod I can’t wait 3 days for Amazon etc to deliver a set of fuses etc |

Agree!! Doing DIY may be the only thing that stops people dropping into a deep depression. Unfortunately this is the side of lockdown which is being overlooked |

Having spent a few hours maning the door at my shop I have come to the conclusion that it's families that are the issue! Of course if you're a single parent that is different but you still need to consider if your shopping trip is essential.
Families of 2 adults with 1 or more children however do you *really* need to all go in?
Some bollocks I've heard today from families of 4+ are:
"Can we go in as 2 and 2?" No because that is defeating the object. (Had that multiple times)
"We need a big item and she can't carry it on her own" That is what the staff are for, to help you.
"Since when was that a rule?" Our company are minimising numbers in store, it's a requirement to help stop the spread of the virus.
"We just want to browse" We are open for essential shopping only at the moment, that means no browsing.
"We just want to get a coffee" The restaurant has been closed for a while now.
"We want to choose a new item for our pet" Ok, but only 2 of you can go in.
It's hard work, it really is!

I'm really losing patience and tolerance for this and where the fuck is the enforcement. Having had the call today telling my mum is on end of life support, I'm emotional and upset and sick of thoughtless people spreading this virus. Someone have it to her. Someone who didn't mean to but who probably got it doing something innocent and innocuous. This bastard disease tortures some people. A good number of people I saw put today were not essential.. I mean Costa coffee? I implore people. Have a thought before it's too late. |

Going shopping is like a mini super spreader event. People really need to think, think and think again.

Thanks V, I'm still processing it, and appreciate the kindness but that's not the reason for posting. It's the astonishing ease this thing can spread with, the torture that it puts some of its victims through and the ridiculous definition that some people choose for essential. It's hard I get that. But it's a fuck side harder seeing someone you love fighting for every single breath they try and take with the look of fear and terror in their eyes. |

im so sorry to hear this , couldn’t agree more with your points though
if it wasn’t such an invisible disease for so many they wouldn’t behave so selfishly ... for example if it looked like a fog out there you had to pass through and you knew at the other end of it someone might not make it , not a chance people would be regularly shopping as families or browsing for diy ideas and supplies, mental health or not
there might not be a fog you can see yourself walking through, and it might not be a member of your family that doesn’t survive thanks to your trip, but other than that the stories are the same ... how hard is it really to just get stuff online and limit your interaction |
