Dr Michael osterholme, leading scientist on the planet in his field of work, over 45 years experience and his credentials speak for themselves, so when he's live on a US news programme 2 days ago and says
" I'm really scared" about this new variant strain, I think it's time to start really worrying

I've got to admit it's all very esoteric this subject matter, infectious diseases, but Dr Osterholm really lays it all out in matter of fact way.
Its definitely well worth people listening to his appearance on the Joe Rogan show back in March 2019 because he has proved to be pretty accurate.
Good listen and good old YouTube.

"Hes always right. We should have started worrying when the new uk strain was detected"
Given what he said about coronavirus' in his 2017 book I agree.
I also think he is right when he says the UK doesn't have enough evidence yet to really say one way or other that the UK variant isnt more deadly / has more prevalent symptoms. All the can say at this stage is its more infectious. Study is needed to see if it spreads a bigger viral load that in turn can effect how bad somebody get it. I think our goverment jumped the gun by saying it's no more harmful to avoid panic tbh.
He also highlights early data suggests the South African variant is more severe / deadly.
His line the only thing that can stop a particular variant taking hold is another more effective variant.
A few times when asked to get across his views in layman terms he said he is scared and frightened. Also that the emergence of fast moving variants could be a game changer that leads history to judge covid19 as the big one (much like the Spanish flu event.

It's natural that widespread prevalence, especially when isolated, will help to support local variants.
The greater the volume of people infected, the higher the levels of mutations that will occur. As international travel declines, these variants will compete locally, with dominant strains overtaking the others. Opening travel will get them circulating around the world.
There's a need for identification of the variants everywhere and to test vaccines efficacy against them. We're OK until any of them aren't covered by the vaccines.
I don't get my info from anywhere but credible published research and professional journals. There's just too much noise around that isn't helpful |
