Immunity to SARS-CoV-2
Jump to: Newest in thread
I was linked to an article today by my Alma mater (although I can't paste the link here unfortunately). It's written by a Professor of Biomedical Sciences and brings together recent developments in understanding about the duration of natural immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

COVID-19 immunity: how long does it last?

"Apparently people that had sars corona virus 1 back in 2003 , still have t cell immunity seventeen years later , so hopefully sars corona virus 2 will be the same . Fingers crossed ."
Yep and people who've had MERS also seem to show long lived immunity and this is also a very similar virus. Here's hoping further studies can demonstrate this conclusively ![](/icons/s/3/clover.gif) |

"I know you can't post the link but could you give us a summary.
I'd like to know how long my new superpowers will last for. "
I shall send you the link by another method because it's a long-ish article...... |

"Though now talking months here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/health-55651518
Different immune responses may have different longevity though I guess"
The article I suggested above did discuss a range of durations, with the caveat more research is needed. This is still very new in the world! The longer lived humoral memory to SARS and MERS holds out promise for the same possibility in SARS-CoV-2.
The research mentioned in the BBC article states immunity can last "at least" 5 months - that's because the study started in June 2020 (and presumably took these results in November time). They are continuing to follow the same cohort to see how long immunity seems to persist for - it could well show much longer, once a longer period of time elapses.

What is a humoral memory?"
Humoral immunity is the immunity from a B cell response. B cells can make antibodies but others become something called B memory cells. These memory cells can remain for many years (length depends on the type of infection that has generated those memory cells). Humoral memory is therefore the pool of B memory cells.
The cool thing about memory cells is that they can start changing and become specific antibody producing cells again in the future. This is how being previously exposed to an infection (either the "natural" disease or via vaccination) allows us to usually avoid the same infection twice - the subsequent times, antibodies can start being produced straightaway, whereas the first time you encounter an infection/disease, it takes many days for the humoral immune response (B cells) to start. |

Is this similar to the theory why the Far eastern countries have had low mortality, that their previous exposure to Sars 1 and mers could have given them some immunity to Sars 2. |

Due to so much "Fake News" I have more or less stopped watching any news on the Television.
What I factually know is that a large number of Carer's contracted COVID-19 back in March 2020. Some were not affected to bad, some were very poorly, a couple wish that they had died and one of them did die!
All those that survived COVID-19 are tested every month and approaching a year later they still have masses of anti-bodies and allegedly immune to contracting the disease again!
The media are a bloody disgrace these days!

I agree the news, media are a disgrace in the way they misattribute things to gain attention and it's not uncommon here too.
I don't think your statement is true either about all surviving covid patients are being tested every month. That is simply NOT true.
What is true that thousands are or have been, and it's only those who have applied for the testing kits and then it depends on how many have been given them and how many of those who received them have been doing the tests.
The only evidence so far it that there are some who shave shown to have antibodies up to 5 months later. What is missing and most importantly is no disclosure of the % of those being tested who have antibodies 5 months.
It's the information that is left out that is vital and it's a one of the cleaverist ways of spreading disinformation.
So reading between the lines and asking the important questions is vital in getting a real picture. Giving false hope can be just as damaging if not worse than none. |

I read it as all their co workers are tested every month, not that everyone who has had covid are tested every month. |

Apologies, poor wording on my part!!!!
What I should have said is, all the Carers that I know are tested regularly and remain immune to re-infection! |

What I should have said is; All the Care workers that I know are being tested on a monthly basis!
All of those people that I know who are tested on a monthly basis are still immune from re-infection.
The group of care workers that I know is fairly significant in number.

"The weekly testing of care workers is to assess for current infection with SARS-CoV-2. It's not to look for antibodies.
Antibody tests are not widely available. "
All of the carer's I know (over a dozen in several different homes) are regularly tested for antibodies!!!!!!

They are also provided with a printed report. I would share that, but it would identify them and they may not like their name published on a swinging site |

Clearly you wouldn't do that and we wouldn't suggest it. All I'm saying is it's certainly unusual. Many carers are lucky to be getting weekly infection tests, let alone antibody ones. Antibody tests involve drawing blood so more technically difficult and requires different lab tests etc. |

I think if you look at Manaus in Brazil which had no lockdown and 74% were infected....which some would think it give them herd immunity by September last year. They are suffering massive infections again from this new variant would suggest 5 months is all we can hope for as this mutated.
I hope I'm wrong though ![](/icons/s/confused.gif) |

Not a wise decision, breaching the data protection act, and a fast way to get sued, fined or imprisoned |
