Free school meals

https://metro.co.uk/2021/01/12/firm-shamed-over-inadequate-free-school-meals-parcels-defends-itself-13889782/

It seems that the company that was awarded a big contract to supply the free meals during covid has really been profiteering out of this by supplying food that can be sourced from any supermarket for 5 quid. When it is meant to be 30 quid

I saw this and is absolutely disgusting.

The example that was given was meant be 10 days of food, 30 pound would have been allocated as its 15 pounds per child per week. The contents of that looked to me like it would have been less than a fiver.

Nothing new there at all. This generally how many businesses operate and have been doing so for decades.

I'm just more surprised at how people seem so shocked about it.

Most people just ignore it until it effects themselves, till it does it just continues under the blanket of acceptable extorssion.

As it was said on the news however that the photos could not be independently verified as whether completely true or not. They were taken from Twitter and FB.

It'll be interesting once they can verify these.

It was the same with the government shielding parcels.

I'm not surprised by them because we received a government shielding parcel back in the Spring and it was very similar to the pictures that have been on social media.

There are so many similar pics of these parcels it seems very unlikely that they are fake. Have seen one parcel with my own eyes and admittedly was a little better than the one in the press but not much. And the bread given was stale so pretty much inedible.

In schools the provision for a child to get free school meals is £3 a day.

Let's hope that this is just an aberration, just one company doing it, but I suspect it wont be. There are to many other reports of a similar nature.

The fact that there are some people who will quietly accept this so as not to be labelled as somehow incapable of providing for their own children is heartbreaking.

What gets me is it would be far easier to just give the money to the parents to shop for what the kids eat. But the government will come back and say it will be spent on drink, fags ect.

But allowing these charlatans to operate like this...its got to be a better option

Sheltering the homeless in lockdown

Proper support for those self-isolating 3m self-employed

Proper pay rise for NHS staff

Never be ashamed or embarrassed to admit you get help if you need it

The important thing is that you and your kids get the food you need

That's not how conservative governments operate. I'm surprised people are surprised - particularly, after the billions that have gone to buddies of the PM and Cabinet re PPE and Track and Trace - many of which have been wasted.

There we'll be a lot of truth in it there will also be those who hate and blame the government for anything that's not going their way who will jump on this like other bandwagons.

If you see my first comment you and the other who suggested I'm defending a government that he blames everything on include the spread of the virus, will notice I said I wasn't at all surprised at hearing this because this is how businesses are expected to run in out capitalistic way of business and management. Presumably the paper and the recipient are not independent.

Considering this has come in the wake of the schools meals fiasco, where they were literally forced to do a u turn, suggests a pattern.

I get electronic vouchers sent by email. Can only use in the supermarket. There agsin I suppose some will still sell those on. With the vouchers tho ( i would get £30 as have 2) if I filled my trolley with food items and say..2 bottles of wine..and thst came to £30 they would not let me use the voucher to cover the cost of the wine..it has to be food. Quite rightly so.

The fact that there are some people who will quietly accept this so as not to be labelled as somehow incapable of providing for their own children is heartbreaking.

The school can choose what to do. If they want to check up on Vulnerable/DV kids and parents then the easiest way is to offer the food parcels as they physically have to come to school or its delivered to their home, lots of kids have to be chased and if the parents won't answer the phone or make contact after repeated attempts then concerns are raised

I get what your saying...but that doesn't address the amount that is in the parcels. Surely the school could issue a voucher on the same basis so that the kids are getting the food they want to eat, rather than defosted stale loafs that seem to be given out in these parcels?

If the parents are that irresponsible, shouldn't it be a social services issue?(if they still exist)

Providing completely insufficient meals is completed unrelated.

No it absolutely doesn't and I suppose the same can be done regarding vouchers, asking for them to be collected.

Like I said the shielding parcels were saying because they were outsourced.

You will always get people but will say something is better than nothing but actually sometimes it's just insulting and people shouldn't be expected to live on leftovers or things that other people don't want.

In schools the provision for a child to get free school meals is £3 a day.

"

Yes. The £30 agreed expenditure has been horrific, with suppliers gouging as much profit as they could, to deliver just about the least they could get away with, to those who need our full help.

It is shameful that anyone in the applicable companies even considered that they could even do this. The 'hamper' is about enough for a single meal and snack for a growing child.

The businesses involved should feel fortunate to be in active business operations, so taking public money and depriving kids of bare essentials for life is something that ought to see such businesses disqualified from public operation.

I don't know enough about it. But I'd imagine in some cases the kids would rather have the food. Than parents having the voucher? I thinks it's another one where one size perhaps doesn't fit all. And with today's tech that should fine.

What's the vouchers for? Food I thought not cigs or drink. With modern tech it wouldn't be hard to have sort all that out. The vouchers are used for getting a balanced diet with food options only. All supermarkets do it already with their own vouchers. As you say the tech is there.

Anyway no solutions of discussed here ever get implemented so it's really all polemics.

"What gets me is it would be far easier to just give the money to the parents to shop for what the kids eat. But the government will come back and say it will be spent on drink, fags ect.

But allowing these charlatans to operate like this...its got to be a better option

They have ways to block the vouchers being spent on certain things, and in fact did just that.

Less private profit in that, though.

And that seems to be the crux of the issue......making as much profit as you can.

Imagine letting kids go hungry because you want to make a profit.

That's fucking awful

My son gets free school meals but due to us living so far from the school, we have to travel some distance to get the food parcel which by the time I have put fuel in the car it is counter intuitive to go and collect it. We are managing without it currently, I just hope another family in need can use it.

It is a terrible situation to be in where children need food parcels and must be so despairing to receive an inadequate supply. People do love to blame the conservative government but the same happens in Wales where we have a labour government which controls these things. In reality the fault lies in the civil service, I deal with several departments and without fail they are all inefficient and staffed by incompetents. This is the case under any government. Until the civil service is radically changed then there is always going to be failings in delivering effective government spending.

I having difficulty understanding the logic of why the government set up sending families in need food parcels rather than send the money direct to the families. Operating a food parcel service is going to incur operating costs which will reduce the money spent on each food parcel.

I'm not sure if its something to do with the fact that several of them accused them of miss pending the vouchers which used to be issued?

Apparently the company charged £30 for each parcel which was work £5.

When we were entitled to free school meals for our children they wouldn't have gone hungry but it made the rest of our life a great deal easier. It freed up money that we could spend in other areas. At that time free meals were just available in term time. We were lucky, we had family who supported us in various ways too. The majority of people entitled to meals for their children are not work why wasters who spend the money on wide screen tv's, phones, drink and cigarettes.

What u have to remember it's not the kids fault if the parent spends the money on shit instead of food! That's why it's good they dont send vouchers if its food much better! But that food has to b fit for purpose! I was a school cook for 9 years and was told by the outside company when there were regular offenders of not paying so not even the free meal pupils if no money this week no meal! I said not on my watch if they have no pack up they will get fed! To which they said I get disapaplinery I said u go for it! No kid is going without food x

The thing is, the vouchers should not be allowed to buy booze and fags, just food. That would allow some leeway in what food you buy, rather than "here's a potato and some beans, that's what you are eating". £30 quid (if that's the figure) can buy a lot of food, certainly more than in that picture that's doing the rounds

If a child has been deemed eligible for food, the child should be fed. I don't care if the parents are saints or sinners.

Hungry child. Feed child.

It's not the child's fault that they're in this position, and the only person you punish by taking this away is the child.

The thing that gets me is how quick people are so judgemental on the parents on this fags, booze, widescreen TVs and bloody fake nails.

These kids will probably lived in poverty for around a year now...just through covid. Many maybe a lot longer.

We set a lot of store in our kids as they are our future, making sure they are feed right should be high up there...especially when we bang on about not shutting schools as it will be detrimental to the most disadvantaged kids. The government need to give the vouchers direct to the kids family.

No TVs fags booze or even false nails can be bought off a food voucher.

Also those on here who find reasons to call the parents on here to justify that kids go hungry need to give their bloidy heads a good shake.

Absolutely.

Stuff like this is a safety net for children. Including, if necessary, from idiot parents. (But not just that, and probably not even mostly that)

The child is by definition not to blame. I hate that this is a thing. They're vulnerable. They can't fend for themselves. Feed them.

It's true she might have thought "haha I'm getting free lunches for my kids, I'll spend the money on getting my nails done"

Or someone might have given them to her as a gift or since nail bars are actually closed at the moment she might have done them herself, it's possible that she's a beautician who finds herself out of work.

Yes.

How many kids is it acceptable to go hungry, versus how many instances of abuse?

"The thing is, the vouchers should not be allowed to buy booze and fags, just food. That would allow some leeway in what food you buy, rather than "here's a potato and some beans, that's what you are eating". £30 quid (if that's the figure) can buy a lot of food, certainly more than in that picture that's doing the rounds

"Nothing new there at all. This generally how many businesses operate and have been doing so for decades.

I'm just more surprised at how people seem so shocked about it.

Most people just ignore it until it effects themselves, till it does it just continues under the blanket of acceptable extorssion."

Completely agree. Always surprises me when people are shocked at a government fucking them over. Until it lands on their doorstep most don’t care. We’re all fundamentally selfish and always will be no matter how hard we try.

I’m really hoping local elections aren’t cancelled in May. Fingers crossed it’s a massacre of tories. Speak with your vote.

So fucking what? A small amount of people that qualify for these vouchers behave like dickheads (and it is a small amount)... Why should the rest suffer?!? I have heard enough people saying the same about people not following lockdown and it so unfair that they have to because others aren't, so what's the bloody difference?!?

I think vouchers are the way forward, maximum choice and dignity, allowing for culture, preference, allergies, etc.

If there are problems stopping the vouchers being used on banned items, quadruple the fines for shopkeepers.

There's a certain irony in a thread started about the abuse of a system by its providers has resulted in arguments about the abuse of a system by its users. Almost as if it's acceptable for the providers to abuse their position.

A small proportion of parents are idiots and the system isn't failsafe enough, so children should go hungry.

They have been proved not to work...I seen some government spokesman say on tv that off course they cant be expected to give £15s worth of food because they have there distribution costs.

So the best way to give the full amount via a voucher to stop big business spending a cut of the kids money to get a 100 inch widescreen tv and a stash of top notch champagne and caviar.

I guess there will always be a corner shop willing to exchange vouchers for fags and say they exchanged them for food.

It's not the same but Mr N used to work for a company that allowed him to claim for a takeaway on expenses if he was home later than 7pm. We got chatting to the owner of one of the restaurants as we were in there so often and he said if we let him know he'd provide a meal in the restaurant and include a bottle of wine and make a receipt out for a take away without the wine on it. We didn't take him up on his offer but it would have been very easy to.

Given the technology we have now, this should be a piece of piss to enforce, at least in major retailers. If the barcode triggers an age check, you need to buy that thing in a separate transaction. Any returns must be in the form of government voucher, not cash.

Give the vouchers to the schools to give out, if they think they have a family that they think won't spend the money on food, then order a food parcel from a supermarket to get sent to the house

Some schools did this in the last lock down

Having read today’s Metro newspaper there is no way that is £30 worth of food no more than £8 I would say. Some of the comments I have seen on this thread talk about a food voucher been used for cigarettes and booze if that’s the case then may instead of shops and supermarket accepting them perhaps the food bank could take on that role.

I think it was estimated at a fiver.

As has been mentioned,it cant be rocket science to devise a system where vouchers are just used for food.

I think the food banks are already struggling.
