I heard on the BBC news yesterday that 40% of people that are currently in hospital with covid in the UK are between the age of 18 and 65 and a further 25% under 70.

So is it now time for younger people to start excepting that they are more risk of serious illness from covid than they first thought?

To be honest I'm not sure because I see so many comments along the lines of I should live my life because I'm fit young and healthy but actually it appears that no body really knows their risk of getting seriously unwell.

I don’t doubt the figures however the the huge age disparity between 18 - 65 and then 66 - 70 would suggest that the nearer you are to 65 your more likely to end up in hospital than if nearer to 18.

It’s obviously a scare tactic to worry people however perhaps a better breakdown of the age ranges would be more helpful.

Under 20

20 - 29

30 -39

So in units of 10 years and perhaps after 60 in units of 5 years.

Well that is the same with pretty much every illness but my point was that maybe younger people are not as immune to this as they first thought.

I really don't see the point anymore quoting these ridiculous statistics it's stuff like this that has lent to complacency.

It's a danger to all ,end of!

I agree with the lovely bottom above. There’s also still little known about so called long COVID.

Younger people are more likely to survive it but I know a few that are suffering with the after effects months later. Struggling to look after children due to tiredness, not able to taste / smell properly, breathing problems, fevers. These are people in their 30s who had no underlying conditions.

men around 40 are increasingly taking up hospital space as well apparently.

All the above is pretty much valid. Of course the older you are the more likely you are to end up in hospital with covid. But for context. At the end of November the average age of covid patient was nearly 62 at the end of december it was just over 58. That tells you that the proportion of younger covid patients is definitely increasing.

Scare tactic?

If it makes people do the right thing I'm a big fan of scare tactics.

Taking the virus threads as a snapshot suggests a lot of people aren't scared enough about the consequences of catching or passing on C19.

Death figures are only part of the story. Who wants to be very ill in hospital for a long time or be permanently disabled. The figures speak for themselves average age of someone being hospitalised from covid is coming down all the time. If anyone thinks they are immune to the effects of covid they just plain deluded.

All ages are a potential risk from being a carrier to being infected by the virus so keeping things like any schools or colleges is like feeding the virus to spread further it needs to be contained to be controlled which is common sense where the government hasn't took the matter seriously yes all is important but if everyone is a year behind or longer it's how it is but it puts the public safety as a priority but has shown that they don't care enough we just turn the wheels to provide for the government for the economy we don't have any other value

Social media has absolutely scuppered all public messaging. People don’t take this seriously because they aren’t exposed to the reality of the situation and people are fuelled by misinformation online.

People love to take facts and data out of context to manipulate it to their viewpoint.

Covid is serious, it can and will affect anyone. Nobody knows their own probability of getting seriously ill or dying from it, so why do people want to gamble with their lives or of those they care about.

The other thing people fail to neglect is that, if everyone in hospital are solely covid patients then what of people suffering from other illnesses or emergencies when there’s nobody to treat them. Why can’t people just stay in for a bit longer and then be free to do what they want when we get through this?

The longer people complain and not follow the rules the worse it gets and drags out their frustrations longer!

Is anyone able to make their own opinion rather than following information via the internet or information via television just numbers of deaths around the globe should be taken as serious information no body knows age groups around the globe we only get figures in UK England but these are never accurate as some people have illnesses and just like a perfectly fit human being is able to catch flu can still catch illnesses shows if you place yourself in a environment around the virus you'll be infected whether you survive is anyone's guess

"I don’t doubt the figures however the the huge age disparity between 18 - 65 and then 66 - 70 would suggest that the nearer you are to 65 your more likely to end up in hospital than if nearer to 18.

I agree with the disparity in age range not being helpful in assessing whether or not younger people are more likely to be hospitalised than at first thought. I don't think it's a deliberate scare tactic by the BBC.

It was a nurse in London who made statements about children filling wards in the hospital she worked at. This was immediately refuted by the paediatric doctors who also work in the same hospital. There was a lengthy Twitter exchange about it. A very unfortunate situation, because it doesn't help the cause at all.

https://metro.co.uk/2021/01/03/consultant-slams-garbage-claims-that-covid-wards-are-full-of-children-13839743/

The Evelina Children's Hospital has also put out a statement on 2nd Jan, stating:

"We know that you may be worried about COVID-19 (also known as coronavirus), and the potential impact on children and young people. Evelina London Medical Director, Sara Hanna, is reassuring families about the situation in our hospital:

“Our large children's hospital located in South East London covering the south east region, is not seeing large numbers of children or young people in our hospital with COVID-19. We want to reassure families that may have seen media reporting which implied this was the case.

“We are currently seeing very few children with COVID-19 infection in our hospital, and so far this winter appears to be one of the quietest for any form of respiratory illness in children. These levels are currently lower than our experience of previous winters.

“All patients with known or suspected COVID-19 are being treated as per Public Health England instructions on isolation and infection prevention and control. Our experienced teams are well prepared for this.

“Because we have fewer children and young people in our hospital at the moment, we have been able to offer some of our staff and space to support adult services at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

“We are still here for you, and it is safe to visit us if you need urgent care at our Emergency Department, or if you have been invited for an appointment or procedure. "I heard on the BBC news yesterday that 40% of people that are currently in hospital with covid in the UK are between the age of 18 and 65 and a further 25% under 70.

So is it now time for younger people to start excepting that they are more risk of serious illness from covid than they first thought?

The mortality figures tell a totally different story, ONS mortality rates for week ending 1 Jan 2021:- 3144 deaths with a MENTION of covid19 on death certificate of those 2967 were over 60 which equates to 94% being over 60, 2367 were over 75 which equates to 75%. ( deaths are England and Wales)so maybe the BBC are yet again spewing out fear porn,

If it was only about deaths eh

What about these youngsters who were previously fit and well...but then develope chronic illnesses.

I dont think warning people is scare tactics..

where is the proof that any youngsters are developing chronic illness ? BBC is hardly a credible source of scientific information

Have a google there is tonnes of evidence from lots of reputatable sources. My cousin in his 30s will never work again through covid. 6 weeks in hospital 3 weeks on a ventialator. Took him another month before he could walk when he came out of hospital His kidneys are too badly damaged to recover properly and his lungs and heart are also damaged. "

To add to your anecdotal evidence, large numbers of kings students are testing positive now , there’s about 800 that shared 7 blocks in kings residences up to end Dec and a group chat with them all on sharing results abs experiences . No one testing positive in that chat is reporting more than a cough loss of smell etc. Most were surprised they tested positive as had no symptoms. Similar stories at Manchester Met.

"No risk if young and healthy, in most cases zero symptoms. Look at proper sources like ONS, not some nutter on YouTube who thinks the world is flat"

I wouldn't say no risk but it does seem the risk is relatively low.

"But are they being treated for covid?

Does anyone know the figures on the number of people in hospital who have covid, but aren’t necessarily being treated for covid?

The travelling tabby covid tracker has this and lots of other covid stats. There are around 35000 people being treated for covid and 3300 covid patients on ventialators/ ICU."

I asked if anyone knew the figures for those who are in hospital WITH covid but AREN’T being treated for covid.

The stats you showed me are for those who are being treated for covid.

So yes, 40% of people in hospital with covid could be 18 - 65, but are they actually being treated FOR covid?

Eg a 24yo in hospital with covid but is only being treated for a burn injury.

"I don’t doubt the figures however the the huge age disparity between 18 - 65 and then 66 - 70 would suggest that the nearer you are to 65 your more likely to end up in hospital than if nearer to 18.

It’s obviously a scare tactic to worry people however perhaps a better breakdown of the age ranges would be more helpful.

Under 20

20 - 29

30 -39

So in units of 10 years and perhaps after 60 in units of 5 years.

I really don't see the point anymore quoting these ridiculous statistics it's stuff like this that has lent to complacency.

It's a danger to all ,end of!

Take note and follow guidelines.

Not difficult is it."

Complacency is the problem but the government hasn’t helped by putting out mixed and confusing messages like initially saying it didn’t effect younger people.

We all need to pull together and until we do we won’t beat this virus

Mate. You don't want proof, you don't want evidence except for you to try and dispute and fuel your conspiracy thinking that it's all a made up hoax.

Look around you and engage you ability to see the evidence that's in your face and not focus so much on trying to argue against only to reassure yourself if your thinking. Green arrow is fab friend.

"Children seem still to not be affected badly. Most are getting it mildly at most."

I see a bigger concern in that they could be one of the more prominent age group to spread it, by their nature of interaction, their need for intimate care, lower awareness of how they can spread it.

So because they or anyone for that matter who doesn't suffer severe conditions that need hospitalisation or NHS resources there is a bigger issue if we don't target that.

"No risk if young and healthy, in most cases zero symptoms. Look at proper sources like ONS, not some nutter on YouTube who thinks the world is flat"

I will look at the real life examples in my own life.

I had covid over Christmas and I'm Considered to be in the high risk group and was told I'd likely get very ill, iv had worse colds and I live with a shielder who was asymptomatic.

By best friend who took me to a medical appointment is 40 and normally fit and healthy ended up in hospital very seriously ill, her extremely fit husband was also very unwell and totally wiped out for 10 day and likewise for their 22 year daughter.

So the reality is as I have said nobody knows their risk. All thisit's not true you read something on YouTube is absolute rubbish.

A Docotor on the BBC news from one of the big London hospitals said yesterday that since the new variant they have now needed dedicated covid wards set up just for children. They also have covid wards for people aged 18 to 40 whom have have no known co morbidities.

KJI'd question that as all the evidence I've read has suggested that while they may have wards ready. Children seem still to not be affected badly. Most are getting it mildly at most.

You're questioning a Doctor? are you..as the reports I've read are from doctors too

I didnt see the mentioned tv report but would think if on a recorded interview a doctor wouldnt make such a statement if it was untrue.

It is important to still get the care your child needs during this time. We have extra measures in place to make sure you and our staff are safe when you come in.”

"

Thank you for that post

The original news report made out that the children's covid ward was full to the brim and the new variant was to blame.

Even though the risk may be low or zero in younger people they can still pass it to those who’s risk is higher and potentially life threatening.

Every day is a Russian Roulette day in everyone’s life. You have no idea if you will be the one who lives or dies! NOT WORTH THE RISK in any age group!

I did a shift on ITU last week, none of the patients with covid were over the age of 60.

I also did a shift on a regular covid ward, 3 patients died during my shift (7am until 2pm) again, none of them over 60 years old.

I held a 51 year old man's hand as he was fighting to breath and his sats dropped below 50. His daughter was 19.

I've only just started back working at the hospital, and I was shocked at how young the patients are.

I was also looking after a lovely old lady, she was independent and lived on her own, she had shielded since it started so hadn't seen her family, until they decided it would be nice to nip over on Xmas day. Shes now in hospital with covid and other complications.

It isn't just the 99 year old men and women who, I mean this in the nicest possible way, without covid they wouldn't have many months left to live anyway.

Its the younger people now and its all utterly heartbreaking.

"Social media has absolutely scuppered all public messaging.

The longer people complain and not follow the rules the worse it gets and drags out their frustrations longer!"

Why do some people have to vindicate themselves? Covid 19 Kills all ages races and creeds.

If you want to die just ignore experts and listen to Fab lawyers who know everything doesn't kill me I'm 33 white and privileged basicly can do what I want. "

....but it might kill you, or you can end up in hospital taking up a bed which an older, less privileged person could have had, and they die.

Just remember its the young often doing the frontline jobs!! Nurses care staff, supermarkets.

They may indeed be doing everything they can and taking it seriously!! Yet their job increases the risk.

Someone elderly and shielding is more likely at less exposure risk.

The real risk to elderly I guess is care homes. Care home outbreaks are not good

Most younger people dont seem to be able to read!

I think you will find that the illiteracy rates in people under 65 are actually higher than those in the older population when education wasn't as widely available.

Just seen a report on the news about hospital staff.

They are calling for better PPE on the wards as they only have the blue surgical face masks...whilst icu have FFP3 masks. The infection rate is double amongst ward staff who check most of covid patients in, compared to icu staff.

It wouldn’t be helpful at all. The figures are there if you look. The more under 40 who realise their probably of serious illness from Covid is very very small, the less they will comply and the more danger it creates for both higher risk groups and the NHS as a whole.

So yes there is an element of scare but sadly a necessary one.

Maybe these young people are carers (we never get classed as medical staff we are the cannon fodder).

Or they work in super markets.

Also maybe they have to use public transport to get to work (I do).

Well it did sound that way to me.

Yes everyone is at risk, some more than others.

I'm one of the lucky ones, my immune system is pretty solid. The worst I've ever been was nor virus. And I lost half a stone in a week!! That was worse than both times I've had covid for me.

Also please remember there is an admission to hospital threshold. For someone elderly with lots of health complications at present that threshold is high (wrong but hospitals are at breaking point). Someone young and relatively fit and healthy their threshold will be much lower.

And as I say older people are more likely to be shielding.

Yes we are all at some level of risk. Even though we are both essential workers I refuse to send my son to school. Hes safer in our childcare bubble than at school I feel.

Maybe these young people are carers (we never get classed as medical staff we are the cannon fodder).

Or they work in super markets.

Also maybe they have to use public transport to get to work (I do).

Please don't just assume because we are young we arent listening. Im 32 I've had covid twice both times due to my job!!

At no point have I or anybody on this thread said people are getting it by being reckless.

I am saying that younger people are not as immune as they think they are.

A lot of older people are carers too.

Hes safer in our childcare bubble than at school I feel."

If you would like to show me where anybody has said that young people are being reckless on this thread I would appreciate it.

I was simply saying young people are not as immune to this as they 1st thought that is not the same as being reckless!

"Just remember its the young often doing the frontline jobs!! Nurses care staff, supermarkets.

They may indeed be doing everything they can and taking it seriously!! Yet their job increases the risk.

Someone elderly and shielding is more likely at less exposure risk.

To me that was how it sounded was all. And people seem to be saying it a lot so I assumed that's what you meant.

Most young people I know definitely realise we are not immune to this.

Although I stand by my point young people are at risk because of their jobs mostly.

Really . The irony is most gullible people get their information from social media, material provided either for free or paid for but unknown and dubious sources. The BBC has its own internal bias but if you think it’s under the thumb of the British government you are rather out of touch with reality!

Yes, it was utterly inexcusable but then again, so many other famous faces from multitudes of TV, radio channels or newspapers etc have equally been implicated. I'd say it was an era thing rather than specific to the BBC.

I was referring to someone questioning the BBC corruption (or lack of it in their view) their is no doubt that the Saville thing was an odius episode from decades ago. But corruption (thankfully not in the Saville kind) stoll is prevelant within the BBC

There's been a few videos on the BBC taken inside ICU units. And of course, people underneath complaining about the BBC scaremongering or asking why a reporter is allowed inside etc. The same people saying last week that they don't believe it because if it was real, surely it'd be on the news etc. Unfortunately, I don't think they can win

There is no doubt the BBC have good news programmes and documentaries. Their biggest problem is their mainstream news offerings where they fsil to effectively challenge those political parties in power

I see these were allowed to one rebuff the empty hospitals videos going around, what the staff are having to deal with, how they are coping or not to make a few reasons and that is why they have been allowed in. Why is it not normally on the news, one the virus itself, respect for the staff and of course more importantly the patients, if people can’t understand that there really is no getting through their hard head

You’ll always have those that don’t believe until it’s their family in that unit.

I know this hospital and the fact that 15 of its 19 floors are purely covid was a shock.

Got to agree Andrew Marr is shite. But so is Sophie Ridge on sky...and peston on itv. The best is channel 4s and dare I say (forgot her name) the blonde one one bbc 2 newsnight.

Brian Waldron was one of the best though
