We see people are still travelling miles away from home to go walking in areas like the Lake District, Peak District, and local beauty areas near us are still really busy with people from out of the area.
Are police even doing checks on people travelling?
Has anyone actually even been stopped by police and questioned?
We haven't heard of anyone being stopped anywhere. |

I think they have a jurisdiction issue between Durham, N.Yorks and Cumbria, but it’s happening at the Scottish boarder now and in North Tyneside prior to lockdown...
Do you think they need to make more of an effort ? |

I think the police are in a very difficult situation here, recourses and manpower cut over the years,
Having to decide where to deploy staff must be difficult.
But if they where granted the ability to hand out on the spot fines for rule breaker's I'm sure it would make their jobs easier.
There's so many grey area's and ways around the lockdown guidance that unless they catch people actually arriving at a tourist spot then stopping someone in the street randomly it's going to be difficult to prove where they were intending to go. |

Most key workers have been given a letter to travel with further information for the police to contact if required. They probably don’t feel the need to take it any further... people are under enough pressure as it is, but I do think some people are taking advantage of the situation |

"I have not been stopped but know others who have. One friend got asked where she was going and when she said Asda she was told that this was not allowed as not the closest supermarket to her home."

It's totally unfeasible to expect a large village of four thousand plus to only shop at two small local shops, yes we have got two bakers and a butcher's which we use but to expect literally hundreds of people each day in either of what are small shops is madness..

I can only assume in the case of Swansea it was just pure luck as there are definitely police stopping people .They are even dishing out fines to parents that are leaving there teenagers hang around in groups.

Some me forces were certainly doing that in the first spring lockdown, esp in tourist areas like Cunbria and Devon. |

Getting stricter in Metropolitan police area (announced yesterday) be prepared to be stopped, questioned on where you live, why you are out, why no mask and alike. Before lockdown we already had two no drive / occupying cars orders to stop people coming to the area or congregating in their cars. |

I don't drive but I have a neighbor that has always got his mates round...doesn't care nor do they. Police have a 'Breach of covid rules' form online to fill in for any one that does want to report any one. |

They are. Happened to a family who drove from Peterborough to Norfolk, police questioned them when they stopped and then told them to get back in and drive home. |

I think they should have rolling motorway roadblocks. Spot checks on everyone. |

We were stopped coming back from London.
The police were lovely and helpful and when we explained the situation they said they would log it so we shouldn't have to explain in detail again but may still get stopped. |

We have one small village shop with a post office in it. No way could this serve the whole community constantly as much as they do try their best to. |

They do. One is called the M6. The other is called the M25. |

Herne Bay and Whitstable car parks are full of DFL’s and other travellers yet the police do nothing.
All they need do is check the reg number of the car and if its considered to have travelled a significant way send them a fine in the post.
Also why is there not a police officer at train stations asking everyone why they are getting off at the stop, particularly at the weekends. |

We know there has been police at York train station asking people where they are travelling, again we suspect it's down to manpower though that they physically can't do it all. |

i don't think a rolling block would be feasible, not for this in any case, but I guess they (highways patrols) and/or local police be on the junction slipways. It's a case of jurisdiction under the Highways Act. Been a long time since I read that exciting bit of literature.
I know in Kent both HA and local police shared jurisdiction, but an application for every junction is required. Takes about 6 months typically |

They've got the manpower.... They sit pointing speed cameras at people while hidden behind a Bush on a flyover. Just redeploy them for a week. Get the videos out on YouTube and fb etc and it will help. If they were enforcing it we would hear about it. |

They've got the manpower.... They sit pointing speed cameras at people while hidden behind a Bush on a flyover. Just redeploy them for a week. Get the videos out on YouTube and fb etc and it will help. If they were enforcing it we would hear about it. "
The speed camera was out the other day on a 70 mph road in our area. It was heavy snow, no one was doing above 30mph. They won't of made any pennies that day  |

That doesn't surprise us. A lot will just ignore the fines."
That’s not to say they’re not shelling out the fines mind. An ex colleague of mine works York city centre and gave out 15 covid tickets in a single covid patrol, so it’s not for lack of trying. |

Do you think British Transport Police have the resources to put an officer at every single station in the country to do that?
There is an unreasonable expectation that the police will be able to fully enforce the restrictions. As one other poster said they don’t have the resources. With austerity police forces have not only had to dispose of large swathes of “police estate” ie close down and sell off police stations, but also restrict recruitment and make members of staff redundant due to their budget cuts. For too many years now they are being expected to do more with less - the government pledge to recruit 20k new officers sounds good - but if you split that across all the different forces, and then different areas within each force, you could end up with just 3 or 4 new officers in each of those local areas. Bear in mind during that time officers and staff will retire, resign etc, then it MIGHT just fill the gaps made by natural wastage. Also the last several years of having to do less with more, and what they have to deal with, has led to unprecedented numbers of officers and staff in all 3 emergency services going sick with mental health problems. There just aren’t enough to enforce everything, and so all of the emergency services have to prioritise all the time - for the police that’s an IMMEDIATE threat to life or property, for the ambulance service it’s who has need of them most.
Motorways have in the main not been patrolled by police for over 20 years - Home Office Traffic Officers ( or as Jeremy Clarkson calls them traffic wombles) deal with all but the most serious incidents on the motorway but have no powers to stop or enforce things like speeding.
What’s really needed is for people to take responsibility for their own actions. Or for “normal” people to start calling people out for being selfish dickheads. |

Yes. The welsh police are stopping anyone entering Wales, a few work colleagues I know have been stopped and asked the purpose of their journey. |

I would drive more than that to get to the shops. Once I'm there, it's actually better if I took exercise in the wide open spaces around there, as it's most unlikely I'll be within 100m of anyone else. Likewise, if I'm traveling around for work, I'll do shopping at a shop I'm passing on the way back. (I should add I only shop anywhere if the places aren't busy) |

The police and local authority resources were cut by £billions. Currently the police face staff absences due to infections and need for isolation, so they're unfortunately stretched. There's no resource for blanket checks of everyone but those who are suspiciously unusual, will get more attention.
I had a cop car follow me home 1 early evening in the 1st lockdown. They didn't speak but perhaps were checking where I was driving to. It would have been a good way to catch our people going to other's homes, which people on here state their neighbours have been doing.
Wales has been in lockdown longer than England and their police seem to have been very active, I've heard of a number of people fined for being too far from their homes. England has only just started. I was pleased that the roads were much quieter today.
Evening and night time travellers are going to stick out now, with closed restaurants, pubs, cinemas etc, leaving just a few shoppers, those travelling from work, or people out for inappropriate reasons. |

my brain hurts with this one
why would you need to drive 5 miles from a densely populated area to wide open area before you can find a shop?
and if thats not the case why would it be safer to exercise near the shop than your home? |

We nearest local high street is 5 miles away. We live in the middle of nowhere |

It all depends where you live... T3/T4/lockdown our households life has been within the two square miles we live. The only exception is my lad who travels four stops on the train (10 minutes) to his father as part of the child arrangements. |

I was stopped by the police once. Sting had read the map wrong and they were two hours late for a sound check. I told them it was left, next right, straight through the lights and left. Dunno if they ever got there however. |

We nearest local high street is 5 miles away. We live in the middle of nowhere"
it wasn’t a dig at people that do need to travel, just pointing out the post only seemed to have solutions for people they didnt want coming to the countryside, nothing suggested for those travelling from
the reality is not everything is black and white (like don’t travel 5 miles doesn’t even allow you a food shop so there is a legitimate reason to bend that rule) ... i think if people worked more to the principal of the rules which is stay away from other people as much as possible rather than the letter of the rule (can do x y and z) it would also cut down on people out wandering garden centres and click and collect shopping on the high street etc etc because a technicality allows them |

Yes. The welsh police are stopping anyone entering Wales, a few work colleagues I know have been stopped and asked the purpose of their journey. "
Really ? Seriously ? My chap travels from wales into England 5 days a week inc on the weekend at times ranging from 0200 back to 0200 for work since last March and he’s never even seen a copper let alone be stopped by one |

They don't have to as travelling to give care and visit your support bubble is one of the exemptions.
It is likely that people might start getting challenged by the police but it is one of the exemptions so if it is explained in won't be a problem. |

"The police and local authority resources were cut by £billions. Currently the police face staff absences due to infections and need for isolation, so they're unfortunately stretched. There's no resource for blanket checks of everyone but those who are suspiciously unusual, will get more attention.
I had a cop car follow me home 1 early evening in the 1st lockdown. They didn't speak but perhaps were checking where I was driving to. It would have been a good way to catch our people going to other's homes, which people on here state their neighbours have been doing.
Wales has been in lockdown longer than England and their police seem to have been very active, I've heard of a number of people fined for being too far from their homes. England has only just started. I was pleased that the roads were much quieter today.
Evening and night time travellers are going to stick out now, with closed restaurants, pubs, cinemas etc, leaving just a few shoppers, those travelling from work, or people out for inappropriate reasons. "

I travel a lot for work and not once have I been stopped or seen any sort of anpr check point. Its an empty gov threat I think because the police just dont have the man power to enforce it.
However, the polic have probably loved the lack of pissed up bar fights at 2am on a fri/sat night. Resources better used elsewhere |

I see there’s been a lot of noise about the SNP ‘closing the borders’ between England and Scotland. Absolute twaddle. My partner works in Scotland a lot and hasn’t seen a single cop, even when he has to go up towards Aberdeen. Not once has he been stopped. I think it purely just comes down to lack of staff, and probably an unwritten, unofficial agreement with the media to try and scare people off from travelling with tall tales of border checks.  |

They have introduced laws that they can not possibly police, so they are doing the next best thing scaring people into complying.
What the idiots haven't taken into account is the mental health ramifications of their policy.
A friend of mine has a daughter who is home from uni. She is depressed and very anxious. My friend spent a week trying to get her an appointment with a mental health nurse at her GPs after a week of frustration she was told she could have an appointment in about 3 months time.
I was furious and through my contacts got her a private appointment with a mental health councilor,when I found my friend was getting a loan to pay for it I stepped 8n again and am paying for the sessions.
If I can save just one young live it will be worth it |

My daughter also at uni and struggling on many levels as are all of her friends. They are doing their best to ignore the media shite and support eachother but it's a powder keg situation unfortunately with no easy answer. Uni students have been treated very shabbily from the start (soft target)
Even yesterday's q and a from Boris indicated there's been no thinking gone into it. I hope they all manage to stumble through this to the other side. |

If you need to travel you should stay local – meaning avoiding travelling outside of your village, town or the part of a city where you live – and look to reduce the number of journeys you make overall”

Most key workers have been given a letter to travel with further information for the police to contact if required. They probably don’t feel the need to take it any further... people are under enough pressure as it is, but I do think some people are taking advantage of the situation "

We should have closed our borders in March when we went into lockdown, January 2021 and they are just thinking of introducing a 72 hour pre arrival PCR test certificate for arrivals....the mind boggles...,,but truck drivers from Europe are exempt  |

Also why is there not a police officer at train stations asking everyone why they are getting off at the stop, particularly at the weekends.
Do you think British Transport Police have the resources to put an officer at every single station in the country to do that?
There is an unreasonable expectation that the police will be able to fully enforce the restrictions. As one other poster said they don’t have the resources. With austerity police forces have not only had to dispose of large swathes of “police estate” ie close down and sell off police stations, but also restrict recruitment and make members of staff redundant due to their budget cuts. For too many years now they are being expected to do more with less - the government pledge to recruit 20k new officers sounds good - but if you split that across all the different forces, and then different areas within each force, you could end up with just 3 or 4 new officers in each of those local areas. Bear in mind during that time officers and staff will retire, resign etc, then it MIGHT just fill the gaps made by natural wastage. Also the last several years of having to do less with more, and what they have to deal with, has led to unprecedented numbers of officers and staff in all 3 emergency services going sick with mental health problems. There just aren’t enough to enforce everything, and so all of the emergency services have to prioritise all the time - for the police that’s an IMMEDIATE threat to life or property, for the ambulance service it’s who has need of them most.
Motorways have in the main not been patrolled by police for over 20 years - Home Office Traffic Officers ( or as Jeremy Clarkson calls them traffic wombles) deal with all but the most serious incidents on the motorway but have no powers to stop or enforce things like speeding.
What’s really needed is for people to take responsibility for their own actions. Or for “normal” people to start calling people out for being selfish dickheads.

That doesn't surprise us. A lot will just ignore the fines.
That’s not to say they’re not shelling out the fines mind. An ex colleague of mine works York city centre and gave out 15 covid tickets in a single covid patrol, so it’s not for lack of trying. "
The coppers in York where checking peoples ID in the Ivy before lockdown when in Tier 2.....the Steak Tartare is good but not worth a £200 fine

Refusing to give details/verify identity will likely get you arrested rather than fined.
Becoming abusive will get you a fine (potentially) but it won't be Covid related, it'll be public order related. Either way, it's deserved. |

That beach incident was set up by anti knock down protesters. It was a woman trying to test the law. Again you are misquoting what he said because he said the chances are the reason people were given fines is not because of the initial actions but because of their response or actions after being approached.

Yes he did say that but he did not say that people who have been fined shouldn't have been. |

The that's why the woman in Brighton got arrested because she refused to give her details and then people came out of nowhere and started filming so the say it looked like it had been set up. |

They are definitely stopping people in Wales. They turned away over a hundred cars on Moel Famau in North Wales at the weekend.
They can’t be everywhere, all the time. In a place like Wales, which is a popular place to visit, they are targeting hotspots. Even then, it’s obviously way less than all the (many) hotspots.

I’m sorry, but that’s one person - that really doesn’t prove the police are stopping people  .
I had a conversation with a policeman who was at a popular beauty spot only yesterday (It’s walking distance!). |

I think since it has been announced today in government update what is and what isn't classified as a person or persons limited access for going out for fresh air and exercises the police now have more power to act on remember the police can only act if the rules have been placed so this would be additional information even though loads haven't been sensible to think about others or themselves should be not only fined but public humiliation in the news papers all this would also effect further employment also fed back if they are an employee showing they don't have any duty of care which could also affect other staff who might be employed |
