I want to describe something to those that are still meeting. Both my parents have been in icu in the last 10 years and both have nearly passed. Both are alive but I want to describe what it is like. Both were in their 50s - non covid

Both my parents were on a ventilator with pipes down both their throats with plastic masks on faces. There was the constant hum of the machines, beeping all the time (probably evry 30 secs) but feels like all the time. The numerous drips and medication being pumped in to them.

The blood being pumped in as well as being pumped out because there body is failing. The feeling that you may not see this person tomorrow to apologise for everything that you messed up with. Only being able to see them for a couple of hours / or less than an hour or at all if you haven’t been told they have gone for a scan. That feeling when you go to see them and they are not their abs the dread that they may have pAssed but actually just gone to surgery. That conversation with the doctor when they tell you that they are doing all they can and we have to wait and see. The delirium when they are coming around due to the drugs they are on. Normal people become very offensive

I really really wish I could show people what icu / hdu is like because words really really don’t do it justice. It is the most horrific feeling that will stay with me. Also both parents have struggled to compute the difference between what actually happened and what they were dreaming.

What I am trying to say we are under lockdown and I don’t want anyone here’s kids to have to go through what I went through. Please this virus real!!!!

ICU is a scary place that is on a comparison as being in a war zone and some do actually suffer PTSD after it.

I know as I've been there...but not to belittle your post in any way. Thankfully we have developed therapeutic treatments that will prevent a good % not having to go there with the use of CPAP on the wards it's a little better outcome now. But having said that it's best to do your best to avoid catching it in the first place

You really don't want anyone to be in hospital at all at the moment for covid or anything else. No visitors allowed, you can't take stuff in or get anything sent in, staff are rushed off their feet, covid test three times a week, mask on all the time except for eating and sleeping. It's a lonely and frightening place to be.
