Country can go to tier 5, 6 or 200 .. but its pie in the sky without enforcement.

Let's be honest, plod won't turn up if you get bungled or robbed, so why bother putting in GUIDELINES when you can't enforce it?

He should introduce the French system where you need to show a form detailing your reason for being outside your house. Either on paper or on your phone. The form shows who you are, where you live, when you left home and you tick a box against the allowed activity you are doing. No valid form, instant fine. Out for too, long instant fine. Too far from home, instant fine. Fines double each time.

As a key worker, I have a form documenting my need to travel to and from work x

Our neighbours have broken them every day since March.

Kinda ashamed to admit this but we have been logging movements, writing down vrns of vehicle’s guests arrivie/leave in, what time they arrive/leave, descriptions of guests and have a tally for each person on how many times that week they have visited....

Everything has been reported but nothing, absolutely nothing has happened to them. We don’t particularly like this neighbour for other reasons but they clearly doesn’t give a toss about the virus. Just last week we heard them constantly coughing and guess what? They was still going out, having family/friends round constantly...

I wish police, councils would do their jobs and fine them

I know of someone who has been going to wales every weekend , since lockdown even when Wales closed there borders , to visit hes girlfriend, they swapped cars so he uses her Welsh registration car to get in and out of wales , not once been stopped, joke

Absolutely agree that it’s time to get squaddies patrolling to back up the Police Farce.

Mostly on tubes and trains where I see morons swigging out of beer cans burping coughing and think it’s a big joke.

Most morons welcome confrontation with the police as they are now a laughing stock but they’ll find the green machine a very different entity!

The people breaking the rules stick out, but most people do do what is asked of them. The rules are not restrictive enough, people will continue to do the things that they are allowed to do. If the want people to stay at home they need to close the shops, schools, gyms. Make food shopping "1 person only", and tell the masses they must only go out for 1 hr a day for exercise.

So every time I get a call to give a quote or to take on much needed work out of the blue because I’m self employed trying to keep a roof over my families head and food on their plates...I have to show documentation when sometimes there is no time?

How much notice will I have to have to go and work?

Nobody is gonna pay my bills for me.

All businesses and schools should close for 6-12 months, blanket shutdown. No travel more than 3km from home and roadblocks set up at all main junctions.

All those not vaccinated should not be able to attend public places without wearing an identifyable orange badge so we will know who to avoid and point them out to authorities.

Those failing to do so will be arrested and sent to correction units and forcefully vaccinated.

All those protesting about so called hard won freedoms and freedom of speech should be shunned and made to comply and do exactly what Matt Hancock says as he has been proved right from day one.

I'm a key worker, elec distribution, and have to carry a company letter with me stating such, I travel the uk, since the start of covid I've not once been asked to show it or even stopped..

I hope you're being sarcastic but just in case you aren't, Do you understand what 6 months plus of all businesses and schools being shut down would do to this country? That is literally the future of the country losing out on actual education. You think we have experienced austerity and cuts up till now, imagine what it would be like with all small businesses having folded even though the government tried their best to help, the unemployment rate would be sky high for years because of how many businesses, little and large, would fold. Suicide rates would eclipse the deaths from this virus. Poverty and poverty related deaths would double that at least. Not to mention, there's no social distancing in prisons so the spread of the virus would just find a new core.

As for the army on the streets, really does anyone think that is the answer, martial law ?

The army have no legal powers and no training in enforcement in a civilian environment (with the possible exception of the RMP who patrol the dock cities and places like Aldershot).

The government cant get the legislation to impose restriction written correctly what chance have they of writing a bill to give the army civilian police powers.

Towns and cities are already in a curfew night clubs have been closed very long time who will be struggling very much which leaves the pub change in similar position but we're allowed to open with limited access to people adding more people like the army just creates further at risk when you don't know which location have come from its about isolating to contain to control the virus which isn't what the government has been doing limited access what is necessary to what isn't if restaurants were closed people weren't going to go hungry but had a pick up and go or delivery but this virus has shown how clueless society is just by watching those who walk around like a headless chicken through town centre streets not making a effort to avoid another person

I work in the garage workshop trade, today roads are still packed with non key workers, it’s like we are in tier 1 certainly not a lockdown..

Contrary to what some think it's working too.

It was funny listening to some responses to this the other day when I said this was what France has been doing in response to comments on here about it doesn't work here.

The thing is we've become so accustomed to the freedom we have here compared to even some Way countries that it goes against our thinking to enforce restrictions even though most of us believe them to be right.

I'd say more and more people are calling for them, many saying they should have been done much earlier, but many of these same people were against the suggestion at the time.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The armed forces aren’t the answer to enforcement here. Without a change in the law, they have no more powers than you or I to arrest someone, use force, etc. And our armed forces aren’t exactly numerous these days.

I’d agree with the comment on traffic on the roads today though, not much change to normal. Hopefully it’s just people going to their workplaces and back for the last time to get remote working equipment etc ... but I’m doubtful!

You know they are using ANPR inappropriately then? There were stories like this on the first lockdown. People saying 2 cars stopped and the people were arrested for being out. The truth was that there were stopped because one had no insurance, mot etc and went to assault an officer and the other one had previously jumped bail.

Did you ask the officers why they stopped the people or are you assuming they were out of the area. There's no provision for that and it's a gross waste of public resources.

The army, including all volunteers and reservists totals 187000 soldiers. It wouldn’t make much difference considering the size of the country they’d have to patrol 24/7. The problem with any lockdown rules is that they are completely unenforceable due to the size of the population and size of the country, you’d need a soldier/policeman on every street at all times for it to be a deterrent to people that break the rules, which is impossible

Covid really has highlighted the inequality in this country. Restrictions are a lot easier when you have a job where you can work from your comfortable house receiving your full salary without paying for commuting, whilst getting your groceries delivered from Waitrose or Sainsbury’s .

If you’re on a zero hours contract, don’t qualify for statutory sick pay and have no savings left doing the right thing is a lot bigger challenge.

Only the government can do anything about that though, not the morally outraged of fab.

Well half of them got it back when they lost the war and the allies installed a new government. The other half got it back 45 years later when David Hasslehoff tore down the Berlin Wall. Not sure they loved the time in between though.

The police should be chasing up covidiots breaking rules and the army should be out helping them.

Doubt all the protesters in London would take on a unit of squaddies like they did the police.

My example the young lady in Hyde park over the weekend launching items at the police then her friends screaming she was a child the police were man handling her. She is in fact 18 and was resisting arrest for said items and abuse she created.

Or the man in the news this evening travelled from Essex to the Peak District for a day out we are all accountable for our actions and every action has a consequence.

Just to say that there were 683 murders excluding Greater Manchester and 85,000 women and 12,000 men (16-59) experienced ra£e or sexual assault in England and Wales alone. That's about 11 of the most serious sexual offences (of adults alone) every hour.

That's pretty frightening. I hadn't actually realised that nearly 100,000 people are experiencing life changing assaults each year..

Who said anything about the dead of night? The virus doesn't select a time that's best to spread, but a curfew from say 9 onwards would keep groups of teenagers off the streets for starters. The police are stretched hence extra help from the military.

Any shop owners deliberately flouting the rules, up ramping prices up...close them down, they are quick enough visiting pubs and clubs etc

All monies raised from fines, to go directly to the NHS or helping to support businesses.

Live the history... if you spent significant time in Germany or indeed Berlin you would very much appreciate how their post war history, reunification and their self imposed learnings for Ww2 formed what is probably one of the best examples of democracy and liberalism in the world.

If you spend time studying the era of the 3rd Reich you will find hardcore nazi policy came from a small fraction of society. Their are many examples of fine humanity to be found within Germans throughout the time too.

Also never forget the role Britain and France played in creating the utter monster that was the third Reich. We formed the environment for Hitler to gain power and abuse it in such horrific ways.

Not sure what we gain by pointing out other countries difficulties. The French don't seem to have got vaccines going yet. But if the lockdown rules and enforcement are as described... Does that not sound a clearer and more enforceable way? We are all in this together like it or not and it's in all our interests all our near neighbours solve this problem quickly. I wish the French good fortune getting vaccines going soon.

The French population are the most sceptical in Europe when it comes to having the vaccine. Therefore the government are being cautious. You have to have a consultation with your doctor to give your informed consent, if you are elderly you may need a relative with you at the appointment. You can't be vaccinated until 5 days after the consent to give you time to change your mind.

We are in a shitty situation and as well many people are suffering emotionally with trying to do their best whilst others, on the face of it, couldn't give a hoot. And the media just love to make a story out of something. Eg 2 women break the rules and do something silly... Get fined... Let's have 2 days of headlines about it and promote arguments and division.

I think we should try and be a bit more matter of fact about things. Break the rules, get fined, pay the fine, next. People are going to make mistakes and some people are going to be twats. We don't need to revel in the schadenfreude of people making bad choices. Stronger together.

The story about the walkers made the news mainly because they thought they had nothing wrong and then the police have seemingly backtracked.

I'm not a huge fan of some parts of the media ,but there job is to report the news,which is what Thet did.

This angle of trying to implicate the media into it,is ridiculous.

I get what you mean, my anecdotal story wasn't splashed on the news or sensationalised though. Just a bit fucked up that a person who is supposed to be upholding the law is pissing on them exact laws. I wouldn't really of called it a mistake either. They knew what they were doing.
