Due to the simple cell structures of viruses, they mutate constantly. Most mutations are too insignificant to be concerned about, but some will make a distinct new with some different characteristics. There will be literally thousands of mutations.

It's fairly common knowledge that the covid in Asia is slightly different to the covid in Europe though. It's not news anymore, it's what a virus does.
Until it actually impacts our scientific research or renders all the efforts of pre treatments or vaccines null though I simply can't get excited about it.

No, it's exactly how evolution works. It is something to be studied not feared just because it's happening. It could lead to a more deadly disease, it could lead to one that fails and dies out. The main issue is it is a moving goalpost, from a scientific standpoint, this is why we get so annoyed with people that adopt the attitude that "I'm young so it won't hurt me and if I get it I'm safe" every infection allows the chance for the virus to change, so even if you are safe, you could lead to it changing and therefore the goalpost moving. It doesn't mean the current treatments and vaccines won't work, but it does keep changing things. This makes the task of getting it under control harder. |

Viruses are constantly mutating. That's what they do.
It's estimated that since the initial outbreak, there have been over 12,000 individual mutations within its genomes. Most are meaningless.
By reporting on a new varient, they are actually informing us that they're had been a significant, potentially meaningful mutation.
So, no, they are not dumbing it down, just not telling us something that is obvious and pointless. |

Natural selection tends to eventually kill off the most deadly versions of viruses as they kill off all their infected hosts. Having a long incubation was the one thing holding the virus back from doing so as it could spread lots before affecting the host.
If this varient is spreading quicker, that indicates there 'should' be a smaller time period for it to actually spread before the host becomes ill.
So it has lost it's one big advantage over other viruses, and should either kill itself off or become less deadly. |

It's natural mutation Tom, it happens in viruses and ourselves. The research on this new variant is work in progress.
We've amassed tons of knowledge on the mutations this year. Where populations travel less freely, it's natural that over time distinct geographical clusters emerge. |

There's been very limited release of any details on this variant, so we should remain cautious until any is published. |

It’s because variant or variation is the correct term for the result of changes to the original. Mutation is the process which creates a new variant. Version a of the virus mutated to create the new variant.
So calling it a mutated virus would be dumbing down for the people that missed out. |
