I've just been watching the news, reports on (in no particular order):
Record unemployment predicted
Record borrowing
Huge costs for PPE purchase during COVID
It got me thinking, why don't we manufacture our PPE requirements in the UK? A sort of nationalised industry, that would reduce costs importing and help with unemployment. |

Labour is too expensive in the UK
Everyone is going to have to work for 25p an hour to stop all these imports after brexit. |

There's nothing like learning from experience and great leadership from the top. Likewise, it's right to invest in our public services, rather than run them down.
We had a pandemic preparedness planning run a couple of years ago - Cygnus.
Part of this, which was a flu strain out of control, involved PPE requirements etc.
Boris Johnson still hadn't read the emergency report by summer 2020. We would benefit from greater levels of manufacturing in this country. We would also benefit from not re-electimg a group who have run public services down. Plus, chose to ignore the early warning signs after China released the full genome of the virus on January 8th this year and didn't plan or consult earlier epidemic preparedness evaluation reports that highlighted what we needed to do to be ready - we had a couple of years to do it.
We could have a surplus of PPE made here each year. If we don't order it when it's needed - preferably beforehand - we'll just never be ready to help to save the lives of the public and medical staff.
