I can’t listen to the daily briefing that often because of stupid questions....
Many of us are very critical of the government and their experts.
But criticising the government for not buying the (theoretical) moderna vaccine ahead of time... come off it.
Problem is, the government, probably for PR reasons, has now been bounced into buying five million doses probably at excessive cost.
Although it’s a few months off, it’s possible we’re also now taking supply away from a poorer country as well. |

It must really be galling for this government to be bounced into spending lots of money that’s not going to their pals. Although maybe we should check what consultancy is getting a hefty commission for this.
Sorry to be cynical, but they have made it the only way to be. |

That’s partly what I’m saying, it’s pretty clear now that the poorer countries are going to suffer enormously as the rich countries buy up stocks. |

Yes and no. Are you familiar with COVAX? Briefly it's a global collaboration to ensure equitable access to a vaccine. Richer countries will be paying towards vaccination costs in poorer countries. There will still be a queue though.
The other thing worth highlighting will be the essential role India will play in manufacturing the vaccine. |

Funny and well said. I thought the very same thing when at the same time as the media is irresponsibly gelling us all is now going to be OK, whipping up a storm about vaccines which have not yet completed testing, nor been approved for use nor how to manufacture, distribute and administer in industrial quantities at ultra low temperatures been completed.... Yet all will be back to normal in months?
Then in the next article they are hyper critical because the govt were 4 hours later than some countries in placing an order. What a crock of sh1t. |

Just a thought but as we are constantly reminded on here, covid kills the old and particularly those with underlying health conditions. Life expectancy in poor countries is lower due to illness, infection, malnutrition etc.
In Ethiopia , only 3% of the population is over 65 compared to 18% in the UK. According to Worldometer, Ethiopia has the 149th highest death rate from cover per 1M people.
So, my point is, those people most at risk from dying of covid are from wealthy countries because of the age demographics.
Also, i think you miss the point of vaccinations. It's not just about protecting individuals but also the population as a whole. Don't forget, whilst the vaccine is thought to be 90% effective(and less in the elderly) that leaves 10% still vulnerable. Therefore the only way to fully protect the elderly is to wipe out the virus completely and the only way to do that is to vaccinate the population.

It’s a fair point about the very poorest countries, yes, average life expectancy means that a vaccine won’t save many lives - although severe illnesses and particularly the effects of long covid on the rest of the population could still be terrible.
The UK is 26th in the world in per capita GDP, so there’s 180 odd countries poorer than us, who might have less access to a vaccine. A lot of those 180 (South Korea etc) will have comparable or longer life expectancies than the UK.

I think the media are as much to blame as the government in all the misunderstanding that's gone on this year. They discuss things that haven't been agreed. They whip up anger at all sections of the community. They have published contradictory guidelines that have confused people.
I used to read the headlines and watch the coronavirus daily briefing and what they reported on wasn't what was said.

The journalists at the daily briefings were awful all year. I think they helped divide the country and rile them up with all their negativity.
No matter what the government did they bitched about it. I think the government are pretty shit but they did some good stuff too in a situation that was and still is utter hell. |

This is not going to be popular... the richer countries pay to develop the vaccines, the populations pay tax , or invest in these firms . to support the companies. These richer countries then as with the UK,, give aid to the poorer countries and also huge amounts to charities, which saves lives and help a tremendous amount seeing lives etc. So surly it makes more sense to get our country back up and economy straight first. Because a broke country certainly won't be in a position the mess this will leave across the third world.
And please don't start banging on about the third world corruption, we all know it's there ,,it should of been dealt with years ago, and hopefully get this virus under control and the push to sort that out. |

Corruption is not exclusive to third world countries. I'd include lining the pockets of your pals through the awarding of untendered "emergency" contracts a form of corruption too. It's alive and well and right in our faces. |

The point of the post was not about the corruption, that was put in to focus on the main part being the virus and who pays, poor countries, etc getting access . As I said the corruption issue is for another time, that's a small issue compared tho the epidemic. |

They do a daily briefing on covid... wow...!!! we didnt know...lol....we try not to read too much about it unless its going to effect us, just reading the headlines is enough isnt it.... |

I’ve read a lot of the virus forum and yes actually there are quite a few knowledgeable people who contribute to it, with both clinical and scientific backgrounds.
And ok yes there some who contribute who aren’t quite so bright. |

Why, our government and others will be sending vaccine to poorer countries as you put it through Covax and other initiatives.
Don't forget that Covid-19 can and does infect people of all ages groups and though 25 -50 year olds are not as likely to die from it they can get seriously ill and in some cases need transplant surgery to survive |

It’s partly true. There are loaded questions aimed at getting a bad answer, but if you believe the decisions you made are the right ones you should be able to answer properly and confidently |
