According to studies done by the British Medical Journal and quoted here by Dentistry.co.uk, 78% of confirmed Covid infections are in people who are overweight or obese, and 62% of those who have died in hospital are either overweight or obese.
https://www.dentistry.co.uk/2020/06/11/overweight-obese-confirmed-covid/
The food industry has a lot to answer for - though I guess we knew that already for different reasons |

Nobody forces people to eat. They open their mouths and with their hands put the food in. So nobody else's fault but the individual. We are educated enough to know what we need to do. Cant blame anyone else |

The people who have died may have been overweight for many reasons. Many have had other health issues, which may have impaired their fitness or abilities.
I sense some elements of shaming and blaming, which helps nobody and is insensitive to those who have suffered, including having lost loved ones. |

And so do the parents who buy it and put it in their mouths... Its not always someone elses fault. Sometimes we just have to suck it up and admit we eat badly, we exercise badly and we know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. |

Findings were drawn from both a population cohort study (428.225 participants, 340 admitted with confirmed case) and another using electronic health records (17,425,445 participants, 5,683 COVID-19 deaths).
If you look at the number of electronic health records they are supposed to have looked at, that would take forever to review!! |

Wow, weight shaming at its worst with some if the comments on this thread. A little more understanding about medical conditions that can make weight loss difficult wouldn't go amiss here. Hypothyroidism being one, for example. As well as obesity, there may have been other health factors resulting in the covid deaths that the OP is recklessly quoting. |

Food poverty is not usually the fault of the individual.

Looking at the charts in the doctors for BMI they are way out, they dont consider bone density which varies, muscle mass...you can be exceedingly fit but according to the stupid tables clinically obese..they are a joke unless your super skinny..technically J is clinically obese at 5'10 and over 14 and a half stone..supposed to be between 11 and half and 12 and a half.....so if he got covid and died be classed as obese... |

They work as a good guide for most people though, it’s pretty obvious when someone is obese because of fat and when the scale is wrong because of muscle.

The article is factual, it’s been stated in other medical journals and by the governments scientific advisors.
Take a walk in any ICU department across the land. The majority are either elderly people with a previous condition, or overweight people typically males over 50.
I don’t like the word obese, so by overweight I mean very overweight.
One reason overweight people struggle is due to the effect their increased size has on their diaphragm and lungs. Their lung capacity is compromised which makes it harder to breathe under normal conditions, never mind when later in a hospital bed battling with Covid. Another reason is that their general health and fitness isn’t great, resulting in having a weaker immune system to fight the virus.
Upsetting for people, but sadly true.

No one is shaming or blaming. Its an individual s choice. Yes their are cases that are due to medical problems and sadly can do nothing but sympathise but mostly its unhealthy eating. Ive been overweight but took a new path and now im fit and healthy. It was a,life's choice and anyone who doesn't have health problems has that choice |

***Untreated hypothroidism
If someone knows they have hypothyroidism and don't treat it they are an idiot. If they do treat it they can't blame their obesity on it. People often blame their weight on their thyroid when in reality it is probably only ONE of the reasons they are overweight. Its almost as if no one with hypothroidism also overeats!! |

Add in that past 65 years of age the magnitude of dieing increases significantly.
If your black (bame) your twice as likely to die from it as being white.
If your Asian your 1.5 times as likely to be seriously ill or die.
As the overall population of the UK is predominately white Caucasian it would be expected to see more of those actually seriously ill or dieing however by ethnicity percentage its apparently not the case.
The media overall seem to hype up the impact more on the white Caucasian population with most stories centreing on white individuals and the impact on their loved ones.
Given that the Media is white male owned disproportionately and thats their main target demographic you can see why they hype that section.
I would like to see a breakdown of the figures of those dieing by ethnicity, their obesity, age, gender and weight, all the things that apparently affect how Covid is likely to affect you.
Then rather than lock away the entire population look for solutions that target those most at risk. |

It’s interesting to look at the phrasing of this but in reality it’s not even a story. We should take note of the word “overweight” which is defined by a persons bmi, a measure that a number of gym goers can tell you defines them as overweight.
Look at the percentage breakdowns on this per age group and you’ll see by the age of 35 66% of the population is by definition obese or overweight, fast forward to 65-74 year olds and it’s 77%.
When all’s said and done they practically marry up statistically. So, in effect the figures are saying covid deaths are equally represented in all groupings... for instance the 32% of non obese or overweight deaths is applied to the 33% of the 65+ population who are classed as normal.
In conclusion, weight has very little to do with survival rates. |

Whilst bum does not take in to account gym muscle builders for the maths at it’s simple level it works for the majority of cases. That old chestnut gets rolled out as a excuse quite regularly but let’s face it a medical professional or even most people on the street can tell the difference between an athletic muscle builder and somone who’s overweight because of excess fat. The former fall in to a small percentage in this country. |

I totally agree. I'm sick of this blame and shame culture that seems to be growing on a daily basis. Don't worry, us fatties will be OK next week, the self-righteous few will find other targets to pick on. Perhaps people with other medical conditions such as copd or heart disease will become their next ones. You miss the point... look at the breakdown for obese, overweight and normal. Take a measure from the 65+ U.K. population and the figures quoted represent the % split in the population.
78% of deaths are attributed to 77% of the population (obese + overweight), a mere 22% is attributed to... oh, a group that makes up the 23% classes as normal.
There’s no excuse... just a really obvious point that shows either the OP’s post, the original article or both are phrased in quite a misleading way. |

But it is a scientific fact that being fat makes you more susceptible to serious illness, as such it makes sense that fat people are more likely to die or suffer more seriously from COVID too - it’s hardly news however you try and cut the statistics. There is plenty of evidence and studies out there that it increases your risk of suffering in a serious way by a large amount. It’s not a blame game no one is blaming seriously overweight people for anything COVID relates it’s just stating the medical fact that being obese is bad and seriously increases your risks with COVID. |

The findings are saying that the death rates are consistent with weight rates.
The OP implies being overweight contributes to excess mortality.

Actually, they have presented “science fact” in these figures... in covid-19’s case the deaths seem to represent an equal split in the three body categories in line with the population breakdown... |

Do they put the food in fat peoples mouths ?
We ALL know that a lot of processed food contains lots of fat and sugar, it is totally an individual choice to consume it, yes a very few have a reason that makes them more liable to be overweight, the rest of us dont, of course in the modern world it's always someone else's fault and we mustn't offend anyone by pointing the blame at them |

I think some of the comments on this thread are disgusting.
I am overweight because I have an eating disorder. I have tried to get it under control myself, but it's too big a problem to deal with without professional help. I have tried repeatedly to get professional help and constantly been denied because the government has cut all funding for mental health problems in my area (including eating disorders that aren't directly impacting physical health).
So what do I do? I hate myself for being 'greedy' and 'lacking self control' but it is an addiction. It's hard enough to try and deal with without all the fat-shaming judgements. |

Most of the people I know are like me, we know we are overweight and it is unhealthy etc. but we have real serious issues that we just can't get any help or support for. It's not just because we are 'sitting and shoving foor into our mouths all day'. |

People are attacking the overweight.
Some people eat the wrong things do all the wrong things and look fine.
eiSome are overweight for medical reasons and do not allways eat badly.
It is easy to generalise on this and I feel supermarkets are the sinners here as they allways try to tempt us with things that are not good for us.
I admit to a mince pie weakess at this time of year.
Now I am overweight ok not the best diet if not the worse but I have health issues.
However before virus swam 6 days a week, now walking dispite arthritus.
My health according for my doctor is fantastic considering some health issues.
Yes there are many obese people but please do not generalise us fatter people.

"I think some of the comments on this thread are disgusting.

I know people in exactly the same boat. Even controlled with medication, losing weight with a thyroid issue can be an absolute nightmare. |

I just wish people wouldn't treat those of us who are fat like we are stupid. Most of the people I know are like me, we know we are overweight and it is unhealthy etc. but we have real serious issues that we just can't get any help or support for. It's not just because we are 'sitting and shoving foor into our mouths all day'. "

Disagree. I’ve put weight on recently during the menopause. I’m now 1-2 stones overweight. I have to answer for that - nobody else. I’m the problem and I’m the solution - which is the same for everyone who drinks too much, eats too much, smokes, takes illegal drugs etc etc.
We need, as a society, to stop looking to others to blame and start looking in the mirror.
Apparently over 50% of adults, myself included, are overweight or obese. Although some obviously have contributory health factors - most of us don’t!
We eat too much and we don’t exercise enough.
It’s time we all took ownership. |

Maybe. Maybe not.
The OP spins towards "fat people are more likely to die of Covid-19" and there's an implication that it's people's fault for carrying excess weight, a moral judgement.
The fact is that the percentages quoted mean that overweight people are dying in proportion to their numbers in the general population, and the fat shaming that's come in afterwards is misplaced. But people seem to enjoy it for some reason |

Of course they have a lot to answer for.
Do they put the food in fat peoples mouths ?
We ALL know that a lot of processed food contains lots of fat and sugar, it is totally an individual choice to consume it, yes a very few have a reason that makes them more liable to be overweight, the rest of us dont, of course in the modern world it's always someone else's fault and we mustn't offend anyone by pointing the blame at them
Tell that to the very few people that have thyroid problems.
Or take steroids for other medical conditions. "

This is true, but there are things that the food industry could do to help. For example, there is a lot of added salt and sugar in products, there is also a real lack of healthy snack/convenience food. If there was more healthy options that could be grabbed and eaten, then people who want to try to eat healthier would have options.

People can argue all they like about the causes of obesity.
But here are two unarguable facts
1. No human baby is born obese. They become obese in later life because of what they are fed on
2. During the last war when food was strictly rationed and sugary foods and fats were largely unobtainable, the British diet was at its healthiest ever, and obesity disappeared. Even for those with hypothyroidism.
Obesity is a problem of too plentiful supplies of junk food being too easily available for people to eat, and being constantly pressurised by advertising to eat them. |

I will also add that unhealthy junk food tends be cheaper than a healthy alternative |

With so many families with young children living below the poverty line due to ten years of crippling austerity and junk food is far far cheaper than healthy food - if your choice is ‘value chicken nuggets abs chips’ or nothing what would you choose to feed your kids? The shops have a lot of responsibility ... why is healthier food so much more expensive? |

That is a myth, fruit and veg are pence, for those that are too lazy to cut up fruit the supermarkets even do that for you and pack it in an plastic box for you.
Consume more calories than you burn then you put on weight that is true even with an underactive thyroid, which should be treated with thyroxine I know sometimes it can be more complicated to treat but that is rare and we are talking in general terms of the Brits being overweight and at a higher risk from covid. |

Another reason for the deniers to say it's not really that dangerous.

It's your fault if you think it's dangerous because you can't control yourself, despite the fact that it's a society level problem and it kills people in proportion with the levels of obesity.
Who needs facts when we have denialism and fat phobia, huh? |

And these days you don’t even have to walk to a shop or take away to get your junk food.
You just dial up and your pizza or Big Mac or KFC or whatever will be delivered to your door.
No calories expended to get it and a whole load taken in.
No wonder people become overweight. |

Well I’m assuming the potatoes and carrots were grown in soil (that would be the ground) and the chicken hatched from an egg and probably battery farmed. So grown rather than made.
The chips come from Potatoes also grown in that soil stuff but they are processed into chips.
Chicken nuggets come from those birdy things as well though being the cheaper nuggets probably not made from the breast meat. Then has to be processed into nuggets.
These foods are not ready meals so (shock horror) they need cooking. |

If you can turn on an oven to put oven chips and nuggets in am quite sure one could do the same to roast a chicken.
The chicken will take longer to roast.
If you can put beans in a saucepan you should have the necessary skill to put water in a saucepan as well to cook potatoes and carrots in.
Let’s be honest here, its not about healthy eating its about an easy life and if your little precious wants junk food then you give it to him/her.
Basically its about you cant be arsed to cook properly. hell in understand that I don’t always want to cook meat and two veg but i am not using the excuse of “its to expensive”. |

I volunteer with a charity that helps homeless, vulnerable and JAM people.
They often don't have a cooker with an oven; sometimes they only have a kettle or a microwave. They often have very few pans or cooking utensils, crockery, etc. They're often in fuel poverty, so actually cooking, and washing up afterwards, can be beyond their means. Have you ever tried washing up after roasting a chicken with only cold water and no fairy liquid? It's more, much more, than the cost of the ingredients.
Cheap food is bad for you and contains few nutrients. But if cheap food is all you can afford to buy and cook.... |

So the cost of fuel to wash up is more than the cost of the food ? To use a one KW kettle to boil water to wash up would cost about 2 pence
If you own a kettle. If your electric is on. If you have a functioning kitchen.
A "functioning kitchen" for some of our clients is just a kettle in a bedsit. "
Indeed. Pot noodle is at least warm. |

Heathier food is not more expensive - compare a Fish and Chip Takeway x 4 versus your local market vegetables and turkey / chicken cuts add pasta / rice and a sauce it’s less all the time - It’s more the thought of a 30 minute cooking time against the instant meal on a table and less washing up - People just have to want to change eating habits and make it lifestyle. |

Give some examples of the cheap food that is used (and the cost) that is cooked using only a microwave and or a kettle and i am sure that there are folk who can offer healthier alternatives.
Not trying to score points or anything here but sometimes some do know what others do not. |

They often have very few pans or cooking utensils, crockery, etc. They're often in fuel poverty, so actually cooking, and washing up afterwards, can be beyond their means. Try looking up this article by Jack Munro, "You Don’t Batch Cook When You’re Suicidal" (30th July 2020), which explains food poverty and rubbishes the privileged opinions of the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg.

There was a point in my life where I often had to make the choice between topping up my electric meter or buying food.
No hot water or heating as I couldn't afford gas AND electric.
Food was whatever had been marked down to pennies in the local supermarket. Never bought anything over 40p.
Luckily I managed to claw my way out of that hole, but it does leave you with a realistic view of poverty that never leaves you. |

Yes there are some people who don’t have enough money for proper food and have to use food banks or have no fuel to cook with.
But they are a minority
Fact remains that there are an enormous number of people out there who could cook but choose not to.
Sheer idlenes, and they have been seduced by the fast junk food industry
Remember this slogan - “Don’t cook - Just Eat”
That company should have been prosecuted in a sensible world |

This topic started out about fat people being more likely to die from covid, as you show poor people arent fat |

Well here’s the thing , almost two thirds of adults are classed as overweight or obese in the U.K. so it’s hardly surprising that two thirds of people dying from COVID are overweight or obese. It could be argued that it makes no difference. Apologies if anyone has already posted this. |

That makes no sense.
You don’t understand figures
If the two thirds who are obese didn’t die it wouldn’t mean the numbers would be made up by those who are non-obese
It would just mean the total number of deaths was reduced by two-thirds and we wouldnt have the huge number we have today
So in a real sense the large number of deaths we have is partly due to the high numbers obese people dying

About 2/3 of the adult population are overweight or obese.
About 2/3 of the people dying of Covid are overweight or obese.
If you remove the obese people from the equation... the same proportion of people are dying, you just have less people.
Hope that helps. |

Cooking and utensils and other bits of cooking (oil, salt and pepper sort of thing) are free?
They take equal physical/ mental energy or skills to prepare?
You're also assuming that people can cook."
Sorry but I’ve zero sympathy for grown adults who won’t take the time to learn the most basic cooking skills. Turn on the tv, use google etc etc
And if you buy chicken portions etc - or a whole chicken - it will tell you cooking times etc on the packaging.
It’s time we stopped constantly making excuses for every bad decision (nutrition or otherwise) that we all make.
People (assuming they are adults and without severe mental health issues) make decisions re food based on their budgets.
Whilst it can be argued that junk food CAN be cheaper - taking the effort to shop around and buy healthy items/vegetables & fruit when on special offer (my local Tesco and Aldi constantly has a range of fruits and veg on offer - and Tesco often has a meat or fish item on offer too!) means that we can all eat nutritious meals for the same price or less than junk food. |

Most people can or can figure it out. Some can't.
There are access issues here for the most underprivileged, and just saying "well it's possible for most people" doesn't solve anything or help anyone. |

Long story short.. most cases and deaths are attributed to poor health.
Doesnt seem such a scary statistic to me.. ppl who are unhealthy are more likely to die from diseases and viruses.
Whats scary to me is the reaction this world has had to corona virus and the way its been blown out of proportion and everyones just eating it all up. |

Yes if less were obese then less would die BUT if two thirds are obese and two thirds dying are obese then it’s obvious that the people dying whom are obese are directly proportional to the percentage whom are obese in the general population. |

"If you can turn on an oven to put oven chips and nuggets in am quite sure one could do the same to roast a chicken.
Basically its about you cant be arsed to cook properly. hell in understand that I don’t always want to cook meat and two veg but i am not using the excuse of “its to expensive”."
If that family have £2 for gas or electric that day, are they going to use the oven for 20 minutes for nuggets or 90+ minutes for a chicken.
Fresh chicken lasts 2 days at most, a kilo of nuggets will possibly feed a family for 4 days.
I guess the chicken nugget times because I don't actually know but the issue is bigger than just supermarket prices per kilo. Sticking with it though, I imagine you can buy nuggets by the kilo but a large chicken implies more than a kilo, how much is it for a small chicken or a kilo of breast?
And since when has baked beans been a bad thing? My kids are not keen admitted |

Chicken cooking time is around 20 minutes to the pound plus 20 minutes so a 1 kilo chicken would be around 64 minutes to cook (figures are approximations) pluse oven pre heating which would of of course apply to whatever you cook including nuggets.
Nuggets need around 20 -25 minutes to cook regardless of quantity so if you cooked 1 kilo of nuggets its 25 minutes, cooking them over 4 days would be 100 minutes., plus of course 4 days of oven pre heating.
It’s getting down to semantics here and binary thinking in that being cheap is bad but cost effective whereas cost more is better but not cost effective.
All i am saying is that don’t just follow the mantra that buying cheaper is actually cheaper, weigh it up yourself, work it out.
If you don’t want to then thats fine but don’t just tow the line of what’s always trotted out.
Baked Beans are okay but your better off with actual beans and tinned tomatoes and make your own.
Do i do that? No.
I buy Aldi baked beans but don’t eat them more than once or twice a week at most. At best a tin of baked beans contain around 50 per cent beans and 30 per cent tomatoes, both good for you.
Beans do though contain large amounts of salt and sugar (aside from the reduced varieties) which are what generally influences the taste and peoples buying selection. |

The food industry has a lot to answer for - though I guess we knew that already for different reasons"

I remember reading about an overweight woman with a morbidly obese child.
She blamed the government, saying no one told her feeding her child a diet of cola, crisps and chocolate was bad for the child... |

That is child abuse.
What happened to her and the child ?
Probably nothing I expect. |

"The food industry loads processed food with sugar and fat and then uses high pressure advertising to get people to buy it - especially kids who pester their parents for junk food.
Of course they have a lot to answer for."
And slick advertising with a load of fibs wrapped up in a kernel of plausible truth.
Sadly we live in a society that will not accept finger pointing even if it's true, it's just not acceptable. |

They were both sentenced to read the daily mail twice a day front to back and twice for the Sunday edition..
That way they would cease to be a burden on the good folk of ye olde England and it's colonies..
They would grow to be good citizens and one day they might if accepted be able to look down their noses and condemn others in a most condescending fashion..
And all would be well in the land.. |

"If you can turn on an oven to put oven chips and nuggets in am quite sure one could do the same to roast a chicken.
My kids are not keen admitted "
Wonder how many hours of TV and XBox and internet streaming are being used each day.
Not forgetting Sky or and Netflix or a few beers and 20 cigs a day.
It's all down to priorities.

Amazed at how many on the dole have all these and yet say they can't feed their kids. Volunteer for a couple groups that help the vulnerable and my eyes are constantly being opened to strange ideas that people hold too. |

"Did food companies force feed anyone?
Not aware of it myself.."
But they are a primary cause filling foods with sugar ect, this food breaks down quickly and insulin gets put into fat storage, so cheap mass produced food is very much to blame. |

Been there.
There was no point in even dreaming about heating a single room.

Well I suppose it depends what newspaper.
If she genuinely believes that ,there is clearly educational issues there.
On the other hand, the paper may have completely made up the story ,in another example of blaming the victim? |
