I think I can decipher this!
Let's say you had the flu last year or someone in your family or maybe even a few of ye. Ye got together at Christmas the whole family even nana.
A week or two later nana was admitted to hospital because the flu she caught went bad and she died in hospital sometime later.
Did you admit to all your family that you might have killed her? Or accuse your brother or sister or whoever else had the flu of killing nana?
You know. The way people are saying your killing people's nans by gathering these days..  |

I think the op makes an excellent point. Yes flu can be transmitted asymptomatically and can kill (even with a vaccine) yet nobody thinks about social distancing or locking down in flu season. |

The restrictions will be turned on and off like a tap as cases rise or decrease.
The government are not going to change their stance.
We need to just accept it and release this is our life now until there is a vaccine  |

But it is clearly a virus many many times worse than flu so your comparison is near worthless. |

I can assure when a vaccine is rolled out I will be first in the queue.
I'm highly vulnerable with a damaged immune system and type1 diabetes.
I've been hiding away since March and it's the hardest thing I've had to deal with.
If there's a chance a vaccine will work and I can live my life, then I'll take that chance over having to constantly hide away |

Even if a vaccine is effective. There's every chance the Covid could mutate year to year.
I don't think we should be relying solely on a Silver Bullet to regain some sort of normalcy |

So then they'll target the vaccine at a mutated antigen like they do with flu. Coronaviruses mutate far less frequently because they possess an in-built proof reading system for their replicated RNA. This reduces transcription errors and therefore reduces frequency of mutations. Influenza viruses do not possess a proofreading system and so transcription errors are more frequent and results in frequent mutation. It's like the scientists working on the vaccine understand viral genetics or something. |

some of the symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar, it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone, and testing may be needed to help confirm a diagnosis. Flu and COVID-19 share many characteristics, but there are some key differences between the two |

It's a good job that clinical trials results are thoroughly available, open to peer review and get government review on efficacy and safety. Unlike a gun with a bullet which has fixed catastrophic odds |

No. But then i do everything possible to minimise the chance of me passing along any dangerous disease to others, not just covid. I get the flu jab every year. If i am ill, i stay away from those that may be susceptible. I'll be getting a covid jab when one is available.
It means that last year i went nearly two months without being able to visit my elderly father. This year it has been eight months since i have been able to visit him (thank god for phones).
It's hard. But it would be much harder if I was responsible for killing him. |

No. But then i do everything possible to minimise the chance of me passing along any dangerous disease to others, not just covid. I get the flu jab every year. If i am ill, i stay away from those that may be susceptible. I'll be getting a covid jab when one is available.

Why do people still not grasp the actions that are being taken are not just to save some 82 year old grannies.
Get a piece of paper and calculator. Write down the number 10 and multiply by 1.3 and write it down below that number. Then multiply that number by 1.3 and repeat until you have 10 numbers. Then, add all those numbers together.
Then repeat the whole process but instead of 1.3 use 5.7 (5.7 because this is the covid R0 estimate by CDC).
The difference in those 2 numbers is how much worse covid can be.
Now repeat but using 0.9 which is the current minimum R0 rate in Scotland where cases have slowed.
That might help explain why we need to have measures we have in place.
