Week 3 of covid

Jump to: Newest in thread

By *orwegian Blue OP   Man  over a year ago

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

It's 3 weeks since I first had symptoms of Covid.

The first few days it was like a light cold or hayfever. That false sense of security it's gonna be easy.

The rest of that first week it got a lot worse, i couldn't get out of bed, my muscles and joints hurt so much, even codeine wasn't having any effect. Then as quickly as it started it was gone... yay, it's all over..

Nothing prepared me for what was to come.

Week 2 it came back with a vengeance.. headaches like the worst migraine ever, every inch of my body hurt, it even felt like my eyebrows even hurt. I ended up in hospital with suspected blood clots in my legs and lungs.

I struggled with breathing and it was as much as I could do to walk up the stairs with a break half way.

I'm now into week 3, I'm still in a lot of pain with swollen joints.

The cough is not going away although I have good and bad days with it.

The headaches come and go, fortunately pain killers now work on them.

I get out of breath very easily and have coughing fits which last for ages, leaving me in immense pain after and unable to breathe easily.

I have not slept properly for over 2 weeks now and am physically exhausted and it doesn't feel like this is going away any time soon.

I have apparently not had it too bad

So for anyone who thinks this disease isn't real, believe me when I say it most definitely is and can really make your day very bad.

OP, can I ask - did you lose your sense of smell? And, if so, was it before the other symptoms?

Various news agencies keep saying this is a major symptom, but I've not really seen it mentioned by anyone who's actually had covid.

That aside, hope you continue to recover well x

As much as I don't wish covid on anyone, I do hope that more people will come out with testimonials like this. It might make some people realise why we need to make a collective effort

Good friend of mine lost her sense of smell and taste and they still haven't fully returned, this was before they added it as a main symptom too. She luckily didn't get much worse than cold like symptoms and wouldn't likely have even been tested if not for her workplace testing her.

My gp is useless.

I have spoken with 111 on a couple of occasions, the covid helpline is very useful and well worth using if you have covid symptoms.

They put me in touch with a local GP who was very knowledgeable, she emailed the prescription to a chemist and even arranged for the medication to be delivered to me.

"Have you been tested positive then OP

How many of the symptons do you have to have before wondering whether to ring doc???"

I did test positive and I have to say that I have full admiration of the process, from initial booking, testing and even the track and trace app and the staff that subsequently contacted myself and those who were isolating as a direct result of my positive test.

I initially had a sore throat and a cough which came on overnight, I thought it was a bit of a mild cold but decided to get tested; better to be safe than sorry.

I could have left it, a few days later I was feeling extremely unwell. Not sure at that point I would have had the energy to get up to go and get tested.

I probably would have also spread it to others as in all likelihood, thinking it was a cold, I would have continued to go to the shops completely oblivious.

Sense of taste did change for me, sense of smell went totally.

The first I noticed of it was coffee started to taste like dentist mouth rinse.

It progressively got worse, bread and plain crisps tasting of bad fish, orange squash tasted just plain nasty.

Not that I had an appetite but when food makes you feel sick trying to eat it, any desire to eat rapidly disappears.

Glad to hear you are getting better.

This virus is definitely real, my experience was very similar to yours, lasting around 10 weeks all together.

Whilst I disagree with the strategy and the statistics, anyone who struggles with Covid has my sympathy.

Sounds rough. Hang in there, there is much misinformation around covid and I'm sure you know yourself everyone has some form of opinion of treatment. What matters is you, take time for yourself, listen to your body and simple things that help with cold and flu (like steamy showers etc) will also help here and might make you feel a little better but wont be as effective. Best of luck and take it easy

Keep an eye on it. Cold and flu session will make signs of covid more difficult to spot. Be mindful of changes to smell or taste (plus cold and flu symptoms). Also dont be afraid to call the helpline 111 or 112 to pick their brains about any of the symptoms you experience. Best of luck and stay safe

Yeah its nervous times being exposed to those who flaunt every bit of guidance. Dont get me wrong I dont agree with how the government has handled it so far but still, there was a guy I'm my home town who spent most of his time making posters showcasing how it was all a scam and 5g was the real thing and loads of other balls. Cunt actually egged my house because I'm a scientist and according to him, we are part of the problem lol

If you get the headaches with the cold, go and get a test.

You have nothing to lose from being tested. The results do take between an day or two to come through so you will have to isolate during that time.

Better to know for sure than be part of the problem.

As I stated on another thread, it has occurred to me that lots of what the conspiracy theorists spout is very similar to the rantings of a family member who has schizophrenia with delusions of grandeur.

Its a paranoia or an obsessive compulsive disorder, maybe even a form of mental illness that drives them to believe the government are interested in their every movement or that a tinfoil hat will save them from radio waves.

Or maybe they are just simpletons willing to believe the rantings of the mentally ill.

I may make light of this, however seeing the mental anguish of my relative and witnessing him having to be sectioned repeatedly, this is no laughing matter.

It is the few that have ruined it for the rest.

Many shops, restaurants and bars have been going above and beyond to ensure their premises are covid secure and strictly enforcing rules.

I visited an All bar one several weeks ago and they needed to be commended on what they were doing.

On entry to the premises, you had to show the staff member at the door that you have checked in on the NHS covid app, if you didn't have the app, you wasn't allowed in. They were reinforcing face mask wearing by customers when not seated and the staff could be seen using hand sanitiser prior to approaching any customer and all were wearing masks and/or visors.

I think it is mainly the need to believe something, anything, that will make the entire situation easier to deal with. Some people's way of dealing is to look at things logically and take appropriate, well-informed steps, whereas for others it is to lash out and blame anyone and everything. First it was China, then 5G, Bill Gates got a shout out and now it mainly seems to be Boris & Co.

I think the increased spread of misinformation also has a massive part to play. Remember at the start of lockdown when people were following bogus "advice" to get rid of the virus, including raising their internal body temperature and taking deep breaths as a test for whether you had covid. Look at how Trump has amassed millions of supporters through barefaced lies in his tweets which have incredible reach. During WW2 we were asked to make a collective effort and happily did so because we only really spoke to our neighbours and didn't have exposure to all this manipulation from different people through external sources.

No antibiotics don't cure covid, they are used to help stop the secondary infections brought on by covid, along with blood thinners

Thanks for posting OP.. I really hope those people who do not think this virus is real read it!

I know a few of my friends suspected they had it around jan Feb this year, one has since been told she has covid scarring on her lungs.. and has not made a full recovery.

Also I know a student doctor who has got it.. she was in intensive care, was making improvements so moved out of ICU, but is now back in ICU as her lungs cannot fight off the virus.

OP I wish you a speedy and full recovery xx

Your talking about catching it and they stopping it spreading to you chest.

You said nothing about a secondary infection.

How did the they catch ?

Are you vulnerable so got tested quicker and treatment quicker ?

I had all ths symptoms including the breathing and was told just to self isolate.

I am honestly interested how you got medical intervention before it spread to your chest.

If you get the headaches with the cold, go and get a test.

You have nothing to lose from being tested. The results do take between an day or two to come through so you will have to isolate during that time.

Better to know for sure than be part of the problem. "

And where do we get these tests??

Some people say you have to travel miles for one

You can book through the NHS covid app or online - https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test

Testing you now do yourself at most locations, there are a handful of staff there to assist but it's you that does the swab on yourself. It takes a few minutes to do the whole process. The test centre nearest me was only a 10 minute drive away with another 15 minutes in the opposite direction. Further test centres were listed approximately 30 minutes away in various directions.

I booked and had the test two hours later, I received my result 36 hours after the test.

No antibiotics wont work at all. Some antivirals might help releave some of the symptoms but its difficult to damange the virus itself one it infects the cell - kinda have to let it run its course at that point

Sorry to hear you’ve had it and still suffering.

You said on the first day it was like a cold or hayfever. I thought cold symptoms were not covid. Can you say what day did you get tested and then diagnosed?

"Sorry to hear you’ve had it and still suffering.

I woke with a sore throat and a cough, just like any other sore throat that you get this time of year. It was the cough that felt different from any normal cough, I could feel it hurting just a little in my lungs. Nothing major, just like a little twinge but something that seemed unusual. I guess thats what made me decide that what I was considering was a cold or at worst, man flu, was worth having tested.

Getting the result was a bit surreal as at the time, I still felt ok. My voice had gone full Phil Mitchell, but that's not unusual when I get a sore throat.

I hadn't had a temperature at any point and had I not had the test, would have been totally oblivious that I had covid at that point.

u would "continued to go to the shops thinking it was a cold".....?? Sorry just kind of contracts your original post...

"Have you been tested positive then OP

How many of the symptons do you have to have before wondering whether to ring doc???

"But wrote about terribly ill he was... But would still have gone to the shop if he didn't have a swab..... "

Like I have said, the initial symptoms started with a sore throat and a bit of a cough.

At any other time any of us would have taken some cough medicine, sucked a cough sweet and in an extreme case taken some paracetamol.

I had no temperature and nothing that really defined this as anything more than a common cold or strep throat.

In the past this wouldn't have stopped me, or anyone else, going to work, going to the shop or getting on with my life.

We have all done it, and anyone that says they haven't is telling porkies.

The only reason I got a test is I had a niggling doubt it was just a cold.

I knew that if I entered into the NHS app that I had symptoms,I would have to isolate while waiting for the result and like others, I had heard the scare stories that results were taking days to come through. I knew it was the correct course of action, all things considered and the inconvenience of having to isolate for a few days while I waited for the result, should it have been negative (which is what I honestly thought it would be) was far more important than being able to go to the shop or pop to the local bar and take the risk of infecting others.

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

For anyone who is concerned they have a cold but think it could be covid, please get a test.

It's really that simple...

The Covid tracker app is really good when it comes to verifying the symptoms. It has a very concise list of symptoms that the team at Kings College and Zoe have amassed while studying the effects of covid.

Over 4million people report daily on the app whether they are well or have symptoms and the data is used by the Government and NHS to assist with the planning for the short term way forward.

If you haven't downloaded it, I thoroughly recommend doing so.

Totally agree with what you are saying. Our son had been asked to self isolate as someone in his college group had tested positive. 7 days later he told us he had a headache and kept feeling dizzy. We didn't think anything of it and put it down to lack of sleep. Told him to rest and gave him paracetamol. Next day he was the same so gave him paracetamol again. Following day he wasn't feeling any better. Very tired and achy and still kept getting headaches and dizziness. We went on the government website to book a test but it stated you had to have either a temperature, loss of smell or taste or a new persistent cough. He had none of these symptoms but we got him tested anyway as found out that day that the person he sits with at college had also tested positive. His test came back positive. He didn't have many symptoms though and was well again in a few days. 5 days from him initially showing symptoms the OH started showing symptoms. He also tested positive. Like you he was really poorly. Had all your symptoms plus a high temperature of 38.3. Nosebleeds. Disorientation. He said he'd never felt so ill.

Thankfully he's much better now. Still not 100%. Gets tired and out of breathe easily and still hasnt got his smell or taste back.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

I'm no doctor but if you can (please check) try to take some ibuprofen for your joint pain.

Take care and stay safe x

Thank you for posting about your sons experience with covid, it's this kind of detail that seems to be lacking and driving the uncertainty for others.

With regards ibuprofen, you may remember that a false claim was made around ibuprofen worsening the effects of covid.

When I was really unwell and in much pain with my joints, I was concerned about taking ibuprofen. I spoke with the covid helpline on 111 who put me in touch with a local GP (Not my own as they could not offer a telephone consultation for 10 days), she prescribed ibuprofen gel, she sent the prescription to the chemist who delivered it to me within a few hours.

The gel does work really well and reduced the pain to manageable levels.

I was also prescribed codeine but told to take it only when really required as beside it's potential for addiction, it can also suppress your breathing.

My mate woke up yesterday feeling a bit crap, a bit achey but nothing that wouldn’t normally stop him going to work. He took his temp, just over 38, decided to stay home and book a test.

He managed to get one the same day and got his results back this evening - he’s positive.

He’s still running hot at mid 38’s, but feels cold and is in a fleece with a throw on him. Spoke to him on the phone, the cough is there, dry, not deep and not a tickley-type one either.

He thought it was just a cold.

Any symptoms, stay home, get tested and let’s get out of this shit-show

I proved positive for covid back in April both myself and my hubby.

I had NO symptoms whatsoever when I got tested and only got tested because I was in the car at the time the hubby got tested.

I only got symptoms a week later which at first was like a mild cold but developed into extreme tiredness aching all-over and then no taste or smell at all.

I'm better now but still sleep allot more than I use too.

I have also given convalescent plasma twice as my immunity was very good.

I wish anyone who gets it a speedy recovery

For some, not all.

Around 60% have a temperature, opposed to approx. 95% for flu and colds.

Cannot remember the other percentages for early stage symptoms, they are on the kings college covid symptoms website.
