In 911

1600 people died from Covid in the last week in the UK

If planes were hijacked and killed this many on a weekly basis would people be crying for business as usual ?

Probably

As long as planes are flying people will want to go on them.

Exactly no they wouldn't.

The key board warriors would now pretend they were brave enough but would remain firmly behind their keyboards!

The keyboarders warriors would not be so keen to fly if that was the case, the age demographic of 911 deaths was very different to Covid. It’s the well I will be already mentality

A terrorist attack is a freak occurrence. Deaths from disease are not.

Nobody is calling for business as usual, we want sensible adjustments not knee jerk panic. There is a very real possibility that Lockdowns cause more fatalities and long term illnesses than Covid.

And conversely a pandemic is a freak occurrence.

There is a real possibility that failure to lockdown causes more fatalities andong term illnesses from Covid.

There is a bigger possiblity that they don't. We can't afford for the NHS to be overwhelmed.

Are you suggesting Covid was pre meditated, like a terrorist attack?

Not arguing against lock down. But lock down is lock down... Not leave the shops and schools and airports and trains and tubes and buses and takeaways and unis and otherwise call it what it is... A few more restrictions for a few more people. That may or not be enforced.

I am very worried with Xmas coming, for the emotional well being of so many people who are being put under pressure... Stronger together people. Text a mate and check in on them.

If my plane went down then I would die. If I got Covid there is a very high chance I would be absolutely fine. So it’s a terrible comparison.

And before you start calling me selfish or saying I’m killing your granny I am not suggesting it doesn’t matter that Covid kills the elderly and vulnerable.

If you were one of the 1600 who died with covid last week... You'd be dead. Next week will be even higher. That's the comparison. Not if you caught it or not.

Covid is not a freak occurrence. Its been known for years that we were going to be susceptible to an outbreak like this.

Hence why pandemic response teams were created and playbooks created to be used in such an event.

Just many governments thought they knew better than the scientists and ignored all the evidence.

You fuck with the environment and the environment fucks you back.

There are 7.8 billion people on this planet so that number is tiny, I mean really really tiny, even world wide deaths are still very very very very small.

No we can't... who wants to be the one they turn away from having a heart attack because the hospital is full up of covid-19 patients

The OP asked if we would still want business as usual is planes were going down. Would I go on an aeroplane if they were going down left right and centre. No. However I’m not scared of getting Covid and if we were told we could have business as usual I would accept that.

Ok I may have more experience then most as I had most of my family getting covid and sadly My dad passing away from Multiple Organ failure brought on by covid. Most people would think my view point would be I be all in for Lockdown 2 but I'm not. I believe we shouldn't of let the schools and colleges open and we should of went straight into focused protection instead of full lockdown and made all the convention centres in major cities into Covid Hospitals run by the NHS with help from the Royal Army Medical Corps freeing up wards in our hospitals to tackle the mounting un-diagnosed cases of cancer and people needing major surgery. I heard a great saying from someone saying 'that we should be playing chess with the virus' then running and hiding as it here to stay so we need to find a better way then locking down the country as the damage from locking down could cause more harm then good and we could have a mental health time bomb and a huge rise in deaths from factors such as un-diagnosed diseases such as cancer and Heart disease etc.

You speak a lot of sense. After best part of 9 months of trying to get people to change behaviours (and it worked for a while and many people are coping with it OK) but it's time for a more intelligent approach. No idea what the answer is, but broad brush approach may not be the best one. As an example, areas with low infections... Well why do they need to lock down? Areas with high rates, need to do something differently.
