Dunno what to believe any more. There is always someone spinning the story in a different way.
So if A student has been £ 6000 who do you think is going to pay it ?
Mickey mouse ?
Don't students borrow money off the state
Oh yeah you and me in the form of higher taxes. All seems rather daft to me. I suppose they could lock them up. What a horrible path we are treading.
More covid madness.

Here we go again. Let's bash all students because one has been convicted of breaching the rules. She's obviously wrong and correctly fined, but she's not representative of every student. It certainly wasn't students in Bolton who failed to isolate, went on pub crawls and seeded a massive spike in Bolton. They were early 20s guys with day jobs. I don't go round bashing all men who have jobs. FFS. Focus on the facts, rather than trying to project your own version of events. |

They borrow money from the student loans company not from the taxpayer and they pay it back when they earn enough to do so.
It's not coming out of your pocket.
However, the money should come from the taxpayer and it should be free, not a loan, as it used to be.
Look at it as an investment for the betterment of society. They'll usually earn more and pay more taxes, putting more into the system than those who pay less in but reap the same benefits should they need them.
An educated population is a good investment. |

Ohhhhhhhhhhh this is TOO good. Bash The Student Bingo (Covid era edition)
Student loans - tick
Massive exaggeration of a single event to include all students - tick
Comments about "huge groups" not social distancing (they live in households that can be 12-14 strong) - tick
How many more for the full house? |

All this thread goes to show is why Anders tegnes was right about his attitude to the epidemic management.
It's not surprising he was right as he's proven himself in many real life epidemics and knows real life implications.

Well from what I've seen here, it's white working class, especially men, who flout the rules. But that's not to say I feel the need to bash men from a white working class background. Can we not just all be friends and stop trying to divide? No one group is any better/worse than another. Little old ladies with blue rinse perms are shit at social distancing in Sainsbury's. Down with the grannies! No. |

Salford Crescent railway station and bus stops are also directly outside the uni. Does that mean every person who boards at these places are Uni of Salford students? |

I wonder how many people uninstall the nhs app and make sure to give a false name and number to track and trace due to that article?
What stinks the most is fuck all happened to the Scottish MP who knew she actually had covid and still chose to go 400 miles on a public train. I'm sorry but her crime was worse! Yet she gets of scot free.

why is that harsh, if you break most laws and cant pay the fine, you get time instead, why should this be different, without harsh penalties, people wont pay any attention to it, or pay 50p a month for years, if it stops just one other doing it then its worth it, and if you say that it will ruin her life, then tough, if you cant do the time dont do the crime, we have become to soft on law breakers |

It stinks, but it is hardly surprising as she is an MP and can do what she likes.
I just hope her constituents remember her stupidity at the next election, but i doubt they will; and she will continue in her well paid well protected world. (like them all). |

Do you mind me asking if your frequent observations of a bus stop wholly used by students, within the university, is a hobby or a professional role you have? I teach students in Manchester city centre and confess I do not observe the bus stops for criminal elements in such depth. I'm wondering if I'm neglecting a key aspect of my professional responsibilities or whether I should take up a new Covid era hobby? Kinda like train spotting, I suppose....... |

While I agree an educated population is a good thing I think the days of students going on to earn more (More enough to make a difference anyway) are long gone. It pretty much started going downhill when paid for further education turned itself into a cash register.

the problem is, that if we all have a degree, then it becomes worthless, ive worked with many students in my line of work, and alot regret going down that route. |

"Where the fuck is that girl gonna get 6k from?
the choice is pay or jail time, buut im sure bank of mum and dad will step in, negaiting the punishment unfortunatly
Can she get banged up?
That seems v harsh that
why is that harsh, if you break most laws and cant pay the fine, you get time instead, why should this be different, without harsh penalties, people wont pay any attention to it, or pay 50p a month for years, if it stops just one other doing it then its worth it, and if you say that it will ruin her life, then tough, if you cant do the time dont do the crime, we have become to soft on law breakers
True.
Probably why we have one of the biggest prison populations in europe.
and most know that, they know they will get away with a slap on the wrist, as there is no where to lock them up, our sociaty needs a reboot, back to when people gave a fuck
Being in prison is not a slap on the wrist.
yet again you didnt read my post , the prisons are full so nobody gets custodial, so they get a slap on the wrist instead
The prisons are too full so no one goes to prison anymore..seriously?
there was a d*unk driver in our area who killed 3 people, got a suspended sentance and a driving ban, he didnt even have a licence to start with, so yes seriously, he should be doing time"
He should be but the reason he isnt is nothing to do with prisons being full. |

Gone a bit quiet on this front but it was only for those serving 14yrs or more anyway.

The system has run at around 95% capacity for 20yrs or more because no Government has increased the prison capacity by diddly squat.
Meanwhile the population increases, crime rises etc. Why the hell do you think the automatic 50% tariff came in the first place? Out of th goodness of our hearts? Because they’d all turned into angels?
I remember a certain person saying carrying a knife would get you five years, it doesn’t even get you five minutes!!

There have been at least 7 students fined the full £10k in Nottingham.
They held houseparties despite being specifically told not to by the Universities.
When Enforcement Officers and Police called, they refused to take any responsibility and so got fined.
Many other students have been fined lesser amounts. |

"Here we go again. FFS. Focus on the facts, rather than trying to project your own version of events.
if you read my op, you will see that i said that isnt all students, many others flout the rules, but from what ive seen, they seem to be the worse demografic, i may be wrong, but its what ive seen first hand
How do you know they’re students? Do they have badges telling you?
well the fact that they get on the bus outside of a uni, kind of gives it away dont you think????
Salford Crescent railway station and bus stops are also directly outside the uni. Does that mean every person who boards at these places are Uni of Salford students?
no it doesnt, but the one im talking about is inside the uni and is only used by students, the bus stops there on route to the city, and its miles from anywhere else, nobody else would have a reason to be there"
So you’re at that bus stop too?
Because in your opening post, you said students crowd around you at the bus stop.

6 grand?"

Here in Norwich three students were fined 10,000 each for holding a party at their place. A neighbour who couldn't sleep due to the noise called the police who turned up and found 100 people there. Rumour has it that one of the fined students has since become covid positive. |

Yep because judges regularly tell all and sundry about the confidentially judicial guidelines that are given. |

Fuck that for a game of soldiers. Enjoy your porridge in this mad mad world we live in.
It would be like allowing them to be sent to a different sort of university where they could learn all sorts of interesting things. It would be a right eye opener for them. Probs do Henry and Rupert a lot of good really.

There's over 35,000 students at the University of Manchester (that's 1 university, doesn't include MMU etc). That total number of students penalised is 11 across broad geographic areas of the UK. Yes, I'm aware there's more, but of the overall student population of the UK, it's so small so as to barely be a grain of sand in the desert. The overwhelming majority of students are a) behaving fine, b) utterly pissed off at being confined to tiny bedrooms and unable to do anything other than stay there. They were told they had to come on campus to study, so they did. |

Sounds like she still has a fair bit of studying to do before being allowed out on her own..... If that snippet happens to be true. |

Its very much true. Students at another house party broken up told Enforcement Officers that "they were stopping them having the time of their lives"!
And just to balance things, a shopkeeper was fined and shut down, aa he had recorded a positive covid test but was still trading.
His defence was that "he was ok to trade as he was wearing gloves and a mask".
The whole of Nottinghamshire now goes into Tier 3 on Friday! |

Fed up of the student bashing.
Yes, students are getting infected more than most but there are reasons.
They were brought back to uni in September so that the unis can justify the £9500 fees and collect the thousands of pounds in rent every week.
They are living communally in groups of 6+ with people from.all over the place. Covid is very infectious- if one person has it, they will all get it.
They're an easy target and dont deserve the bad label |

I take it you are not from Winchester as your profile has stated. It takes 10 min to walk to the city centre from the Uni of Winchester, so not miles from anywhere. Currently there are no covid-19 cases in the Halls at the UofW! Sounds like they are being quite responsible |

While I enjoy reading these broad, sweeping generalisations being made about students, as a student I find them to be ridiculous. Yes, of course there are plenty of students who are flouting the rules, however I read only yesterday of an 80+yo lady who said she didn't care for wearing a mask because she'd already lived a lengthy life... and there are many other stories like this!
On a daily basis I see middle-aged persons walking in and out of shops, restaurants, bars and petrol stations, not wearing masks. While some may be exempt I refuse to believe they all are!
Step down from your high horses and realise that people of all ages, genders, races, etc are flouting the rules and stop trying to find one demographic to blame, it's a little pathetic. |

A very good and salient point.
All you really need to do is worry about yourself and your loved ones, and take care to protect others too, even complete strangers. We all have agency for our own actions.

While I get that people from all ages are flouting the rules, your 80 year old isn’t doing it by throwing house parties with XX people.
The minority of student aren’t doing students a favour by flouting rules in the most headline grabbing way.

No one is blaming students per se.
Just the small minority that have taken it upon themselves to break the rules in sometimes spectacular fashion.
Having a banned houseparty with 100 people there, is bound to grab the headlines, where a single person fined for not wearing a mask wouldn't do.
Nottingham has gone further than most, and have banned alcohol sales from shops etc after 9pm. |
