"Doubt it very much, in the UK at least. I think they're trying to get everyone's hopes up so they co-operate with the "short term" extra measures."
It does make it seem like there's an end in sight... IF they can get people to take it |

Even if there was a vaccine in a few weeks would there be enough of it? It will take ages to produce enough for every country. The flu vaccine is being rationed as they can't even supply enough to meet the demand |

"According to some of the "news"papersMore chance of seeing Santa flying through the sky bringing presents"
You need the noraid tracker to do that, the vaccine will come from hospitals and surgeries. |

I hope there correct but I'm more inline with your beliefs.

There is a planned roll out for immunisation should a vaccine be manufactured.
1st = care homes and staff
2nd = nhs frontline staff
3rd = 80 years plus
4th = 70 years plus
5th = 60 years plus and people with major health issues
6th = 50 year plus and major health issues |

They may have a vaccine that has had some positive clinical trials; but getting it approved, produced and delivered will take far longer

There's an expedited process going on. I'll agree Christmas seems unrealistic, particularly for people getting jabs, but what I've been hearing (not from the press! I've been listening to science podcasts) is that vaccines could begin to roll out next year. (In stages depending on need) |

The researchers are playing their cards very close to their chests. No vaccine has ever been developed so quickly and while some of the processes for approval are being expedited, it’s a massive task to get a working vaccine developed so quickly. |

Actually, there are processes where they're being much more open than usual.
It is a massive task. This will break all records. But it's the most concentrated and well funded push of medical research in history. |

You're welcome to your lockup forever then hun
If we don't get enough vaccine uptake, lockdowns will have to continue.Not for me i will be having the vaccine. "
Ditto.
I've heard discussion that a vaccine might stop you getting sick but not from catching it and spreading it. So "you guys take the icky vaccine I don't want to take the risk" might backfire... |

Although it may seem rushed, the principal of this vaccine is something scientists have been working on for decades.
The technology to make it possible has been improving exponentially and what was really lacking was the funding and in reality the purpose.
They now have both so I think we will have several safe effective vaccines very soon.
We will need several as what may be very effective in some will be completely ineffective in others. |

"According to some of the "news"papers"
Don't listen to the news papers, that's pure sales headlines as it's what people want to hear.
Genuine medical sources are saying they'll have one by spring and then ready for this time next year. That's the reality. |

Last week I received an e mail from my local health authority asking if I would participate in a vaccine trial and it stated it would mean multiple clinic visits over a 12 month period so that particular vaccine if successful is a long way off |

I would have though you need to create Herd immunity with the vaccine before you can withdraw any protection measures. Vaccinating only a certain demographic on a priority timetable won't achieve that so it would seem likely it will be a very long time before we can say that the vaccine has made everything safe again . |

"There will not be a vaccine, at best a flu-like jab that will be given to the high risk.
Is a flu like jab not a vaccine? "
Yes. Between this and Captain Caveman who wants us all to die of childhood illness because that’s the will of God, this thread is off the scale with stupid.

If you Google "Bodies in Russia", some perhaps not exactly reliable media sources (such as the Daily Heil) come up with stories about morgues running out of space and bodies piling up. |

hurrah
have your '50% at best chance of working, by reducing symptoms, for a six month period' vaccine
i guess that counts psychologically as 'we've done our best' and then we get to ignore the deaths and move on? i wonder what those 82 year olds will die of instead once we've solved covid. or do people live forever now and every death is an avoidable tragedy? If so, we could move on next to the 40 000 uk annual deaths linked to air pollution. that mostly just involves not driving your car, so we don't even need a vaccine. or maybe we could look further afield and eradicate the malaria that kills half a million people a year (the under 5s are most at risk so that's a lot of 'total years of life' lost compared to covid which mostly kills the over 80s)
it's great how much we care now that we are literally willing to spend all our money and our children's money to extend life by a few months. imagine what we can achieve with this new mindset once we've solved covid.

Absolutely this. There may never be a vaccine and even if there is, in say spring/summer next year, it will take a while to properly roll out and assess its effectiveness. We’re in this for the long haul. |

Has there been a reason to create a vaccine as fast as this one in modern times with such advancements I'm technology and understanding of viruses and the immune system?
There are reasons why these vaccines for covid can be developed quicker. For example:
Oxford vaccine uses a delivery system that has been used before that has been adapted for covid.
Production of the vaccine has already started. Usually production of the vaccine would take place after clinical trials.
Clinical trials are on a far larger scale which means that results can be obtained far quicker.
Regulatory review is undertaken faster in an epidemic, because more staff and resources are dedicated to the review process.

When you say "mostly kills over 80s" the average age is 82. This means half of people who die are under 82. A small number of these will be 80 or 81 but most will be under 80. Probably about 45% are under 80 so your "mostly" is hardly an overwhelming majority.
6,000 people in the UK under the age of 70 have lost their lives due to covid despite only 7% of the population having caught the virus.

Not true they have developed them in under a year in the past its the clinical trials that drags it out to years. |
