Ships & giggles in Preston is serving 1p meals, I wonder if this will catch on in other venues

No different to what several of my friends and I were doing last week - ordering a meal each that we left on the next table untouched in order that we could enjoy a drink or 2.
If any local business is open, I will support them.

He's already had one visit by the local enforcement people. He is obviously a pub and not a restaurant.
I know its harsh, I know its challenging but short term pain for long term gain has to be the mantra here. |

Mixed on this one..... yes he’s adapted his business to now selll food, but selling them for a penny does just snack of breaking the rules.
If he had adapted and charging £2-£3 a meal we wouldn’t even be having this discussion
He has made himself a target now and enforcement officers will be watching him very closely. |

A pub that is charging a proper price for meals will be making a profit, so benefits the business.
This guy cannot be making a profit and will actually be losing money by selling meals at a penny.
I’m all for adapting your business to keep it going through all this, but his method unfortunately will have him under very close scrutiny. Not just COVID marshalls, but I imagine a visit from H&S inspectors won’t be far away as a venue who doesn’t normally serve food |

If he doesn’t have a licence to supply food, which is the unknown and we can only assume he doesn’t if he has never previously sold food, then yes he has broke a rule - not a covid rule, but a general one |

Tier 2.Should not meet in indoor settings unless they are family or part of a support bubble.

Funny ....doesnt mention you can meet friends/ buy a meal but, not consume it just to socialize over a drink... this is why covid is spreading .

Yeah ... this government want all businesses to shut down so they don't have to keep counting all that horrible tax money that keeps coming in ..... if everywhere shuts down and no tax money coming in, they can then sack all the HMRC workers too and save even more money .... great thinking love. |

Mecca Bingo clubs are open in our area.
As long as you are a member you can attend.
As long as you only sit one person to a table you are not breaking any restrictions.
You can order food, drinks and chat to whoever you wish.
I didn't decide that was allowed, and I haven't broken any rules! |

Sounds a fantastic offer. A "substantial" meal for 1p. I think I'll start going everyday! As a driver's, I won't be able to drink so a nice glass of water for me. Got a feeling, this is one of the worst business ideas, I've heard of. If this is advertised, I'm sure he will be packed out. Perhaps he might take £20 or £30 a night! As long as he pays his staff their full wages etc, I can't see a problem. |

The story broke yesterday and from what it states he was contacted by an environmental individual to point out the covid rules. The licensing sector, I believe, is a separate team and I’m sure they will be double checking a few venues to ensure they have all the correct paperwork and H&S clearance.
I’m sure this isn’t the last time we will see stories like this |

I guess if he can make a few quid on the beer sales by allowing people to drink all day/night ... it will cover his losses on the food.. nobody can eat that much anyway if they are concentrating their efforts on getting a few pints down... if he covers costs and wages and saves his business then fair play to him... too many people who are sat working from home on full pay or in safe jobs are very quick to judge others doing what they can to survive all this shit... |

With equal respect, there will be no pubs or restaurants left at this rate if the scaremongering amongst us have their way. Along with every other sector of hospitality.... |

As I understand it he was giving people a maximum of 2-hours to eat (as much as they like) to not have people not get too tipsy.
Good luck to him if he is keeping people safe, and to the rules and diversifying in a way that keeps his business open during these hard times |

Nobody here would agree to the flouting of rules and laws that was definitely done to likely increase infection levels. Following the rules for restaurants is promoted as safe enough, hence all the restaurants around me that are operating legally. The government has had the expert input and then imposed the rules.

You realise that restrictions will.be in place until it stops spreading so fast ?

If decent support was offered to businesses in Tier 3, they wouldn't have to resort to such measures. The 40 million hospitality grant is a load of shit! The caveats are ridiculous and it excludes a lot of businesses, including ours. But then again, the adult industry and night clubs are not important, neither are their employees, their suppliers or contractors it seems |

“Desperate times” So let’s look at this another way.
Joe, Mary, Syd, Stan & Ethel just happen to be pretty skint as pensioners so they haven’t been going out much due to Covid & spent the last days before pension day eating beans on toast. They see this 1p meal deal, think 1/2pint & a proper meal will be cheaper than actually cooking beans on toast & heating their homes, the bus ride is free so if they trot to mix with everyone else.
Mary & Syd get Covid & die whether from the pub, the bus or just coming into contact with someone they wouldn’t have W route, the others don’t but they will be back as the food was great & socialising was a nice change so they may or may not get it later.
But the business is OK so it’s all good ??

Yep, if the arseholes cheat the system then close them all for 6 months. Places dont spread Covid, people do, unfortunately people don't learn so we must close the places simples |

The biggest is that the funding is only available to businesses who re-opened after lockdown for 3 months and then closed again. Night clubs and most swingers clubs have never re-opened, but we are not eligible for the grant |

Even without this guys idea, can anyone explain why a pub serving food is safer than one that does not.
Assuming the rule of 6, social distancing, table service, masks unless sat down etc are in place in both.

I’m appalled that you’re appalled!
How is he flouting rules if he’s serving a ‘substantial meal’ with drinks - exactly as per the rules?
Do you think covid gives a shit how much people pay for their food - and only attacks those who buy cheap food?
The guy is trying to stay in business. If I went I’d insist on paying a fairer price for the food as it’s a living hell trying to keep any kind of hospitality business going right now.
As long as he, his staff and customers follow the hygiene, mask and social distance recommendations then it makes no difference how much he charges for food!

I imagine the idea is that it means, firstly, that you’ll spend longer in one place as you’re eating - and it will stop people going to multiple pubs/bars in a short space of time and therefore limit the risk of spreading covid. |

This. And the guy is also accepting "pay what you feel" voluntary additional over the 1p minimum. I've been to this pub and it's already well designed for table service of a socially distant manner, actually. Last time I went, I drove a mobility scooter round the place quite easily, with no crashing and the ability to turn without reversing. It's a spacious place, very safe if people follow the mask and hand washing regime. |

No different to anywhere else that is open & doing the same. The only folk forcing anyone out of business is the govt with these forced closures, contradictory advice & lack of real financial help to the places that have had to close & their staff. |

I think its great...he s saving his business by thinking outside the box as someone already said. No one knows his situation with finances etc so why should he be judged and if the enforcers have visited without any action then he s obviously within the law...better than facing financial ruin as many self employed will. Improvise, overcome, adapt. Good luck to him...he s supporting the people and his staff and is taking all action required for social distancing etc |

To a point I agree but can see why some people are doing so and in this case totally can emphasise with what the guy is trying to do given down the road there will be others open also serving food..
Also there has been inconsistent messages throughout and lax rules when clarity and laws to enable the police etc to enforce things properly..
It's almost half arsed, Boris at the start made a comment about the rights of free born men or some thing similar in relation to closing pubs etc and it's been wishy washy, inconsistent, confusing and open to abuse since when it should really have not been.. |

yes because dont forget, if you sell food, covid says, oh we cant go in there and infect people, as they are eating, but when they see a pub with drinkers in, happy days lads we can infect them all.
causing mass unemployment isnt going to make this go away, just cause huge problems of debt for future generations.
the harsh reality is, yes some will die, i knew on who has, and its very sad, but thats life, we could all die anyday off loads of things, but we carry on and try to make the best of life, lock down doesnt seem to be working, cases have only gone up since lockdown because we were not testing properly then, and still arent properly, but i know for sure that deaths from other causes and depression related suicides have rocketed, and we will face the aftermath trying to feed and house a huge unemployed part of the population, who lets not forget pay very little tax compaired to people who work, and we are more in debt than since the 2nd world war, it may even be worse, i dont know the figures.
eitherway ruining the ecomamy is not the answer. imagine the outcry when hospitals have to close because we cant afford them??????? |

the difference is wetherspoons were already within the guidelines with their business model
they havent adapted in what is clearly a loss making way just to bend themself into a rule that was clearly written with the intention of them being closed
in some industries there is what is known as “rules based approach” where rather than work to the letter of the law you are expected to work to the spirit of the rule ... it stops people looking for tiny loopholes to get away with shady behaviour... clearly hospitality isnt one of them |

by the way i should add that i am not some high horse goody 2 shoes hibernating alone at the moment... for example -
i ripped the arse right out of eat out to help out when it was on
in glasgow we are not allowed friends / family in our homes and pubs and restaurants have closed so ive recently become a great fan of meeting friends 1 on 1 for brunch (when normally i wouldn't surface til after lunch at weekends and it would be groups of friends and pub meetings)
i am going out and i am meeting people albeit within the reduced guidelines ... i just think there is a difference between adapting your social life to fit the rules, and bending the rules to fit your social life ( ie ordering food you wont eat just so you can get a swally) |

34% of employees have been asked to defraud the furlough system by their companies by being asked to return to work while being furloughed.
HM Revenue & Customs has estimated that between 5 and 10 per cent of £39 billion in payments made under the Treasury’s job retention scheme are likely to have been claimed fraudulently.
That's up to nearly 4 billion. |

"Its the bending of the rules thats keeping this virus going.
Nothing to be proud of.
Dear oh dear .... heading for longer lockdowns if this catches on
No different to what several of my friends and I were doing last week - ordering a meal each that we left on the next table untouched in order that we could enjoy a drink or 2.
If any local business is open, I will support them.
Well that’s just a stupid waste of food! Why not donate the cost to a charity that’s support the homeless or children? Wow ...
because it had nothing to do with helping the economy and everything to do with finding the loophole that allowed them to sit and have a few drinks with mates
#rant
Yes very deserving of a large fine. Some people taking the piss hurts us all and will wreck businesses just because it's alright to meet your mates for a beer .... totally agree - everyone follow the rules and we might get out this mess quicker
A rather simplistic argument "
Simplistic is to be expected from them. It’s what they do. |

"Ive been wondering, how can he make any form of profit form selling the meal at 1p.Must sell one hell of a lot of drinks to break even. But good luck to him.
I've wondered that too.
Guessing you don’t know many Prestoners then? "
I guess the beer and Lambrini they consume will make it worthwhile. |

This could be great for the homeless, where else could they get a meal so cheap"
As I said not so jokingly in my earlier post they won’t be able to move for pensioners. All you need is one copper outside to ensure he turns no one away & he’ll be broke in a week.

Just for clarity, people meeting up for a few drinks may or may not be illegal in that area, meeting up with a few friends for drinks under the guise of having a meal isnt in the spirit of the guidelines and possibly illegal.
Don't see what could be more simple. |

What I meant was..the OP said dont break the rules and this will be over.
But if the rules dont work..that wont be the case. |

The fact is - covid cases didn’t rise exponentially when they re-opened either retail or the hospitality industry - they rose when they re-opened schools/education.
My daughter is in year 11 and doing her GCSE’s next summer - so not for a moment am I suggesting they abandon/shut down education. What I’m saying is that ‘punishing’ the hospitality industry to offset the huge rise in cases caused by re-opening education will have minimal effect however draconian the rules are! |

As an interesting aside, there is a Guardian report about London restaurants using a loophole in the rule of 6 by saying if it's a business meal, then groups of 30 can meet up without household restrictions applying as long as some form of business is discussed. |

Can't see these guidelines/lockdowns catching on in London anyway, that would be such an inconvenience to the govt & imagine the uproar when they don't follow their own guidance |

Why do so many people fail to see this??
It's not opinion its backed up by the science and the governments own data from track and trace

"34% of employees have been asked to defraud the furlough system by their companies by being asked to return to work while being furloughed.
HM Revenue & Customs has estimated that between 5 and 10 per cent of £39 billion in payments made under the Treasury’s job retention scheme are likely to have been claimed fraudulently.
That's up to nearly 4 billion.
There will be a few vacancies in HMRC's when all this is over "
I was on the JRS and SEISS projects at HMRC. Normally, systems of that scale would take 8-12 MONTHS to design, implement and Test.
23 days for JRS. 44 days for SEISS.
Testing was cut to bare minimum, but I can assure you that all applications were audited and archived. They have subsequently written and tested all the systems required to pick out fraudulent claims.. whether they can trace the applicants when they do start issuing repayment msndates remains to be seen.
There was a lot of pressure to “get something out of the door” .. the team spent 14/15 hours a day for 3-5 weeks solid to get the schemes in place. Corners were cut, but would you sooner have something that can support the majority, or wait till a bulletproof And fully tested system was in place??
I suspect its the sane for track and trace. These things dont just get created!!

I think you misunderstood what I meant.
I meant because there has been such a push to get things out the door..once this is over there will be a huge drive to investigate those fraudulent claims.
Therefore more jobs. |
