I think you missed my point, how can we not deserve something that only exists because we created it?.
It's like saying we don't deserve Ferraris or wind turbines |

We didn't, but years of breeding have given us a dog for almost every job.
Sniffer, guard, traction unit, swimmer, rodent killer, food disposal unit, scapegoat, surrogate eyes/ears, toy chaser, animal marshal and even stage performer.
No other animal comes close, not even horses or cats, when it come to variety and versatility.
Did you know that sniffer bees can sniff out explosives? Could Covid be next?

Yes I understand the ethos of breeding for "jobs" I breed dogs myself. Although not for specialist talents.
I was referring to the poster who said ... how can we not deserve something that only exists because we created it?.
We did not create dogs...they are not wind turbines or ferarris

Agreed. An incredible thing if it can be done. At a distance.
The last thing you want is PC Rover sniffing a carriers hands, then bounding over to you with a nose tip full of virus for a sniff on you.
The law of unintended consequences needs a close eye (or nose) on this one.
I'm not an animal-keeper myself. I don't like seeing animals in captivity. Domestication for a purpose I can just about rationalise (guardian animal, work animal, etc), but domestication for our own personal pleasure and gratification I cannot comprehend.
My parents had dogs as a kid.
I used to think when looking at them "You're prisoners, really aren't you ? We've bred you in an environment of our choosing and now you depend on us, because we're taken away your agency, haven't we ? If I don't get that can of Woofy-Boy out the cupboard, open it, and put it in your bowl, you're not going to do so well are you ? What does that make me ? Why aren't you out there, hunting and doing what you want ? Oh yes, I remember. You're a predator. (Seriously, a goofball Pekinese is not an Apex Predator. It's a flipping eye-popping doofus ball of dopeyness).
Ok, so your other cousins are predators. they are the ones that will eat me if left to their wild side. Oh well. Here's your Woofy-Boy. And Mr. Squeaky. Go play or something"
And I'd walk away, wondering who was the real animal. The real monster. The real apex predator.
And I knew the answer.

I think that the point he was making is that there were no wild equivalent to our domestic dogs. All species of dog have originated from various wolves, although this was a very long time ago (upto 40,000 years), all of the various breeds only exist because the have been created through years of selective breeding. Really, the same is true of all the animals that people use be it pets, or farm animals.
On the other hand though, the relationship between peoples and their pets has evolved to become really important in many lives.

They weren't modern dogs they were now extinct grey wolves, every modern dog in existence today with maybe the exception of a dingo is completely man-made, distinctly breed by man for thousands of years, it's like saying wild fresian cows roamed. |

It's completely true.

At the time, I was not cognisant that my "upbringing" was a bit different.
I grew up in the country, far from the madding crowd.
My formative years were nurtured mostly by myself, perhaps from the age of 10 onwards ; both parents worked strange hours, so I had to learn to look after and amuse myself.
School was an annoyance, almost an impertinence, but it did afford me a place to learn things which I found interesting, namely English Literature and Computing. I paid lip service to the other subjects. Did the minimal required to be honest. Enough to gain average grades.
I refused to do Biology on the grounds that there was absolutely no reason for me to dissect a dead frog to learn about its anatomy when the Biology textbook I had contained said information. So a frog had been killed for my own benefit. I could not reconcile that internally.
I also informed them I would not study Physics or Art, as these subjects did not interest me and I wanted to concentrate using that class time instead on self-study for English and Computing on my own in the library. I knew Computing would be my career from the age of 12.
Contrary to belief, I wasn't precocious, nor rude, arrogant or insolent. Just calm, polite, and firm. I'd read enough dystopian novels by that age to realise that you don't fight the system from outside, you bend and shape it from within. They kindly yielded and I kindly thanked them for their grace. Everyone was happy and the teachers could focus on the loud, noisy and disruptive kids.
So yes, you are right. I was quite "deep" as a child, yet I didn't feel it or know it. I feel the same now as I did then.
Pensive. Reflective. Curious.
Thank you for a trip down memory lane.

Helsinki airport has had them for a while and other countries, including the UK, has some dogs in training.
It's a very good approach and can reduce infections, including those pre-symptomatix and asymptomatic, plus immediate results. Lower costs potentially too. |
