From what I heard from people who were there, the rally was peaceful, people were listening to the speakers and the police got heavy handed. |

If you watched the peaceful protest, all of whom are protesting for the freedoms you don't know you are going to lose. you would have seen the police charging peaceful protestors and even wielding batons against peaceful human beings, The police seemed to single people out for no apparent reason and arrest them, I would assume to try and antagonise the crowd, so they could charge in, Looks like the police failed this time. Part two is next Saturday 26 September Midday at Trafalger Square, if any one is interested in standing up for their freedom. |

The police were heavy handed and were using bully tactics in the hope to scare people off from turning up next Saturday... It was a totally peaceful event and the police were provoking and trying to disrupt... Dog units, cops on horses and cops in full riot gear.. Absolute joke. |

Well seeing as we are told its totally safe to go to work, the pub, the football, or pretty much anywhere else that raises tax money.....

It is not safe for us to gather in group of more than 6 in our own homes and gardens......

But we did that and it DIDN'T go away. They said stay at home, and everybody did. The level of compliance surprised even the government but IT DIDN'T WORK.
What did happen was a huge upswing in treatable illness going untreated, a massive decline in mental health and a catastrophic level of destruction within the economy.
Now, despite all that they want us to do it again. NO.
Obeying the law is one thing but when that law flies in the face of our basic freedoms for no good reason it's a bad law and bad laws shouldn't be obeyed.
And before anyone starts with the 'the protests could spread covid' nonsense go take a look around. Covid's here. It's spreading anyway. It's spreading in houses, in shops, in offices, on buses on trains... it doesn't need protests to spread, but WE need protests to keep this government from becoming a dictatorship. |

My thoughts and observations
Crowds outside although certainly a conduit for the virus actually are not historically shown to spread exponentially
My observation
Touch I'd suggest is an effect conduit at least 50 percent responsibility for this virus transmission
Before finger pointing at outside groups I'd suggest people concentrating very hard on their own touch hygiene
This week
Over 200 people crossed my work premises
All thought themselves bomb proof with their mask
97 percent touched more than 5 surfaced or door handles then touched their phone wallet mask and face
I observe diabolical hand to object transmission pathways daily in every environment I venture
Until people stop entirely touching anything another has touched this will continue
And that is neither plausible or possible for any degree of normality
It is not possible for all establishments and all their patrons to clean every surface and every hand after touching
Personally my only practical solution
Carefully write a leaflet for all vulnerable people on how they MUST act ie impeccable hand to mouth hygiene and social distancing a step by step guide on how they MUST practice impeccable mask discipline currently the advice is all word of mouth or a news soundbite the vulnerable are either just not going out or do not really have a clue how to effectively protect themselves
I'd suggest we stop shouting at people not complying with possibly relatively ineffective and contradictory rules and work to help our vulnerable evade all contact with potential carriers or surfaces or air but still have their liberties

Thus far there's been at theses demo's, the extreme far right, the 5 g conspiracy cranks and the anti vaxers..
And as with any demo rent a mob sneak in to kick off and trash things..
Some of them might benefit from a tap on the head..
Btw there were according to Reuters as many police injured as protestors..
So the picture being painted by some of theses so called freedom campaigners heroically fighting for the nation against an oppressive state is somewhat bollocks.. |

The problem with a plan is if they have to change it with another out brake we will still call them in competent.
The first lock down was to late in my opinion but if it had bean earlier and there had been hardly any deaths we would have all moaned more about it. and then a second lookdown no one would have paid any attention at all.... |

The vulnerable people who so many on here just want to throw under a bus, the healthy people that will get unlucky and suffer lifelong damage even though they won't die, the young people who have a health condition they don't know about and will suffer. Much as we clearly don't agree, I have no desire to see you go out of business, however there is absolutely no scenario where you and other business owners won't be affected. Okay- that is a kind answer and I appreciate that. I am also concerned about the vulnerable, who we would all agree are the elderly, those with co-morbidities and other health issues - yes?
What about those left vulnerable and damaged by the reaction to the COVID-19 response by this government though? Thats what I’m getting at with my question. You (not you specifically-
I mean as a group) call people like me selfish, say I don’t think of other people- but I feel like people get so caught about the bug that they forget about worrying about the financial, mental and physical health of everyone else.

I thought so at the beginning- bitter a pill as it was to swallow. Now- no.
What has changed?
Numbers of people in hospital. Numbers of deaths. Restrictions on civil liberties reaching far beyond anything we have seen for an extremely long time, in this country, with no parliamentary scrutiny. Stuff like that!!!

Yes I do, and that is why I said I supported the measures at the beginning. July 4th was the turning point for me... “super Saturday”... it was great- the feeling of optimism was palpable. Then came 24th July with the masks and every little hope this country about recovery and a return to normality was crushed. Ever since then we have had rules and restrictions and fines and sharp little beaks poking into every corner of our daily lives.

I actually agree that we can't just focus on Covid, however it is now intrinsically linked with business. Public health is driving business decisions with the business being placed in second place. The longer this goes on, the more we will understand the virus and this will allow more things to be done that may currently be classed as to risky, however it may also reveal things we currently think of as low risk to be bad. Unfortunately there are no quick answers and the waters are also being muddied by the rafts of false advice and rumors about Covid. However there is also a balance to be struck with risk of vast unemployment. It is this balancing act that things like masks are a part of, even if it only helps a tiny amount, that tiny amount translates into a little more businesses can open and do. Ironically also providing a source of revenue for other businesses by making them. Mine come very well made from a family run tailors in Lancashire who switched to them when they couldn't make bespoke suits, they are still in business now and I am glad that in a tiny way, my purchase helped that. We also need to get the rates under control to win the confidence of other countries so that foreign travel can resume more effectively further bringing in revenue and protecting jobs. |

You’re only focusing on one aspect of all of this. You think the only thing that matters is public health. Public health is one element in a complex decision which involves weighing up health considerations against social, economic and educational factors.
More-so, when 99% of the population aren’t going to die from the virus. We now know six months on the death rate is similar to flu. We didn’t lock down the country when we had a severe flu outbreak in January 2017 when tens of thousands died. |

Because it buys time, research takes time and research is what leads us to find better treatments and to understand better what does and doesn't work. If you take the brakes off and allow it to run rampant, you ultimately end up with more sick and dead than you can possibly cope with, the healthcare system then buckles and as other people have referred to, the death rate from everything else rockets too further compounding the issue. It is absolutely a balancing act and there is no guarantee we are getting it right, however there is somewhat of a general consensus in approach across the globe, so whatever you think of our government, if they are mirroring other governments that's about as good an answer as is available anywhere in the world right now as those approaches have been arrived at by the scientific community globally not just in the UK. There is always going to be variation to allow for local circumstances (even in the UK there is with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). But the world is trying to figure it out as fast as it can, it's just never going to be as fast as people want. |

Along with your rights come responsibilities. Anybody with the tiniest of compassion for a society trying to stop the spread of a virus as we come into winter would be able to see that.
For the conspiracy theorists, you seem to pick and choose your conspiracies to suit your argument. Don't wear a mask because you don't want to confirm because it's a govt plan to control you. Yet carry and use a mobile phone for convenience from which the provider knows where you are at any time? Or use Google because it is convenient while at the same time gathering and listening to every breath you take. I asked the question twice - who pays for the sick and the elderly? Not had an answer yet, so can only assume there isn’t one forthcoming.
As for spurious accusations, how about selfish, bratty, idiot, wanker, no moral compass, need a kick up the arse and people feeling sorry for my kids. As for people who are opposed to my opinion, Im perfectly happy to adjust my thinking when challenged. Take a look at the hunting thread I started - I spoke to people and gained a greater understanding. Its a good example of where Im happy to engage in debate, accept information and learn that, although I am still no hunting fun, my argument was wrong footed.

Spurious accusations was more aimed at the poster who said people are sitting on their arses making up crap to scare people to which you agreed..
I asked the question twice - who pays for the sick and the elderly? Not had an answer yet, so can only assume there isn’t one forthcoming.
As for spurious accusations, how about selfish, bratty, idiot, wanker, no moral compass, need a kick up the arse and people feeling sorry for my kids. That’s just the insults thrown at me (or people who have posited the same opinions as me) that I can think of off the top of my head. I think those are pretty “spurious“ accusations too. Although I’m not sure that the word “spurious” is correct in either of our arguments tbh!! "

Our greatest liberty is the respect for human life.
Those on this forum and site who feel we are entering a police state - give your heads a wobble.
Covid exists.
It is an existential threat to our way of life, our actual lives and the futures of our children.
The Govt is trying (and making mistakes) to do its duty to protect citizens. That is why govt exists. You voted to ensure this happens.
Curfews, masks, closures, restrictions on gathering are part of an effort to stop the transmission of a virus that will kill.
As soon as the need for the regulations passes they will be removed. The primary legislation is temporary (due for renewal in Oct). Previous uses of temporary emergency powers were all lifted when the need passed, most notably WW2 (we don’t see the compulsory carrying of gas masks anymore...)
Grow up and accept your social responsibility to others - value their life as much as you presumably value yours - wear a mask. Simple.

Given a medical degree, 30 years practice and specialism in related fields I think I know what the science is.
The existential threat I describe is from a virus that is capable of rates of transmission that exceed SARS. In addition, the mortality rate is not understood or clear - but if we overlay the rate we saw in feb-June then we can reliably estimate 150k-800k deaths during the two year course of a pandemic. Do not believe everything you read. Whilst therapeutics have improved, the end game is that for those with even fairly monies chronic illnesses this virus is a killer.
Wrap a few bodies, break the news to a few relatives, make the choice between patient a or b and you will understand the reality of what is coming and what happened at the start of the year. Do not deny the evidence that I saw with my own eyes, or the reality of the interventions that failed.

The first lockdown didn't work because people decided to crowd the beaches at Durdle Dor and Bournemouth etc with no thought of social distance, people decided the virus doesn't exist so held raves and parties and then there were some riots as well. The virus does exist and my lungs are still f**ked up 6 months later |

You surely know that a repeat of previous death rates is unlikely so why use numbers intended to scare people?
You'll also note I clearly stated the current case fatality rate - I'm very well aware you can't determine the actual mortality rate till after the emergent phase of the illness has passed. Even the rate of 2 - 3 % I used is higher than many current estimates which put it at around 1 - 2 %. Hardly the 'existential threat' you claim it is.
I most certainly don't believe everything I read, in fact I'm very selective especially since I'm making decisions affecting my own health & the health of my family based it. I suspect we both read many of the same publications.
Nor would I ever (and have never) attempted to deny evidence or downplay the hardships & grief covid has caused. As far as I'm aware there were no instances in the uk where doctors had to chose between patients, I know this happened overseas but I've seen no reports of it here. If you have then I fully accept that but it's not something that's been reported.
The body of evidence strongly indicates covid is a significant risk for a small minority of the overall population. Lockdowns are a risk for the entire population. There is no guarantee of a vaccine so we're faced with an unpalatable choice. We've chosen different sides.
We do differ in our views. That doesn't mean I don't respect and understand yours, I do however disagree with it.
The control measures are disproportionate to the threat posed by the virus. Whether the are disproportionate in relation to the availabiltiy of care is a completely different debate. |
