If you want to watch the virus connection, ffw half hour. You'll just be missing the facts - present predictions of losing one million species of flora and fauna (12.5%). Of which are vital for food chains.

Human pollution, consumption, over-population and habitat destruction is now coming back to bite us in the arse.

The reckon polar bears could be extinct in the world by as little as 2030.

I liked how one expert suggested we could use the consequences of the pandemic to start correcting, not only the consequences but the causes, the work required is labour intensive.

My guess is that we will, as a race, do little more to stop our causes of extinction of other species, as it does not fit our greedy plans for immediate financial and power gains. Tragic. We have a perfect storm of powerful leaders in the USA, Brazil, Russia, the UK and elsewhere who will diminish cooperation towards the goals that we should have

Search 'The truth about polar bears'. Its a classic article where they admit that in 50 years the population has not declined and if anything has increased. Of course they then say it could all go horribly wrong soon but no doubt there were articles tens years ago saying the same thing.

Watched it at the time. Disturbing stuff. The phrase that kept coming up was (roughly), "These are no longer projections, it's happening now."

If - and it's a big if - humanity can get its head out of its arse and stop ignoring reality, it might make it.

Right now, it seems highly unlikely. Maybe our children and grandchildren can undo the damage - but it's a huge job.

The most worrying part was about the loss of plant species. If you want an inkling of what could happen if our crops die off due to a disease, read The Death Of Grass (1956) by John Christopher.

Back in the 70s they said the planet couldn't feed 4 billion and there would be famine with 100s of millions dying. We are currently overfeeding 7 billion people. This is just the continuing 'Chicken Little' narrative.

"How the oil industry made us doubt climate change

As climate change becomes a focus of the US election, energy companies stand accused of trying to downplay their contribution to global warming. In June, Minnesota's Attorney General sued ExxonMobil, among others, for launching a "campaign of deception" which deliberately tried to undermine the science supporting global warming. So what's behind these claims? And what links them to how the tobacco industry tried to dismiss the harms of smoking decades earlier?"

From the UN....

"Each day, 25,000 people, including more than 10,000 children, die from hunger and related causes. Some 854 million people worldwide are estimated to be undernourished, and high food prices may drive another 100 million into poverty and hunger"

In Western society we can purchase food cheaply - this cheap food can abate hunger BUT has other consequences - malnutrition/obesity.

For wealthy people the here and now matters (not next week, not even tomorrow). They put profit as a high priority. Change involves huge initial investments, which means non-existent profits in the short term. We cannot expect capitalists to invest but can we campaign govts to?

All the problems in this world are human initiated and are returning to bite us in the arse: overpopulation, consumption, pollution, climate change, extinction of flora and fauna, encroaching on habitat that changes entire eco systems with scientists predicting 5 new diseases yearly. We can see this with epidemics and pandemics in the earth's recent history.

We are destroying the planet and in turn, ourselves. It's not even mother nature fighting back - it's our destruction of mother nature's balance.

We're just one of millions and millions of species,99.9% of which have gone extinct.

Death is very much part of life, if you examine the entirety of human existence it's one ring on a tree ring consisting of 4 billion rings, dinosaurs existed for a few million of those 4 billion, they never really did anything with their time though.

The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long and we've burnt ever so brightly for the duration.

People die of hunger because they cannot afford to buy food, not because there is not enough of it.

In fact there is so much food produced that we choose to burn large amounts of it as bio diesel rather than feeding it to the hungry. This also has the effect of raising food prices.

I don't get all this negativity. Humans have been fighting against a cruel planet for thousands of years. In the beginning we lived outdoors in the parts of the planet that could support human live without any shelter or tools. A cold winter would kill you. A dry summer would kill you. A scratch could kill you. We faced pandemics with no medicines, no health care whatsoever.

Now we live anywhere on the planet that we choose to. We have year round food and shelter. Heating, air-conditioning, transport, communication. We ally work 40 hours a week to provide luxuries even our grandparents couldn't have dreamt of.

According to the World Bank, Over the last 25 years, more than a billion people have lifted themselves out of extreme poverty, and the global poverty rate is now lower than it has ever been in recorded history. That's an incredible achievement and shows the world is getting better not worse.

First they were being overfed, now they are dying of hunger

If you are interested in truth then there isva lot of information on how first world diets have changed from high fat low ca4b diets to high carb low fat diets. This because it is easier to mass produce corn and maize, and feed our livestock on corn rather than grass. The obesity curve took off at exactly the same time as our diets did, it's not how much we eat, it's what we eat.

What people should have said was that we couldn't AFFORD to feed 7.7 billion people.

To feed our population today we need to destroy huge tracts of the Amazon rainforest (which provides 80% of our oxygen) and go back to hunting wales etc. 90 of large fish were extinct in 2010 already.

It's not negativity. It's reality. This is what happens when people seek the truth coming from scientists that WEREN'T funded by the same industrialists who are at the root of the problem.

Yes you are fine now. Your feet are dry and you can breathe. But entire islands are needing to be evacuated because of rising sea levels. Sorry, which islands are being evacuated? How is your life going downhill due to man's effect on the world? Do you need to worry about how many polar bears there are, how the penguins are doing in the Antarctic?

The biggest cause of COPD is smoking so it's a self inflicted injury. We will all be old eventually and you will have a much better old age now than 50 years ago, unless of course, you stuffed your face and sat on the couch, neglecting to look after your health.

According to the World Bank, Over the last 25 years, more than a billion people have lifted themselves out of extreme poverty, and the global poverty rate is now lower than it has ever been in recorded history. That's an incredible achievement and shows the world is getting better not worse.

I bet you they have a "negative" view of Anthropological Climate Change. The rise of people dying from COPD is exponential. One day we will all be old. Then it will be OUR problem.

"

What would be really great is if we could have two planets to live on. One for the people who don't give a shit about things except what effects themselves directly and one for people who understand that we are all dependent on the same planet that sustains us.

And yes I used to surf in areas where this is a lot of sea life. I've had the privilege of being so close to whales I could feel the vibration through the water when they slapped their tails. I've had a wild dolphin jump over my sufboard. Experiences that I would love my children and grandchildren to experience too. To have this taken away so that rich industrialists can have more money is not the world I hope for.

Strange that with almost two million less smokers in the UK in 2019 vs 2011 that the pharmaceutical companies can't make enough enhalers because the market has grown so fast.

"For wealthy people the here and now matters (not next week, not even tomorrow).

You accept the huge changes humans have placed on the planet causing global heating, I assume. This heating is causing substantial increases to/from greenhouse gases, melting sea ice, destruction of habitats needed by wildlife and species disruptive and extinction threats.

Much of this is the pursuit of wealth without suitable environmental controls and further avoidable damages that will make the planet less habitable by us and other species in many areas.

The heating and cooling systems of the planet are being jeopardised, for our selfish pursuits. One could almost be forgiven for thinking that there were no alternatives known to us.

There is an interesting documentary on Netflix called Fat Fiction. It documents how our perceptions of what constitutes a healthy diet has changed. It also shows how this change in perception has caused obesity. The fact is that if we went back to those old diets the earth just couldn't sustain it.

If Japan can't feed it's people without hunting whales, how will it feed it's people when whales are extinct?

The most worrying part was about the loss of plant species. If you want an inkling of what could happen if our crops die off due to a disease, read The Death Of Grass (1956) by John Christopher.

Read that book, very thought provoking given how much die back there has been in plant/animal life these past decades.

We are currently overfeeding 7 billion people."

No, we aren't. Fat Americans and Europeans do not 7 billion people make.

"Or search 'The Myth That the Polar Bear Population Is Declining'

Yep that sounds a credible source

Let me guess

. They deny climate change?

I guess you didn't read it then.

I googled the foundation for ecomonoc change.

That was enough.

Not much of an argument "

Well when you have the vast majority of scientists on 1 side of the fence and right wing think tanks on the other..I'm not sure if there is any need for an argument to be made.

Back in the 70s they said the planet couldn't feed 4 billion and there would be famine with 100s of millions dying. We are currently overfeeding 7 billion people. This is just the continuing 'Chicken Little' narrative.

Then why are people going hungry in 1 of the richest countries on the planet?

From the UN....

"Each day, 25,000 people, including more than 10,000 children, die from hunger and related causes. Some 854 million people worldwide are estimated to be undernourished, and high food prices may drive another 100 million into poverty and hunger"

People die of hunger because they cannot afford to buy food, not because there is not enough of it.

In fact there is so much food produced that we choose to burn large amounts of it as bio diesel rather than feeding it to the hungry. This also has the effect of raising food prices."

We are currently over feeding?

Check the relevant tidal gauge data, most of the islands have remained stable over the last 60 years. It's an Atoll of 5000 people scratching a living on a rock in the Pacific. They're looking for any money they can get their hands on and would jump on any passing bandwagon.

No I don't care about the migration figure guesses.

1. I will probably be dead.

2. It's a guess.

3. 250 million people don't live in the country they were born in, migration is nothing new.

Well if you are dead we may as well just blow up the planet. What's the point of the earth existing if you aren't alive?

As I said on another thread, people aren't worried about a threatening situation until it affects them immediately and in person.

According to scientists, if the Thwaites Glacier collapses it will cause a 65cm rise in sea level and have a knock on effect of 2 to 3 meters in sea level.

Since there is a cavern almost the size of Manhattan in place of what is supposed to be holding it up... who knows when this will be?

A better movie is "Contagion" because it sources material and advisors from the CDC themselves on how an outbreak would likely play out in a modern day society if we were to assume a high level morbidity rate.

The parallels are obvious and the amount they got right in the film just goes to show how little the government is willing to take seriously about this how affair.

Rather taking a more "let's get back to business as soon as possible" attitude as if this is just something to brush under the rug for someone else to deal with.

After all the Facts can't come after the Extinction there just simply wouldn't be anyone to establish them.

The people who worry about polar bear and penguin numbers obviously have too little else to worry about. Life is so good they have to look half way around the world for a problem. Ask someone living in Syria or in a corrugated iron roofed shack in Africa cooking on an open fire, about whether they would like to donate to WWF to adopt a polar bear and see what answer you get.

We are destroying the planet and in turn, ourselves. It's not even mother nature fighting back - it's our destruction of mother nature's balance.

I bet you they have a "negative" view of Anthropological Climate Change. The rise of people dying from COPD is exponential. One day we will all be old. Then it will be OUR problem.

According to scientists the Gulf Stream has started to slow. If it stops we can expect weather patterns closer that of Canada. "

All of the finely balanced natural global systems are likely to be jeopardised by what we are doing. I think the UK is at a similar point to Labradour in Canada, so our local climate would be very different, without the warming gulf stream. As the Arctic warms, which has been happening disproportionately more than most of the world, it could be part of the issue, weakening the gulf stream pushing warm water north, as colder water used to then course south, ss part of the system.

"For wealthy people the here and now matters (not next week, not even tomorrow). They put profit as a high priority. Change involves huge initial investments, which means non-existent profits in the short term. We cannot expect capitalists to invest but can we campaign govts to?

My understanding of the Gulf Stream is that it works like a radiator removing heat from the equator and moving it north and keeping us warm. It seems that the melting ice from the glaciers is causing this to slow and may eventually stop completely. This will have two effects. One that we will experience an average temperature drop and also those regions near the equator will become hotter.

"Might seem a silly question but how can anybody know the 'Facts about Extinction'?

After all the Facts can't come after the Extinction there just simply wouldn't be anyone to establish them.

Don't complicate the nihilists logic, they like to believe the world revolves around them, like as if without humans the world wouldn't exist

The Earth would be a great deal better off without us.

It's not about earth though, it's about humans. Without us earth would just be another one of the billion planets that don't matter. To narrow it down further it's specifically about me and my family.

Of course it is. We can tell by your uninformed responses to many threads in this particular forum . And it's obvious you're not alone in that thought .

I assume you don't plan on having any grandchildren...

The people who worry about polar bear and penguin numbers obviously have too little else to worry about. Life is so good they have to look half way around the world for a problem. Ask someone living in Syria or in a corrugated iron roofed shack in Africa cooking on an open fire, about whether they would like to donate to WWF to adopt a polar bear and see what answer you get."

Oh ffs did you watch the programme? It's not about polar bears and penguins! It does mention a couple of large animals whose species will die with them (a mother and daughter rhino, a group of infertile killer whales off the coast of Britain).

There is a pleasant increase in the quality of life that goes along with ignoring certain people on this forum.

So finely balanced that the planet has coped with ice ages, co2 levels of 8000ppm down to 200ppm, sea-level change of over 300 metres, and yet the planet didn't have thermal runaway in either direction. Since the last glaciation 20,000 years ago, sea level has risen 130 metres to where it is today.
