"3 million tests a day by spring
What you reckon?"
3 million by December i heard. Mind you they didn't say which year i am all for being optimistic but this is ridiculous. How this plan has got this far the mind boggles. |

Based on the track record of the world beating BS that's been churned out, it's probably unlikely.
Testing still failing for many. Tracing hasn't started to be effective yet. Track and trace app still not here, since June
£100 billion cost - which is probably an underestimate, as the capabilities don't exist yet. We'd get better results from a much tinier amount, by paying people full wage levels to stay in quarantine and not work, when they are identified as needing to isolate and not work.
It's great to have ideas but we need accuracy and honesty from leaderz, not BS etc |

Even if a test was come up with tomorrow they wouldn't be able to manufacture enough to provide 3 million tests a day by December. This sounds like a hair brain cummimgs idea to me. |

Utter bollocks.
This is a government and in particular a prime minister seldom capable of original thought. Hence this needs a childish name, just like Putin's and Trump's.

Yeah I don't quite see how the sum adds up. Has Doctor Evil taken over No.10 ? I make it is they could give us 1.5 million each and still have a bit of change left over. It would be much more popular and we'd all be happy to take our chances against the virus uh ??? |

I have a question: how come a club in Poland that regularly comments on forum can do a Covid test (apparently) and get results within, if I remember correctly, 30min or so, yet the government and the scientific advisors are saying technology like that doesn't exist? Who's bullshitting here? |

It's only available for people in Staffordshire or friends of government ministers. I'm imagining that citizens will be given priority.
Operation cumshot, for Johnson to spaff more public £billions up the wall. |

GDP was £2.21 TRILLION in 2019....that is £2,210,000,000,000.
So 100 billion for moonshot (if it reaches that) equates to 4.5% of 2019s GDP.
Is that good or bad in terms of what we normally spend? |

There is a test developed in the US which gives a result in that timescale. It's called Abbott ID NOW. Google is your friend. |

The abbott test is far from reliable, it misses a lot of positives. I first heard about it when I read they were using to to test anyone that came into contact with Trump. |

Well putting trump in the same sentence its bound to fail...
But let's be honest this is just showing how full of shite this lot are...total cost of running NHS England for last year was around a 130 billion. This is predicted at a 100 billion...come on this just shows them as total bunch of billy bullshittersas it's obvious it's never going to happen. |

£100 billion is nearly the total NHS budget or nearly 3 times the defence budget.
Meanwhile 35,000 cancer patients (remember there are lots of other conditions not getting treatment as well) a year are going to die because they can't get NHS tests and treatments.
It all makes perfect sense.
Don't forget that ultimately someone is going to have to pay and my calculator tells me that is around £6000 for an average family of 4

I must be amongst the ignorant because I had the impression that we had fared worse than most countries. New Zealand 24 deaths! What a bunch of clowns! Australia 788. Germany 9412 deaths despite having a population of 83 million... South Korea, Singapore... Hong Kong...
In fact only USA, Brazil, Mexico and India have had more deaths than we have. |

For all the apparent stupidity it's not actually as far fetched as it sounds.
The key will be in the type of test and the level of accuracy we're willing to accept. To be workable it needs to be a simple to administer test that doesn't require a lab for processing - there is no way on earth we can build lab capacity for that level of testing in a year, never mind in a few months.
Right now there is one possibile candidate - a new antigen test manufactured by LumiraDx. It fits the bill for a workable 'moonshot' test because :-
The test is simple to do, needing no special skill & minimal training.
It doesn't rely on central labs to process the tests.
It produces results quickly (around 12 minutes)
It appears to be reasonably specific and accurate (going by the published information at least)
It does still require a machine to process the result but they are easily portable, making rapid local testing a reality.
It's not too far fetched to imagine that, with sufficient investment, a network of local test stations could be created, allowing people to get tested at will and opening the way to truly 'covid safe' events.
So while Borris is without doubt the biggest buffoon this side of the atlantic there may actually be some merit in the idea itself... |

Given the Scottish govt. has already committed to 500,000 tests and 300 machines I'd say Boris's budget is a bit off....
Also, who's to say the public purse needs to foot the bill for the ongoing testing. I don't really see why the cost of the test can't be included in admission/ticket prices for events - after all, people will pay over £100 for a concert ticket so what's an extra tenner for the covid test...
We're going to have to live with covid so if getting tested is the price of socializing normally we need to start thinking about who should pay. |

If the testing we had now was working as it should be we would be ok.
There is talk of private testing at airports now... but we cannot keep failing on one thing then say we are going to shoot to the moon before we have learnt to walk. It's just another distraction that will not happen. |

That's why it was termed a moonshot. When Kennedy said we would set foot on the moon by the end of the decade, the technology was just a dream. It doesn't mean it can't be done. |

Abbott ID Now: possible. Whether we have the manpower to do it, etc, is another matter. Like others I have little confidence in this government to facilitate this.
The Mina idea of lower sensitivity, cheaper, and more rapid tests is a far better one. Screen more often, as much as once a day, squash outbreaks. If you come back positive, you're grounded for two weeks and get a diagnostic test/ treatment. |

you cannot even purchase or buy an accurate test, never mind getting one for free
and then how long do you wait for the result
once you receive the result do you truly believe it has been tested correctly, administrated correctly, might even be another persons result

Stupid question by why are we determined to reinvent the wheel for every aspect of this fiasco?
Why not buy the app from another country where they have had this working for months? Why do we embark on new untried and untested strategies while we ignore those which have been successfully implemented in other countries? |

It’s absolutely possible if the keep well out it. But chances are Matt Hancock will want to do it using an “app” because he’s a “clever” guy, and it will be a chaotic duck up costing millions like everything else the pair of clowns get involved in
Pretty sure he’s got a mate who writes apps but never delivers.
Stupid question by why are we determined to reinvent the wheel for every aspect of this fiasco?
Why not buy the app from another country where they have had this working for months? Why do we embark on new untried and untested strategies while we ignore those which have been successfully implemented in other countries?"
Do you know we are British old boy...we always do things better then the rest of the world |

I think we need to get off the island more... |

They just like to meddle , give lucrative tax payer funded deals to their mates and families businesses and take credit for innovative solutions so they can sit on boards when fed up of being an MP. Look at how Jeremy hunt made millions with his company selling data to the government that they already owned, it’s normal for them |

"World has gone to shit.
In so many ways.
Tbh I think it’s probably always been shit, we just didn’t know.
This seems like all the brewing troubles coming home to roost. With the mindset of "I'll be alright so fuck you"
Brexit and climate change are going to be so much fun
I'm living in Paris where it is typically a couple of degrees warmer than the uk, if the UK has the forecast two degrees of warming then it can only be good news."
Global heating doesn't work like that, where you can just add 2 degrees to each day's temperature, to get the weather forecast. It may be an average of 2, spread across the year and all localities. In practice, we are predicted to continue to have increasing frequency of extreme weather events, greater drought, flooding due to torrential rain as well as extended periods of extreme weather that persists.
Back to the forum topic. The recent results of the UK have been poor and suggest that we'd waste £100 billion, much spaffed up the wall, as Johnson terms it.
Priority should be getting what we have now to work right. Any failures now will show their impact in the future, thus increasing the levels of the problem as well as the cost. Each week that it continues to fail will accrue greater damage to the country. This should be our priority. |

We have a big problem it’s called bigism and statism is does t work , NHS is a recent example. There’s lots of research on this. The only way to solve big complex problems is to break them down and use free market economics and they tend to solve themselves without too much meddling |

If you truly want to solve the testing problem, take the government out of it.
Approve the rapid tests for use. Provide an incentive to get tested (ie. required for admission to certain types of high risk events/locations) and watch as the private sector find cost effective ways to do what HMG cannot.
Want yo go to the football or a nightclub? Go get a test in the morning. Hell, if tests took 12 minutes to give results I can see a LOT of employers using them to reopen offices... |

"Is it all to deflect from the Brexit failure ?
Not just that failure "
Johnathan Powell were giving a somewhat related opinion on twitter. He thinks BJ & DC will try to detract from a series of failures on their part. |
