U can’t just compare the numbers now with the numbers a few months ago. The more we test the more cases we will have. This doesn’t necessarily mean we have more cases in total in the UK it just means we know about more.

The important numbers are the amount being hospitalized and the amount dying. Which currently remain low.

They do remain thankfully low. But yesterday was the highest since 13 July and was a significant increase. Let's hope it was a statistical blip. But the more infections, the more the spread, the higher the risk. Not sure why some people seem to have some kind of philosophical objection to trying to reduce the spread and reduce the risk of a virus we don't yet understand. With schools and unis returning I'm sure we would all rather there was less virus in the community.

Norwich NR5

It depends who you believe, or if you can be bothered to look at the facts, rather than believing the bullshit..

Last week, my friends father died. He was on the stroke ward here in Norwich, having suffered a stroke a couple of weeks ago.

The family were alarmed to read that his death certificate stated he had died of covid, so took it up with the registra.

The family were informed by the registrar, that "unless death is caused by a car accident etc, she was under pressure from the authorities to record all deaths as covid.

They are manipulating the figures to justify there cause, 1500 people die every week in the UK, yet they refuse to say if the" natural " deaths are included or excluded from the numbers given out.

More worrying is that people in the UK are being jailed without trial, just spirited away for denying covid. Here in Norfolk they have converted a airdrome hangar at RAF Coggeshall. These detention buildings are being built all over the UK.

My licencing officer, a copper of some 20+ years service, told me just recently that back in June a memo went to every Constabulary in the UK, warning of "civil unrest in September and October.

Scary times here in the UK, or are we in North Korea???

Stop spouting utter drivel. They are not building "secret detention facilities" and doctors are not being told to slap Covid as the cause of death of every death certificate. You are fear mongering plain and simple.

All of the numbers are important, as they give us a more comprehensive ability to plan, rather than sit still and just look at today.

If the infection levels rise, we get problems further down the line. If they rise when we are at a seasonal point that brings people in doors for more of the time, it creates the easier way for the virus to be passed on to others.

We're not at the position that we were at in March and April, but must do what we can to make major cuts to the levels of infection out there. Our winter season is approaching, which is a hard time for the NHS to cope, without having this virus around.

Planning and management of our resources is vital this season

If someone goes into hospital and dies on death certificates it will state cause of death.. there is also a part that states other contributing factors .. if they had Covid at time of death then Covid would be entered here.. now I don’t know if they count that as Covid death but if they did then numbers of Covid deaths recorded would be actually lower than the official figures issued... also who would take a vaccine that was tested in under a year??

You have a point, however, we minions are not the decision makers, hence noting hospital admissions and deaths will produce less fear at present. Getting the economy going relies on people not being scared to leave their homes. Also, the rising infection rate and stability in the other figures, gives rise to the speculation of a less virulent virus: definitely good news for the economy.

I do, however, think it wise for the vulnerable to remain cautious.

Not really. Two weeks ago in France there were about 4000 cases a day. In late March there were a similar number of cases per day and 500 people were dying a day. Yesterday 3 people died with covid in France. The situation now is nothing like it was at the peak.

I know "they say" they are testing more people but a larger figure of infections is always going to be a worry. On the other hand, we are opening up more so it is going to happen.

Nice to see a see a sensible approach the indication that hospital cases are low and deaths in Scotland are zero shows something against the true story. Although not what the media wants you to believe that doesn't sell newspapers.

Planning and management of our resources is vital this season "

Can't you just send the elder ably back to care home with the virus and let them die like last time that solve your problem.

There only old vulnerable human beings, after all and you need to clear your beds.

Onkd problem with that approach ach people with morals and conscious can't do it

Vulnerable so can they be safe if child brings it home from school

Children catch it and spread it but don't her seriously but do spread.

Interested in your insight

The vulnerable shouldn't be child minding. Visits from family in the garden, social distancing.

Also, if restrictions are broken, it should be on say so of those at risk. Many elderly would rather risk exposure to the virus than be shielded - their choice.

So risk of deaths a better choice"

It may be. It certainly isn't up to you to criticise their choice.

Hopefully one good thing to come out of this current crisis, will be people being more responsible when they have flu and viruses. In recent years it's become the case that people have gone to work or sent Thier children to school when they are not properly well.

My daughter has severe leaning difficulties and was very very poorly Xmas 18 with a very nasty virus she caught at her special school. She was ill for 6 weeks My family all stayed at home so that we didn't pass it on to anyone.

She has gone back to college today after 6 months with me looking after her and you can rest assured that my family will be taking every available precaution possible to avoid catching Covid and giving it to her fellow very vunerable students. She herself is not particularly vunerable to Covid.

When posting telling us to protect the vunerable/elderly please be aware that the vast majority of people are already trying to do so.

A third of all cases in England last week were people aged between 20 and 29.

"The numbers have been going up. And we've seen in other countries where this leads, and it is not a good place," Matt Hancock says.

Students starting university this month is a "concern", he adds.

Speaking to Radio 1 Newsbeat, the health secretary pointed to France and Spain, "where that second wave started largely amongst younger people, it then spreads".

"And now we're seeing a sharp rise in the number of people in hospital and the number of people who are dying in those countries.

"That hasn't happened here yet. And if people follow the social distancing rules, then we can stop that from happening here."

If a person doesn't pay for childcare now because they don't have any spare money and normally has the Grandparents babysitting, what would they prioritise to pay an extra bill? Food, roof over their head?

If they both normally work through the day now, to be able to do what you did they would need to get a different job pretty quick , again, not so black and white in this climate

So I think there has to be a lot of Grandparents taking bigger chances on getting the Covid to help their own children out as the only other solution would be for them to give their jobs up altogether.

When this all started I thought then that this is going to be one big mess when coming out of it and it is for a lot of people. Sadly I don't think a lot of people have a lot of choice right this minute

Thats almost certainly due to the fact that is mainly those under 40 contracting it at the moment.

There are much lower risk of need medical intervention.

Except there is not a large rise in deaths in France. It has been bubbling along at between 0 and 20 for three months now. Yesterday there were three deaths. It's probably why the French government isn't tightening lockdown, there watching the figures that actually count.

The vulnerable shouldn't be child minding. Visits from family in the garden, social distancing.

I think people would be naive to think that vulnerable people and grandparents are not going to be babysitting now either all day for youngsters or after school for schoolchildren as people are going back to work

Hence the "shouldn't". It's up to the parents to rearrange childminders.

Some may not be able to as their finances are not able to pay people. Life isn't black and white

I know it's easier said than done, but one needs to prioritise - I worked when my ex-husband was at home and vice versa.

It's easy to discuss but not easy to do. These families will have to prioritise, it doesn't matter what, just a case of doing it. What value do people place on lives when we know the most vulnerable include the elderly with underlying conditions. Change hours, change jobs, get a loan, see if universal credit can help (there used to be child care allowances on top of child tax credits, so assume there's similar under universal credit). Reduce hours, make use of after school clubs...

Yes, well with a little bendy bit at the edges you can grab hold of to stop you falling into space where it can be rather chilly and no roadside cafes.

Think of the alternatives. They can't afford to pay us to stay at home any more.... so the only choice they have is to say it's safe to go back to work.

it might end up being us just for the fact of the kids going back to school and it takes a while for those to filter thru

the biggest worry may well be when universities start going back at the end of the month! I think that is when you going to see the surge!

apparently if you live in london you have not been able to get a test for the last 2 days...

people in the north east are being told our nearest testing site is carlisle....

"

Number of tests always drops at weekend.. I don’t see any data to back up “test numbers dropping through the floor”

I have also read this. They say that the "viral load" is less because of people wearing face masks (yes the things we are protesting against) and social distancing.

I'd provide a link but....

I do wish people would look deeper than a bulletin point.

First of all you need to ascertain what constitutes 'a case'. Testing positive for covid without symptoms is causing much stir in the medical and scientific community right now.

Now look at hospital admissions and death rates, all conclusively down whilst the only figure rising is testing numbers. This notion of a second wave has been going on since April yet never appeared.

Now look at the fallibility of the swab tests, you will find conclusive proof that they are increasingly issuing false positives.

Happy to see a more optimistic view being expressed! No it hasn't gone away and we should all remain vigilant? However given common sense and precautions hopefully numbers will plateau out at a level of infections that can be handled and not overwhelm the health service and also let's be optimistic that the inoculation will appear before to long?

As an 'at risk' category I certainly hope so! :-

An Italian Dr made a similar statement based on his own hospital observations way back in June. He was still finding lots of patients but the proportion showing with serious symptoms was rapidly declining. Why still remains unproven. A less harmful strain became dominate or perhaps masks and social distancing means a significant reduction in the initial viral load people are being infected with?

If you look on worldometers for France you'll see that the case vs deaths in march / april had an almost identical curve albeit 2 weeks later.

If you look at the daily deaths now, despite cases shooting up most dramatically late July, the deaths are flat.

There could be a number of reasons why and the viral load is certainly one of them. Also, the ages of the people catching it makes a difference.

There is a web site that you'll find if you google "travelling tabby covid uk"

IF you scroll down to the graph "English Infections by Age Group" try switching between Now, 7 Day and In Total.

For 7 days, the number of cases drops the higher the age. (exclude the kids)

For In Total, the cases are relatively steady (exclude the kids)

In the 20-24 age group, In Total, there are a similar number of cases to the 90+ age group.

If you the switch to 7 days, there are about 15x more in the 20-24 age group compared to the 90+ age group. It hardly a surprise that deaths are so low now despite the rises in cases.

In fact, in the last 7 days, there has been as many cases in the 20-24 age group than in all age groups above 55 combined.

The challenge is to keep it like that but unfortunately, so many of those people in that younger age group have elderly relatives or provide care to the elderly...

"It depends who you believe, or if you can be bothered to look at the facts, rather than believing the bullshit..

Detention Centres?

Utter bullshit.

According to news reports we have already sold 85 million doses of Chaddox to Australia. Due for shipment in January. So I would imagine vaccinations will be available here before then. It isn't a matter of producing them because we started mass production in July. It's a case of getting Chaddox approved and that process is in It's final stages.

My guess is mid December.

The more cases you have the more testing will identify if you test more you identify more cases. The cases just go undetected if you don't test for them which is worse.

Actually it's about protecting others.

There is nothing brave about putting other people's lives at risk. Failing to prevent the spread of Covid-19 is nothing more than a callous disregard for human life and needless suffering. It's nothing to be proud of. This is the attitude that keeps the virus alive.

"I know "they say" they are testing more people but a larger figure of infections is always going to be a worry. On the other hand, we are opening up more so it is going to happen.

A school that went back on Friday have 56 pupils and three teachers in isolation at the minute

"

If you don't look you won't see!

It's blatantly obvious that if you test more you are more likely to detect more.

Test none find none - problem solved????

Testing should have been done earlier and the recent campaign : if you feel ill or have symptoms get tested is even more likely to enhance the numbers being "detected" . The ones who are "healthy" are being excluded from the sampling .

"And now we're seeing a sharp rise in the number of people in hospital and the number of people who are dying in those countries."

We noticed he referenced France, however the official stats do not match his statements so confused! Here is the link, scrolling down you have an extended period of case increases since July, further down are the recorded deaths over the same period.

As things start opening back up we are bound to get a rise in cases, as long as the deaths and hospitalisations stay low we are still in control.

Remember, lockdown wasn't to stop everyone getting it, it was to slow the spread and keep the NHS from being overwhelmed.

Everyone is going to die. Correct.

What we are talking about is needless deaths. People dying before their time. Also the suffering of people who are severely affected by the virus ( something we all tend to forget about).

So you are happy with 30 people a day dying to pay the price of us being able to piss it up with our mates and watch footie in a stadium?

As a matter of interest how many people need to needlessly die per day before it becomes enough for us to care?

How does one segregate 12 million over 65 year olds from the other 56 million.

This conveniently forgets that while older people are vulnerable not all vulnerable people are old. If you look at the unfortunate NHS people who lost their lives to this pandemic some of them were in their prime.
