Us human beings have a selfish streak that makes us only think of our own pathetic little need to survive without giving hardly a thought to the damage we are causing with our mountains of extra plastic we are making at the moment. I dread to think the size of the plastic mountain all this single use PPE is making. No wonder they are doubling the tax on single use plastic bags. I'll carry on wearing my useless snood the few times I go in a shop. At least it's recyclable and washable and fulfill the pathetic requirement to wear a face covering. | |||

Several members of his family were detained and imprisoned in "reform" camps, no crimes committed, other than being Uighers. He was living in Turkey with extended family and could not return to China without being detained also. I work in a facility where we teach thousands of Chinese students every year. They come from different walks of life, different family statuses and hold very varying views of the world, but most of them are happy to chat and so we learn a lot straight from the horse's mouth. | |||

This has 'nothing', absolutley nothing, to do with wearing a mask to help stop the spread of covid 19. Or prefering to live in Communist China. Which is what I wrote. I'm all for mask wearing and enforcement etc, but not to the point my every movement is being tracked, and if my phone runs out of battery or loses signal for longer than half an hour, I could be arrested for not complying with the tracking. The tracking is in the name of Covid control, but it is evident that it can and will be used for far more. People should be careful what they wish for in this country. | |||

"OMG there are some fkn retards in this forum... Try wearing a fit tested mask, gown, apron, gloves and visor for a 12 or 14 hour shift. That is uncomfortable, that is hard work. But if you are doing so whilst viewing those poor fuckers on ventilators you kind of get it. Refusing to wear a mask for 10 minutes in ASDA just highlights your utter disregard for others... there’s no excuse or reason unless you have a serious respiratory disorder in which case you are best staying at home and getting someone to shop for you anyway. "I didn't say that we would here, in the UK. I said China was using it's pervasive tracking app to extend its already high level surveillance culture even further into the lives of Chinese citizens. I've heard plenty of people in the UK saying they wished our tracking/tracing and enforcement etc around Covid was as good as China's. I'm saying they should be careful what they wish for. You cannot deny that people are summarily arrested, imprisoned on trumped up charges or held without charge etc. I taught a student from Xianjiang last year. Several members of his family were detained and imprisoned in "reform" camps, no crimes committed, other than being Uighers. He was living in Turkey with extended family and could not return to China without being detained also. I work in a facility where we teach thousands of Chinese students every year. They come from different walks of life, different family statuses and hold very varying views of the world, but most of them are happy to chat and so we learn a lot straight from the horse's mouth.

Actually, mask wearing and the mechanisms by which they enforce and trace it has everything to do with the Communist system, which does seek to control and direct every aspect of the lives of Chinese citizens. I'm all for mask wearing and enforcement etc, but not to the point my every movement is being tracked, and if my phone runs out of battery or loses signal for longer than half an hour, I could be arrested for not complying with the tracking. The tracking is in the name of Covid control, but it is evident that it can and will be used for far more. People should be careful what they wish for in this country.
Mask wearing in china and most of east asia was widespread before covid. The main driver was the hong kong flu in the 60s which hit there a lot harder than the West. "The majority of our students wore masks before Covid, but for pollution avoidance. They'd wear them travelling to the college and then remove them. They didn't wear them for infection control. They changed that behaviour once Covid took off in China in Jan, but the types of mask being worn also changed. Fashion masks with vents were replaced with single use medical style or N95 masks being posted here from worried parents back home. | |||

"Masks are mandatory here in Spain and I bloody hate them. I have asthma but it doesn’t affect that whatsoever, So anyone claiming asthma as a get out clause can bolt! But it does wreck havoc with my anxiety. Even in the depths of winter in Scotland I never work a scarf round my face for this reason. Had an anxiety attack so badly a couple of weeks ago o felt like I was having a heart attack. All that said, I wear shoes that destroy my feet sometimes cause they look cute, so I’ll stay that mask on to make the vulnerable feel safer, cos I’m not a dick" As asthma is often trigger by *too much* oxygen and not enough CO2, wearing a mask may even help asthmatics.
