There are a lot of ifs and buts because an event of this magnitude, being studied in this level of detail, is brand new. We just don't know.
We need to knuckle down, reduce transmission, support each other from a safe distance, so we can get our lives back sooner rather than later. |

Personally a second wave will hit, but we've now got so much more in place I terms of medical equipment we didn't have in the first wave.
It's going to be with us forever now like flu etc. And we have to get used to it and just be a little sensible. We won't see another lock down as the economy wouldn't survive.

I'm currently in 14 day quarantine because I visited a covid country.
Hoping to do the same again in the winter but hopefully by then the 14 day quarantine will be abandoned because the UK government will realise we have the same level of infections here as the country I want to visit. |

I shall carry on as I am doing now.
I avoid shops, and the muggles that are in them, I do as much online as humanly possible. I work at home. I don’t use public transport. I keep all but the closest family at arms length.
IF it hits, I shall bunker in and hide away from it all much the same as the previous months. |

Ditto.
It's beginning to wear me down.
But I'd rather be unhappy than inadvertently hurt or kill someone. |

That’s about how I feel, except that being a fat lump that I am, it’s more likely to kill me off. I think I’ll do all I can to avoid it. |

I went to a funeral yesterday. Well I stood in a crowd outside the church watching the webcast on my phone. There were only 20 people allowed in. It was beyond sad.
And then we went to the hired room at the pub and were packed in like sardines. So of course I could not stay. That was even more sad.
The NHS did not get over run, the Nightingales were never used. We have to get on with life.
Stay sensible, wash your hands, wear a mask.
But most of all carry on.

My hubby and I were planning on spending Christmas just the two of us anyway... but after this year it’s going to be really hard not to spend it with my family like we usually do.
I’ve only seen my grandparents twice this year, and I usually see them once a week. I’m starting to really miss normality. |

The hospitals didn't get overrun because we did what we had to and it wasn't winter.
I do community work. Have had to be there for improvised grief counselling for people who've lost multiple friends and relatives to Covid but haven't been able to go to funerals because of increased risk to themselves. Watched conditions deteriorate because of the effects of lockdown, and because of care not available. Have begged high risk people to stay inside. Have had to withdraw support because of local restrictions. Have held my breath as people have had to do things we'd never let them do under normal circumstances.
I'm watching my colleagues struggle under the increased strain of it.
This winter may break us. |

There are, understandably, a lot of 'possiblys' embedded in the second wave narrative, which often seem to be disregarded.
The truth is, nobody seems to know for certain, but historically there have been second waves and it'd be really unwise to discount them just because of a 'possibly'. |

That would really depend on the ability of the population to use common sense to avoid transmission
I guess we'll have a second wave then |

I think it's worth noting that at high levels of expertise, noting the uncertainty and that there are lots of variables, is a sign of credibility. "This is my honest assessment of the data, which isn't straightforward and I'm not going to sugarcoat for popularity" |

"Mystic Meg Fauci says second wave to be released in the Autumn."
What does an American scientist have to do with anything? And presumably he'd say fall, not autumn?
Although. Mysticism. Science. Transmission occurs overwhelmingly indoors. In colder months being outside is harder to do. In the autumn schools return and thus contacts increase (apparently a university in Alabama recently had more cases than Canada). Universities in some cases too, bringing people in from all sorts of different places.
Huh. It's almost like there's a reason why they say stuff. Magic? Nah. |

Yes, he's become the de facto figurehead of the public health fight in the US.
Have you noticed we're not in the US? That the figures look somewhat different here? That the shit show here looks like a paradise, a dream, a miracle compared to the clusterfuck of fuckery over there?
That maybe we should listen to people talking about our own country when making predictions?

It's going to depend on how good our government manages things.
Having lost the confidence and trust of the public, from the Cummings dangerous revelations and its not recovering, I don't think they will ever get it back. That's going to make things harder, which doesn't bode well with difficult times ahead and leadership that's probably going to continue to be as bad as it has been all along.
There seems a commitment to keeping society open now, for the sake of businesses. As people are going to continue to be in higher risk environments, coupled with seasonal changes that will make things harder, I do see things taking a longer time to get the UK on to similar levels as our neighbours. Difficult winter ahead |

The press keep reporting negative things and doom and gloom as that is what sells they know we will lap up the negative and talk about it for weeks while positive news is passed over very quickly as it doesn t sell. If there is a second wave think it may be localised spikes as opposed to a full country emergency. But here in wales i think even if things all went back to normal tomorrow the powers that be in cardiff will still try keep us in lock down. Think it may be time as some say to protect the vulnerable and the rest of us just get on with it . |

Please people this may offend a few but start to use your brains
The second wave will come after xmas or when the flu usually kills people
People are like sheep and never question what they being told and scare people into change history does the same thing over and over...
Well why should we wait till winter for second wave when according to the government more people getting infected
Surly more infected means more death
But in the last 7 days only 125 people died
Less than in previous years
So unless you cant see it something doesnt add up
Flu usually kills loads of people in winter and thats why ul see a second wave then

Judging by the latest results the second wave may well be on its way well before Christmas. Sadly too many people are ignoring government guidelines for anything to be effective. Fortunately at the moment the majority of cases seem to be in the under 40s and so death rates are low but as the kids go back to school and the weather deteriorates and people spend more time together indoors things may change drastically. |

For the purposes of this virus old is 55/60 and over I have been advised. Do you know what percentage of the work force, including many key workers, that would remove from the population? Excellent idea you may say, jobs for youngsters but it's still removing a big section of spending from the economy. It will also take a lot of child care providers out of the picture, voluntary workers and the National Trust along with crimplene slacks manufacturers would go bust. |

Flu will kill less because those who would usually be vulnerable have already lost their lives.
The 2nd wave scare has been coming for the last 5 months, just more scare tactics and fearmongering.
As you say, numbers are down massively and recovery rates are well up, but there's still people who believe we are in imminent danger of dying |

Flu could easily kill more, there are more people about that have a lower immunity to it. Yes, flu will take out the old who have other conditions, but past flu epidemics took out many youngsters who were born post last outbreaks, if you have survived the last outbreak, you are more likely to survive the next. Make no mistake, each winter the NHS holds it breath and hopes for the best regarding the flu. |
