Ambalance dully called, he was checked over, couldn't find anything wrong apart from headache, sickness, shaking couldnt stand up. Finally put it down to a mystery illness and guess what NO CORONAVIRUS TEST.

I don't think those are Corona virus symptoms?

There are lots of other illnesses that will keep affecting us and others, pretty sure the ambulance crew who attended would be au fait with vivid symptoms..

Hope he's ok, also you can request a test I believe?

If he wants to get a test... One thing this lot have organised well is drive through testing... Or postal testing... All very easy to arrange online... Good luck

As far as I'm aware the advice would be to book a test online,I'm pretty sure paramedics aren't able to carry them out....

Not covid symptoms, why would they test him for something they don't think he has?

I have never heard of a paramedic just saying 'Oh, it's a mystery illness, toodles'.

It sounds like a blood sugar issue, is he diabetic?

Sounds like Hypoglycemia to me too - but the Paras are well versed in spotting the signs so I don't think they would have missed it if it was - as it's very very dangerous to health right in the moment if not treated immediately and the paras didn't do any of that, I would be sure then that it wasn't Hypoglycemia.

Doctors to arrange tests is the best way forward.

Apparently we have a daily capacity of 350000 tests per day and we are only testing half of that.

Seems a bit mad that ambulance crews are not testing as it's a missed opportunity.

Although headache is a symptom the others are not it's less likely to be covid the dizziness and other symptoms are more likely to be caused by high blood pressure or low blood sugers, although highly unlikely it does seem that the chase to take a routine swab as a precaution was missed

The Ambulance Services have been trying to stop members of the public from calling them and asking for a test.

Reason is quite simply that if they did do covid testing the public would swamp the service/s with test requests.

Exactly, the ambulance service is swamped even without covid, they do not have the time to be popping round and testing anyone who fancies a test. If a patient is not showing the main signs and symptoms of covid, they won't be tested and I fully agree with that.

I've had coronavirus and are part of the study group, symptoms range from high temperature, head ache, sickness, rash, marks on feet, total lack of energy, cough, runny nose, loss of appetite, bringing up blood, breathing difficulties, muscle spasms, bone ackes light cold or no symptoms what so ever . The virus is caught through, eyes, nose, mouth. My step father is in his 80s. No sign of diabetes

Those symptoms cover a wide range of illnesses though, the main ones are the fever, cough and loss of taste and smell.

I don't think anybody suspects you were using them as a taxi service. You were genuinely worried and that is perfectly normal, however, I don't think you're qualified to question what paramedics should of shouldn't do.

You asked if we can believe they didn't test him for covid, obviously alot of us can believe it and don't have an issue with it. I'm glad he's OK

All I can say is I trust that medical professionals will know when a test is necessary.

I was in A&E a few weeks ago with chest and breathing issues, turned out I strained muscles in my chest, and was asked a few questions about symptoms. They had no cause for alarm so I wasn't tested.

As I said, I trust the judgement of medical professionals.

It would m an paramedics carrying biohazardous waste which they would have to return to hospital with and take to test station in that time they could have missed a couple of heart attacks!

I'm sure there was no malicious intent and they know what they are doing it's kinda their job.

If they where worried about covid I'm sure they would have done more.

Results aren't instant though, the swabs are sent to a lab and it takes 24-48hrs to get the results, so it's understandable why the ambulance didn't do it.

By testing someone while the crew is there...it would at least set the wheels in motion.

I have not tried to get a test but I have seen on here that it is not always straight forward in getting one. Then you have to wait for the post to deliver it! But hey we had some qualified people on the spot...who in my opinion could have done one there and then. But as I said that is my opinion.

Don't you think paramedics should be doing what they are intended to do which is emergencies! Having them carry out covid tests would just take up to much time when there are other measures available for testing.

Hang on! A 80 year old bloke who may have a virus that could kill him.

I think time is of the essence to him...and yeah I think they should carry testing kits and to use their own judgement when they need to use one.

Just because they dont do it now does not make it right.

I think this is something that need a urgent review!

But as I said that is my opinion."

I think this is where the rapid tests (90 minute results) would obviously come in handy.

By all accounts I don't even know that the OP's father would have been admitted to hospital even with a positive result as wasn't having any breathing difficulty and has made a full recovery within the last few days so in this situation all was well.

My question would be are those paramedics now having to isolate as they would have been in the house performing the check up in the first place.....

There's an idea. Attend a bona fide emergency and test for Covid. Doesn't matter that it could be and usually is time critical.

Paramedics don't have time to wait around for 90 minutes. I think the paramedics were right in this case, they checked the patient wasn't in immediate danger and acted accordingly, it's then up to the patient or their caregiver to organise a test.

Yeah, I was quoting someone else who said this situation is where the 90 minute tests would have been handy but paramedics can't just sit and wait 90 minutes for a test result. It's far more sense for the patient/caregiver to arrange a text.

Just to say, they were in the house approximately 45 mins in full equipment . I don't expect them to wait around to get the results but surely it would make sense to carry tests and it takes seconds to do . They don't even have to take the tests back to the hospital, put it in the post or my mother could. Because he felt better he went out the next day. If he had had a test he would of stayed in and waited for the results. We are talking about an 84 year old man here . Instead at least 20 people have to stay at home and lucky I made sure I was in full gear too

That only makes sense to you. The job of an ambulance crew is not to do a COVID test. Can you imagine the calls ambulance crews will get with that thinking? You say take test to hospital, nothing is as simple as that.

That isn't their job though, and if you all suspected he had covid, why did he go out the next day? He should have stayed in and had a test organised.

I agree, the most important thing regarding this is that people get a test and isolate themselves, too many times we see stories in the news of people taking their test and then going out before getting their results and putting other people at risk.

If the OP suspected covid19 and ordered a test then everyone who had come into contact should have isolated themselves.

I'm assuming the OP is also isolating now.....

An older lady who is known to us has tested positive, then negative and last week tested + for C-19 again.

No symptoms, no illness and would probably have gone undetected had it not been for regular - and- mandatory testing in the sheltered housing complex she lives in.

Incidentally, she and her neighbours have been battened down since March.

Contact verboten!

If you suspect you have covid then you should be ordering a home test kit and staying indoors.

Closing down a couple of drive through test stations doesn't affect that.

I do find it quite worrying that someone that you all thought had Covid went to the shops the next day. Especially after you all thought he was at deaths door the previous day. It was very irresponsible and he could have caused someone else to get seriously ill. And people blame the young ones for being careless.

But you guys are not getting it, he was given the all clear by the medics. Because I've had the coronavirus, when I got to him 2 days later I recognised some of the symptoms I'd heard about. I managed to get the test for him and administered it. I took responsibility, my step father is in his 80s and he's not the sharpest tool in the tool box now. Do you know what I think, all people want to do is argue on here. I don't live with my father in law, I didn't know he was ill my mother called his doctor, the doctor told her to call the NHS, they said call an ambalance. They turned up, did lots of tests on him, for heart attack, a stroke ext all I'm suggesting is wouldn't it be wise as we are supposed to have masses of tests to actually put them in the back of an ambulance and test routinely. The doctors at the hospital I work in are saying that needs to be done. As for tests, everything is at least 15 miles away and they ran out of tests on line when my mother phoned for one

That wouldn't work.. Once public knew crews were testing they'd make up symptoms just to get an ambo for a test.. Trust me this happens.. Then you'd be tied up dealing with that instead ofvsvtuslly getting to the cardiac arrest, stroke, or whatever. Crews and services are already stretched to breaking point

The clue is in the wording...Emergency service.

ambulance crews and paramedics deal with emergencies...not Covid testing.

Why doesn't the RAC or Green flag recovery guys carry test kits as well...just in case.

Case in example...major road crash with life changing injuries...ambulance crew will be on its way after swabbing for a Covid test...be about 15 to 20 minutes...

at the end of the day if he was that bad why let him go shopping the next day if the family suspected Covid?

They probably didn't put his leg in plaster either. The fact is they know what symptoms they are looking for and didn't think it was necessary.

"And they were wrong "

They did their job and deemed it wasn’t an emergency. Regardless of what illness your dad had. They were proved right when your dad then went out shopping. He clearly wasn’t on deaths door as if he was they would have taken him in.

Who are the 20 people that he infected ?

Coronavirus takes many forms, all you hear from this shower is you get a temperature, you get a cough, you lose your smell and taste. How about the runny nose, how about the sickness, how about coughing up blood, how about the headache, how about lack of breath, how about having no energy what so ever, how about the rash, how about the shaking, how about the red sores over your feet and how about blood pressure so low you should be dead and then how about no symptoms what so ever and yes I've seen it all. From coming into hospital but seeming to have a mild infection then 48 hours dead.

"But you guys are not getting it, he was given the all clear by the medics. Because I've had the coronavirus, when I got to him 2 days later I recognised some of the symptoms I'd heard about. I managed to get the test for him and administered it. I took responsibility, my step father is in his 80s and he's not the sharpest tool in the tool box now. If a doctor or a medic tells him to jump he will. If they say he's fine then he takes their word for it. I work in the NHS and we all can't believe kits are not on board but then everything is outsourced nowadays so I guess what do I expect. God I so wish I hadn't started this bloody forum "

He wasn't given the all clear, you told us they said he had a mystery illness, a mystery illness that had him so poorly your mother thought he was going to die, yet you all let him pop to the shops the day after, you'd booked him a covid test because you were so convinced that he had it, that you let him go out and potentially infect others.

The only people wrong in the situation were you and anyone else that was supposed to be caring for him.

Again I'll tell you, paramedics do not have time to sit down and twiddle their thumbs so people can get a covid test without having to lift a finger, they are already overworked.

How about not letting someone you think has covid go out shopping?

Please stop this, as far as my mother and step father were concerned they had been told he didn't have coronavirus. I didn't believe it, managed to get a test for him and that wasn't easy and done everything I could to do my own track and trace. Yes I contacted them and what a waste of a phone call xx
