We are now the virus, our inability to change our ways, regular washing of hands, clean properly surfaces that cannot be avoided touching by many people. Our expectations that we have that the government will bail us out financially with systems like fulough and funding to keep places and services and industrys funded through these times. Our need to meet others outside close family and colleagues only. Our attitude that our way if life come first fuck the consequences.
Our attitude that the small things we do dont matter to the bigger picture.
So what's the answer,
If I was Nicola I'd start making people really pay for their actions and perhaps claw back some of the monies covid has cost.
Firstly END furlough in 1 month, that is time enough for those on furlough to realise the gravy train has an expiry date and it's in our hands to follow rules and rid us of covid.
Business including workplaces must be fined or closed for a period of 1 month following ANY breach of the rules.
Anyone knowingly including young people ( not children ) who break the rules should be fined or given community payback orders to be done when everything has died down.
We need stronger governments across the world to deal with this in a unilateral way and countries should be punished too if they break the guidelines with the use of trade agreements being suspended ect but it all starts at home with us before looking further afield.
Right from the outset there have been many thousands of people ignoring the guidelines right down to the simplest little things who thought and still believe the rules don't apply to them , Time to make people pay for their actions.
In today's society where we believe the universe revolves around us and our little wants and needs is our right are now learning the harsh reality, we are the virus and covid 19 is the cure.

I agree with much of what you say. People certainly need to take more responsibility for their actions and behaviour and stop being selfish.
The problem is - who is going to monitor and enforce the guidelines, whether for individuals or businesses, as strictly as you suggest?
Whist it is obviously falls upon the police to do this, is it actually realistic to think they have the resources to do it effectively? |

Ok firstly this is a really strange place to put this kind of statement
Let’s start with furlough - you can not tell a business not to trade without giving them financial support - this will result in failing businesses and a slow economy result in a even worse recession than we currently find ourselves in.
In terms of you branding people selfish for wanting to see family etc , are you aware of the mental health weight self isolation puts on people and again you need to weigh up the long term implications of a very dictatorship lockdown you are asking for.
It has been proven MOST fit and healthy people do not die from covid, we should return all fit health and working age people back to the norm with social distance remaining and continue to support the vulnerable and elderly financially and allowing them to remain in lockdown.
Your view is very right wing so much so a Tory government would say your to right wing for them. |

Cookie at the moment is still on furlough (she desperately wants to return to work) with no fault of her own due to the governments rules she can not return to work yet as there is no work! So if the furlough was jst to end her employer would have no choice but to give her redundancy. So unless the government change the rules you beleive we should be financially pushed. Some people still have no choice in the matter! Wee nicola is one in control. |

"Ok firstly this is a really strange place to put this kind of statement "
It's a forum for discussion so what's strange about it
"Let’s start with furlough - you can not tell a business not to trade without giving them financial support - this will result in failing businesses and a slow economy result in a even worse recession than we currently find ourselves in."
They have had 4 months of support, what should they get 4 years. ?
Not exactly encouraging a change of habits is it ?
"In terms of you branding people selfish for wanting to see family etc , are you aware of the mental health weight self isolation puts on people and again you need to weigh up the long term implications of a very dictatorship lockdown you are asking for."
I actually said seeing family was acceptable.
"It has been proven MOST fit and healthy people do not die from covid, we should return all fit health and working age people back to the norm with social distance remaining and continue to support the vulnerable and elderly financially and allowing them to remain in lockdown. "
It's the MOSTLY fit and healthy people that's causing the situation to continue.
"Your view is very right wing so much so a Tory government would say your to right wing for them."
Simply my view, not asking a Tory government or the SNP to endorse my views . |

When those who make the rules cant be bothered to follow them then people's attitudes change, then when their actions go unpunished and even defended then people give up and decide why should the bother. We need to get things moving again in a responseable manner. Fines and punishments only serve to drive communities apart as people will be scared to go out. Yes furlough needs to end and those abusing the systems need to be stopped. What's the answer.....who knows and it will be several years before we know which country got it right. |

Totally agree it is a shit position for cookie to be in the situation she finds herself in.
It's not her fault nor her company s fault either. It's the selfish people continued rule ignoring tendencies and the government's fault for not stringently enforcing the rules instead of empowering the people to " do the right thing".
They have all let the situation continue, tough talking tough enforcement and tough penalties should have been in force for the last 4 months and cookie would most likely be back at work. |

Until businesses are allowed to return there staff to work the furlough has to continue
Fit and healthy people get it and survive easily enough and would help build here immunity |

so?
are you going to fully close or fine the NHS hospitals due to NHS employees fully breaking the rules?
Have you ever been in a NHS canteen or rest room for relaxing at work? do you really think any abide by the rules?
if you do, then you are not aware of your surroundings.
so again, are you going to close or fine the NHS |

Private hospitals , are a business, so yes , warnings then closures.
Nhs hospitals are not a business, there run like a business but still not a business , they are funded from the public purse . How do you deal with your example then , ? You make the staff and managers responsible for their own actions. Rulebreakers get disciplinery action taken against them just like any other institution where people must follow rules.
If government threaten some senior hospital managers about losing their jobs then watch them sort out the issues you mention. Not rocket science.

It's easy to make this type of comment cinders but you never commented on the topic. Do you have an opinion on the topic as opposed my user name . Even if you think I'm totally wrong on my views that would be fine if you explain why. Perhaps you could add to the discussion as opposed a random comment about the poster.

I am fine thankyou.
Like most people I'm very frustrated, (not sexually) lol, having worked right through this as a key worker I'm very frustrated at the attitude of the government's, scottish and UK, taking a softly softly approach to something that is changing the way we live and the way we will go forward. Telling the people we all need to do the right thing is simply not good enough. Tough talk , tough decision taking and putting an end to the funding to force people to embrace the changes now , not 4 years from now with sporadic local rules being implemented after the fact. |

I think the important thing to remember is that we are all living through this pandemic differently
I too have worked the whole way through. I've seen the impact on people's mental health, I've seen the financial struggles people face even with furlough. I've seen good people lose their livelihood over night.
Infact had my current role not started at the end of March my sons and I would probably now be facing homelessness as I was only on a fixed term contract previously which ended.
I also actually dread furlough changing because I have staff who are too vulnerable to come back to work and services that won't be able to re open. So staff can't return with nothing to do.
I also see how desperate people who relied upon what we do are for us to open our doors due to the isolation they are now facing. Yet I know it may not be wise to reopen at the height of cold and flu season.
The worst thing in all of this for me is the lack of compassion or understanding for other people's perspectives. Perhaps in some ways that is what you were trying to get at in your post.
We are all trying to navigate an alien situation. We can all only do our best and sometimes that means being a little bit selfish too.
If I hadn't seen my friends over the last few weeks I'd have fallen apart mentally. I'd have been of no good to my sons or at work if that had happened.
It's not as black and white as you state

"What a load of bollocks. Life goes on. Too many opinions and judgement of other people rather than just getting your head down and getting on with it. "
Someone from Aberdeen, saying it's bollocks. How is just getting on with it working out for the more vulnerable people from Aberdeen panning out.
You have clearly demonstrated the attitude of many people now. Thanks for proving my point. |

The thing is, we all now know how the virus spreads only us yes every single person on this site knows how to stop the spread. We've now had 6 months of information drilled into our heads, wash your hands, wear masks to minimise the spread, don't touch your eyes or face, social distancing etc. Yet some people think they are different and think they are immune to the virus, selfish and don't care about anyone else, complain there isn't music in the pub. These are the people that need to be educated more about the seriousness of Coronavirus. It's also partly to do with the Government opening places to soon, putting money before people. |

The pubs should be monitored by the councils who give them their licenses. They can check that they are taking customers details and following protocols. Same with restaurants. The police should only be involved where there are too many people in the premises. Licenses should be removed for premises breaking the rules.
I get asked every night when I visit my Mum in hospital if I have any symptoms, I can only go at a set time and I’m the only visitor allowed to see her. The patients are tested every 4 days. Covid will probably be life threatening for her if she caught it so I will happily wear a mask in shops, shopping centres, fill in track and trace forms, etc and use hand sanitiser at all times.
I have been to two pubs recently and felt completely safe in both of them. Procedures were followed in both places.
We do all have to take responsibility for our actions so that we help stop the spread of the virus.

My grandpa died of old age & other health conditions, never seen a doc nor went into hospital, slept beside his wife that night, she's never been ill & has health conditions of her own.
No enquiry as he was cremated.
Guess what was on his death certificate...covid.
The numbers are absolutely fudged. Cases do not equal deaths.
Poor health and old age always makes you more susceptible to viruses, bacteria & illness.
Vaccines cannot be safe, it hasn't been full tested and cannot be fully tested in such a short period of time. Norm is 10 yrs.
Lock down did show how much unessential shite we have in our lives though.
Plastic waste is on the up & god knows what shut they've been doing whilst everyone's locked up.
As for we are the virus, well yes we're a virus to planet earth, just look at the devastation we've caused with pollution, waste, deforestation & deliberate killing of many other species.
Climate change will see more droughts, less fresh water, soil degradation & famine.
UK imports most of its food...
There's bigger things than a 0.04% population killing virus. |

I agree with 99% of your statement, but you can’t open the country up for everyone while keeping vulnerable people hidden. Even if it is for their own safety. You’d be creating a new tier of class system where disabled and elderly treated differently - first to lose jobs, last to be employed etc. That would impact their mental health and confound the issue. There’s also no evidence that vulnerable people are affected worse by symptoms. Some catch the virus and have little/no symptoms. Healthy people get it and die. The government need to keep doing what they’re doing. Open up gradually, Test and trace will identify who is at risk. Get people back to work, but keep furlough as an ongoing support mechanism for those identified to be at risk who need to isolate for a short while, or when towns/cities go into a localised lockdown.
Also, there has never been a successful vaccine found for any Coronavirus in history., it could literally be years (If at all) before a vaccine is found. Not viable to hide people away for such a long period of time. Chances are we will obtain “herd immunity” before scientists can get a reliable vaccine. It’s just not realistic to shut people away until then. |

We have a benefit system for the socially vulnerable, why not make one for the medically vulnerable. There is no need for them to hide if we can we have safe places for them, so that the vulnerable can go out and feel happy to walk out of their door rather than stay inside from fear of people walking too close to them and putting them at risk.

He n your other hand taking your virus analogy an other way - we are indeed a virus, over populated and creating an environment where the weak still survive. Perhaps they only way for continued survival is a cull of the weak and feeble of the virus - reduce the population and clean up the environment. Survival of the fittest in its purest form. |

"
Or... Other people be a little more aware, a little more empathetic, and have one world for all.... Where people sometime do things for the benefit of others... Make a change.

I couldn't agree with this comment more. Coronavirus is here granted but how many people are actually dying directly from it?!? A friend of mine died in a car accident in June, he had Covid in March, Yet Covid was on his certificate!
I also know of 2 people from my area who have died within the past month alone from suicide, both under 30.
I think the sooner the world gets back to normal the better.
"My grandpa died of old age & other health conditions, never seen a doc nor went into hospital, slept beside his wife that night, she's never been ill & has health conditions of her own.

Yes, an uncle died back in April, he had the virus but was not going to see Christmas this year anyway thanks to a second round of cancer. Death is just something that gets us all in the end one way or another. |

"We are now the virus, our inability to change our ways, regular washing of hands, clean properly surfaces that cannot be avoided touching by many people.
My universe doesn't revolve around your idiology, you be you and I will carry on being me "

The New World Order is a crazy conspiracy theory that a secretive power elite with a globalist agenda is conspiring to eventually rule the world through a totalitarian world government, enslaving the people.
It's totally untrue of course, even though Bush, Brown, Clinton, Obama, Blair keep bleating on about this imaginary new world order. |

So you're suggesting we all accept some kind of dystopian state where all forms of social interaction outside of immediate family are prohibited.
Not a world I want to live in thank you.
There is more to life than existing. We are not biorobots tasked with eating, sleeping and working. Humans need social contact for their mental wellbeing, you are suggesting we try to suppress one of the most basic elements of humanity.

Ending furlough will be a disaster. There are a number of industries which are not viable under current guidelines and risk disappearing without support. These are sectors which when COVID is under control will be able to return. I’m particularly talking about the live entertainment sector, but hospitality is still well below capacity.
If businesses shut down they can’t just pick up again. If skilled staff are laid off they won’t necessarily be able to return to their previous roles. |

"Ok firstly this is a really strange place to put this kind of statement
Your view is very right wing so much so a Tory government would say your to right wing for them."
The OP goes well beyond conservative views! What he proposes sounds like a military dictatorship |

Interesting. Always practiced hand hygiene, always avoided public transport and nhs waiting room when possible as I don’t enjoy coughs and colds , careful in crowded places, keep my hands off my face, taken high daily vitC for years , very rarely get any kind of illness. Couldn’t care less about government advice or rules, they’re a bit dim seems.
I would say we need less state control not more, people generally figure things out when the government stay well out of it.
A quick google on sparrow genocide tells you what can happen when authoritarian governments try and solve anything important , I think ours are just as dim. |

Furlough should be time limited, the virus has an incubation period of approximately 2 weeks, we are 4 months into furlough, why ?? Because people get away with breaking the rules and continueing to spread the virus. My opinion, punish them where it hurts, in their pocket. Why should everyone else suffer because of them. |

"He n your other hand taking your virus analogy an other way - we are indeed a virus, over populated and creating an environment where the weak still survive. Perhaps they only way for continued survival is a cull of the weak and feeble of the virus - reduce the population and clean up the environment. Survival of the fittest in its purest form." Tell your parents or grandparents that then |

"We are now the virus, our inability to change our ways, regular washing of hands, clean properly surfaces that cannot be avoided touching by many people.
In today's society where we believe the universe revolves around us and our little wants and needs is our right are now learning the harsh reality, we are the virus and covid 19 is the cure.
why should rid of furlough, if some ppl can't go bk to work yet it's not their fault

So the workers who have followed the guidelines have their furloughed pay removed because of others actions. Cool. |

"Ok firstly this is a really strange place to put this kind of statement
The OP goes well beyond conservative views! What he proposes sounds like a military dictatorship "
Only for a very short period, had it been done in the first month instead of faffing about covid would be gone. Remember covid 19 has an incubation period of roughly 2 weeks. 4 weeks of strict rules and movement would have seen the virus all but gone. Quicker we do it now the less impact on the future. |

Will.gladly do all that as long as the government can provide...
Irrefutable proof that demonstrares virus causes disease and are infectious with all the proper control groups.
But they wont because they cant. Think about that.
Youre being conditioned to accept all their assertions without a shred of proof.
Well done!"
So covid is a conspiracy theory . I'm sure families of the bereaved will disagree but we are all entitled to an opinion. |

"The pubs should be monitored by the councils who give them their licenses.

This makes me sad I saw my mum the whole way through because I have 3 young children one with autism and my husband worked all the way through I couldn’t have managed without her! I don’t wear masks because they give me such anxiety that I can’t breathe I started having nose bleeds when I wore them. Should I be punished "
No you should certainly not be punished you have a legitimate reason for not wearing a mask, I assume though you understand you are more at risk of spreading the virus so take extra precautions when your out and about especially when you saw your mum. That was technically rule breaking and selfish as you put your needs before your mum's and others. Did you think if the worst happenewd to your mum how would you have managed for the rest of your life as opposed a few months following rules. |

While cancer is tragic, you can't catch cancer sitting next to someone in a pub or resteraunt or on the train on the way home. You can't then pass cancer on to your parents or grandparents during a Sunday roast. Sorry for being blunt but they are 2 completely different issues. |

Goods don't recover from the virus after two weeks. Depending on the temperature and UV light incidence, the virus can live on a surface for varying amounts of time. Hence the reason for concern that the frozen food storage warehouse in New Zealand could have been the source of the latest outbreak. |

Agreed which is why I said EXTRA precautions should be put in place . Perhaps those at risk goods should be banned ( if posibe) or be individually red labeled with the likes " these goods have a high potential risk from corona virus" extra precautions must be taken.
Again it only takes simple measures. |

Looks like OP has really got the fear of this thing.
I would say I'm actually now more scared of the loss of freedoms and enforced changes to a normal way of life than I am of any virus. Especially when you look at actual numbers of deaths compared to plenty other things we live with on a daily basis. Road traffic accidents, diabetes linked with obesity, as mentioned above the many cancers. If people are normally that scared of death why are all the roads not one way so can't hit oncoming traffic, why not ban all overeating and limit food and drink by enforced rationing.
Once you start with these new 'life protecting' policies where will it end. |

Goods could sit in storage for 2 weeks, perishable foods will be off the menu till it has calmed down worldwide and extra precautions put in place for goods that can't sit in storage for 2 weeks.
So a two interruption to the food supply for a start. "
I think your missing my point, the uk government has took a stand to prevent the spread of a killer virus, but they've shown no backbone to make it work, instead we have ongoing restrictions , now at localised areas, but all that means is a continuation of the situation for an indefinite time frame. Unfortunately people and businesses cant have a situation like this indefinitely. So , we either ALL say fuck it and go about our normal lives and whoever dies through covid dies , fuck it survival of the fittest as said earlier. Or we grab the bull by the horns and say let's stick to the rules for couple of months at best (strictly enforced) and have some major disruption in our lives for 1 shortish period. Problem is the uk government has tried to appease everyone for 4 months, it never worked. Simple. Trial run over, time to get serious in my opinion. |

"Once Dominic Cummings was exonerated and did not face any consequences, the Government lost all authority. I agree with most if not all of OP’s points. Sadly, this is wishful thinking. All I can say is I will take responsibility for my own actions and follow the rules the best I can. "
Yep cmo for Scotland was just as stupid which is why they should have been immediately sacked. One was allowed to resign and the other still in his job. Your right stupidly from both governments. |

"Ok firstly this is a really strange place to put this kind of statement
The OP goes well beyond conservative views! What he proposes sounds like a military dictatorship
Only for a very short period, had it been done in the first month instead of faffing about covid would be gone. Remember covid 19 has an incubation period of roughly 2 weeks. 4 weeks of strict rules and movement would have seen the virus all but gone. Quicker we do it now the less impact on the future.

Ah in your fantasy world it’s all going to go away in 2 weeks. Gotcha
Lol we've actually had 4 months of people doing what they want, perhaps if we had 4 weeks of people doing as they were told at the beginning we would not be having this discussion.
For your cunning plan to work all the world would have to follow it. You may be good but you’re not that good.
You should re read the original post , I covered that there too. "
No I saw it, it’s just nonsense. |

I personally don’t think it was a good idea to open pubs and restaurants and even to encourage people to eat in them for 50% off is only going to add to the problem. I do see that there was a need to kick start the economy again but most restaurants were doing ok with a takeaway/delivery service.
Dare I mention global warming???
We have a deadly virus on every corner of the planet and still people couldn’t care less. So we’ve got no chance of saving the planet from rising temperatures unless the virus wipes us out first.
We could all be doomed sooner than planned but hey ho I’ve had a good run and have few regrets. X |

You know Gemini, you've had quite a few inputs into the thread voicing a number of stumbling blocks which I have answered but you chose to dismiss my answer without saying why it wouldn't work but you've yet to tell us your thoughts on a solution so instead of being smarmy and saying something is nonsense let's see you put in a constructive response or solution and add to the discussion instead of just sitting back and adding comments like just nonsense. Anyone can do that, why not you try and be different from the knuckle draggers.

"Daily Telegraph columnist argues that Sweden got it right, while the UK got it badly wrong, at staggering cost. Lockdown advocates will hate this piece.
"
Sweden population, under 11 million
UK population over 65 million.
You cannot compare, strategies . The NHS would never have been able to cope.
In a roundabout way trump dismissed the virus in the early days and pretty much took swedens approach and let people sort themselves out. Have a wee look at the deaths in America and say the strategy works. |

A better comparison would be to compare sweden with other Scandinavian countries. It does come out well compared to any of the others with a death rate more than 10x any other country. Germany is surely a better comparison to the uk. |

Love a good old Red vs Blue political debate. The lefties vs the Righties. Each blaming each other for the Wrongs and the Rights all claiming to be experts....
The point of all of this is the God awlful Virus. We must take action to Police ourselves. This will not go away on its own. Furlough to some is an absolute life saver. To a few is is a great paid holiday and they are loving the freedom.
If we don’t knuckle down and help reduce the spreading. Things won’t get back to what we had before. Businesses will go under.
Yes fines for those that blatantly break the rules. If they can’t pay, put them away. Or this won’t go away.
Responsible people have to do responsible things |

Good to see this thread in amongst the big boys and girls forum. Usually the far right views of the OP are reserved to the rather mundane Scottish forum. |
