"Debenhams is going bust due to this extended lockdown we are all living through, 14,000 people have lost they Jobs and it will affect other companies who supply them meaning more job lost. John lewis is shutting it's massive store in Birmingham too more job losses. Current covid deaths is 41,000, jobs lost nearly 100,000, it seems the medicine ( lockdown) is worse than covid , the economy is screwed for a generation, Sweden took the right course " Being made redundant is horrible, but get some perspective, looking for a job VS death. Pretty sure I know what's worse.

Not even a smidgen of fault can be laid at the door of the governments handling of the Rona?

"May be we should just go back to normal and let people now decide for them selves. I for one won't go back to normal any time soon. So let everything open sporting events, theaters, night clubs, swinging clubs, and let people take the risk if they want to it might stay empty any way. So would not be viable. But should the NHS pick up the mess if it gets really bad? " You are talking about the very economy that pays for the nhs. Like it or not, you can’t have one without the other.

Don't know persetages of GDPR and how much comes from each sector of the economy but I for 1 will not be doing anything to put me or people around me at risk. So would you also open up world wide travel as travel must be a large part of income. When I use to work in London theatres a lot of the audience where tourists?

I will also not people at risk- I followed the lockdown rules and I wear a mask in the shops. That’s not to say I’m not going to keep questioning the acts of our bumbling government though. As for travel.... I’ve never understood why we were bringing people back from China at the start of the year, when they were in quarrentine and we weren’t yet. That was the biggest outrage for me - we didn’t close our borders. Spain and Italy were both suffering terrible deaths and people were flying in and out up until the very last minute! I can’t believe what a balls up happened at the beginning of this virus. But yeah- cut an old T-shirt up, stick it on your face and we’ll all be fine!!! Sorry- went off on one there!! If we could use the testing system on incoming and outgoing passengers that sage suggested we do TWO MONTHS ago....... perhaps we could have started seeing a road to recovery. At the moment, I wouldn’t trust this government to look after a goldfish, let alone an entire country.

"But if we had locked down like NZ would we now be questioning as to why we had to do it as it was not that much of a problem.. Damed if you do damed if you don't??" I think it would have been wise to close borders and quarantine people returning from high risk countries in March. I thought that at the time and continue to think that now. Others may disagree.

"Thats where new zealand got it right NO foreign travel No extra people allowed into new zealand, in essence shut there borders cut them selves off from the rest of the world, new zealand has one of the lowest numbers of cases and deaths anywhere in the world, however they only went into a country wide lockdown for a small period of time and then fully re opened they internal economy, which has limited the negative impact of they lockdown, the uk should of shut its borders from the moment we went into lockdown and should of kept them shut till the end of 2020 ,concentrate on uk keep everyone else out, till we where certain covid was over or vacination found " close our borders u till end of 2020 and what would we have done for food ?

"How can people not see the shit storm that is coming with the economy and jobs. People keep saying health before wealth. Tell that to the millions who are going to be destitute because of this. How arethey going to find a job if there aren't any to find. Howare they going to pay their mortgage. Where will they live if they lose their house with the shortage in social housing. 5 people jumped off bridges up here in Newcastle this week alone . This is just the start." So to stop companies using loopholes to pay less tax - which let's face it most of us would pay less if we could. The only option is to change the law which my guess is that's pretty complex. Also expect the prices of everything to go up. Companies who advertise will see their advertising costs increase as Google etc will have higher tax bills so they will just increase charge to small and large business to compensate. Then some of those companies who don't pay as much tax will then also further loose revenue so again expect higher costs or poorer quality product or lower wages to compensate. Its not a case of just getting companies to pay it will have an impact on those who depend on those companies such as advertisers or sellers.

"Think retail had a big shake up online sales went mad busy Why have loads of shops paying rent rent when u can have one warehouse sending stuff out" Exactly that. I think retail will stay strong in major cities Leeds London Birmingham etc because people like the experience. Smaller towns it will just die in favour of online and shopping more occasionally in big cities.

" Sorry, I think you have misinterpreted what I was meaning there. The loopholes I was referring to were with the rules that people are skirting round when it comes to the Covid lockdown etc rather than tax loopholes. Proper adherence to these would lead to the economy being able to open sooner, safer and wider, thus allowing a greater tax take. With regards to tax avoidance, the tax system really needs a root and branch overhaul and simplification. This would leave less scope for companies to trade here yet manage to pay low or no taxes.

" the economy is screwed for a generation, Sweden took the right course " Everything about the figures we have been given have been fraudulent and wrong. We will never know how many people were listed as Covid deaths in this country, whose true cause of death was something else. The rules on classifying them were shockingly lax, and almost no post-mortems were held, so we can never check. But the Government was last week forced to admit that for some time its official death figures have been a wild overstatement of the facts. Somehow this colossal event was pushed on to inside pages and way down BBC bulletins, the UK’s total death toll has been revised down from 46,706 to 41,329, a fall of 5,377. That, as you might have noticed, is an error of more than ten per cent, a huge admission. They were forced into this by the brilliant forensic work of Professor Carl Heneghan and his brave colleagues at Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, which showed that the previous figures were so loose that they could have included car-crash victims who once tested positive for Covid. Even the fatuous Health Commissar Matt Hancock had to accept that for months, his department had been publishing bilge as if it was information. There were an estimated 1000 excess deaths from suicide in the UK between 2008 and 2010 following the last economic crash. Similar rises occurred in many other countries, especially in Europe and North America. Other research has shown that areas of England experiencing the greatest rises in unemployment experienced the largest increases in the number of suicides. The estimated increase in 1000 suicide deaths are likely to have been the tip of the iceberg of emotional distress, with possibly 30-40,000 additional suicide attempts during the first three years of the recession. A recent government paper also shows that the lockdown also caused 2 extra deaths for every three Covid-19 deaths. Ultimately it is very likely that 'the cure' will cause more deaths than the pathogen. No one seems bothered about these extra collateral deaths. Carry on killing folks.

This is baced on the death total we have but what would it have been with out lock down if it was just the up would spiral. Wife is an RMN working with people recovering from covid where some one has also lost a loved one and have servers guilt ptsd The study in The Lancet shows that the severity of the lockdown doesn't influence the death toll very much." So why did the death toll drop with lockdown or was that just a coincidence

You are talking about the very economy that pays for the nhs. Like it or not, you can’t have one without the other. And you don't have an economy if people are dead. If the mortality rate was 100% youd have a valid point." It takes much less that 100% mortality rate. For example, if you go out as a couple to a restaurant, one of you gets Covid from there and dies, is the other person likely to go back to a restaurant again? Consumer confidence also has a huge impact on whether people will use services etc within the economy. Personally, I have seen enough people already breaking lockdown rules that I am not prepared to risk a meal out. Therefore I don't put money into the economy. The fact that so many people won't wear masks means that even when I am in the office, I have no faith that people have been responsible whilst out and about, so I wear a mask even when I don't "have" to.

"Actually just read that thousands more people will die of cancer after 2500,00 urgent hospital referrals Plunged during lockdown compared with last year , and that’s just one disease what about the rest ? " What would the death toll of Covid have been without the lockdown? I don't consider anyone as expendable, but we were faced with an impossible situation.

"A short term lockdown would not have been so devastating. So you need to look at why our lockdown has been extended. The daily infections tell us that our half hearted lockdown has not been effective enough to get us to a track, trace and isolate situation. In my opinion it is the weak and indisciplined segment of the population who didn't have enough backbone to stay at home who have perpetuated the spread of this virus. The same people who are shouting the odds now. To those frontline workers who HAD to go out, who slept in their vehicles instead of going home, I salute you. Sorry it was all for naught." Thank you but it was not for naught the death rate came down and is down. Now we need to work hard to keep it down.

How arethey going to find a job if there aren't any to find. Howare they going to pay their mortgage. "It is such a shame if Debenhams go under and lots lose their jobs. They will have massive knock on’s in their lives. Any Business that goes under, is terrible. The Supermarkets killed the small village shops. Downloads killed the Music shops The internet is killing the High Street retailers . Fast food is killing Healthy eating Sticking a kid in front of a screen is killing good parenting and communication skills. It goes on and on. People have become lazy, want convenience, got selfish and just want to shift the blame, because it is easier. We all need to have a hard look at ourselves " In my opinion the high street killed the high street. How many times has the item I wanted not been in stock. 50 items displayed and only two kept in stock. Bait & switch. If I have to wait 3 days for the item to arrive in the store then I'll buy it on Amazon. These high street stores have been their own worst enemies. As for job losses. Well furlough ends in October. THEN we will be seeing job losses and thinking of now as the good old days!

"The CDC and UN have stated openly that many more people have died or become ill, and will continue to do so, as a result of lockdown measures that have been affected by the virus itself. The reality is that capitalism is using the virus to reset the economy and remove thousands of jobs by automation. If you don't believe be just try seeing a doctor - medicine has now become tele-medicine. Or consider the fact that one university lecturer will soon be able to lecture to every student in the country studying in their own home. Jobs will disappear in their millions. The following is written by the founder of the World Economic Forum. "In one form or another, social- and physical-distancing measures are likely to persist after the pandemic itself subsides, justifying the decision in many companies from different industries to accelerate automation. After a while, the enduring concerns about technological unemployment will recede as societies emphasize the need to restructure the workplace in a way that minimizes close human contact. Indeed, automation technologies are particularly well suited to a world in which human beings can’t get too close to each other or are willing to reduce their interactions. Our lingering and possibly lasting fear of being infected with a virus (COVID-19 or another) will thus speed the relentless march of automation, particularly in the fields most susceptible to automation. In 2016, two academics from Oxford University came to the conclusion that up to 86% of jobs in restaurants, 75% of jobs in retail and 59% of jobs in entertainment could be automatized by 2035. These three industries are among those the hardest hit by the pandemic and in which automating for reasons of hygiene and cleanliness will be a necessity that in turn will further accelerate the transition towards more tech and more digital. There is an additional phenomenon set to support the expansion of automation: when “economic distancing” might follow social distancing. As countries turn inward and global companies shorten their super-efficient but highly fragile supply chains, automation and robots that enable more local production, while keeping costs down, will be in great demand. The process of automation was set in motion many years ago, but the critical issue once again relates to the accelerating pace of change and transition: the pandemic will fast-forward the adoption of automation in the workplace and the introduction of more robots in our personal and professional lives. From the onset of the lockdowns, it became apparent that robots and AI were a “natural” alternative when human labour was not available. Furthermore, they were used whenever possible to reduce the health risks to human employees. At a time when physical distancing became an obligation, robots were deployed in places as different as warehouses, supermarkets and hospitals in a broad range of activities, from shelf scanning (an area in which AI has made tremendous forays) to cleaning and of course robotic delivery – a soon-to-be important component of healthcare supply chains that will in turn lead to the “contactless” delivery of groceries and other essentials. As for many other technologies that were on the distant horizon in terms of adoption (like telemedicine), businesses, consumers and public authorities are now rushing to turbocharge the speed of adoption" Spot on ..... 1984 and Orwell just keeps rushing to mind

"Debenhams is going bust due to this extended lockdown we are all living through, 14,000 people have lost they Jobs and it will affect other companies who supply them meaning more job lost. John lewis is shutting it's massive store in Birmingham too more job losses. Current covid deaths is 41,000, jobs lost nearly 100,000, it seems the medicine ( lockdown) is worse than covid , the economy is screwed for a generation, Sweden took the right course " So how many dying would you accept to justify the lockdown. Clearly 40,000 is not enough for you

"Virus forum bingo! It's another thread that covers economy over health. Day 1 of the week and my bingo card is filling. Health should be priority Health and wealth go hand I hand. There are not many healthy people in poverty. It's how we manage what we have. We are still an incredibly rich nation. Yes rich for the few. Us working class are not so rich. The top 1% of households hold 20% of household wealth. The top 5% hold 40% .... And the bottom 95% vote to keep it that way. It doesn't matter who is in government nuts. They are all self serving pigs. No they arent. Ok keep telling yourself that. Are you saying there is no difference between Bobby Kennedy and Adolf Hitler? No, both dead. The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones. I suppose looking at their respective countries it makes you question who was the most successful." It depends how you measure success. It would be interesting to see who would have handled the Covid-19 outbreak better. Boris Johnson or Adolf Hitler.

There is a difference between essential trade and opening the floodgates for all and sundry. I was advocating this type of ringfencing in February. The threads are still there. See how the idea of screening incoming people was shouted down as ludicrous. It was too "inconvenient".

In comparison, took the *wrong* course by not locking down. Due to not locking down, they have the highest death rate in Scandinavia compared to their neighbours who locked down. It didn't help their economy either. Their Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson recently warned that Sweden is facing its worst economic crisis since World War II, with GDP set to slump 7% in 2020. They have also seen a rise in unemployment since March due to Covid. Their unemployment rate of 9% remains the highest in the Nordics. By not locking down both their death rate and unemployment rates are now higher than the other Nordic / Scandinavian countries who chose to lockdown.

You are talking about the very economy that pays for the nhs. Like it or not, you can’t have one without the other. And you don't have an economy if people are dead. You do if 99.9% of them are still alive after catching it. Glad to see that you value money over the lives of those unfortunate enough to die, how about those who live but are left with lifelong issues? Even with the lockdown, we are a very long way from the NHS disappearing due to lack of funds. If people stopped trying to find loopholes or ignoring the advice or in some cases laws. Then we would end up in a much better place much quicker and could restart more of the economy much more safely. But unfortunately we have a country filled with selfish people who are not prepared to make any compromise to any part of their life for any period or of time. We are now reaping the benefits of that me me me attitude. The NHS are given 19% of the country’s tax that’s paid. " Would like your sources on that. Only 1/5 of the NI you pay goes towards the NHS in some fashion, so it be interesting where you got this 19% of government tax goes to it. If they put a fraction of what you have quoted the NHS would remove any need of a private health care system. This has been the debacle for many decades starting way back in early Labour terms of office.

We all need to have a hard look at ourselves " Pretty sure all the same arguments where made before the industrial revolution. What's the answer go back to horse and carts, using canal boats. And invading other countries in the name of the empire? Teaching kids by canning them and rope memorisation. The big tldr to the whole covid news cycle... Its Darwin, evolve or die. And sadly some people literally can not evolve, they have compromises economically or with their immune system. The government should be doing all it can for them. But they are not and they didn't at the start and won't at the end. Mankind has and forever will be evolving and changing society that's what defines us as humans. The two most recent economic events the housing bubble and dot com crash both had long last effects which changed society forever. This is no different, just don't expect a utopia to spring up out of this. It will be the same mix of fat cats and starving dogs. Just as it's always been

You talk like it's either one of the other or in every single person's case. Ridiculous. It's 41,000 deaths of mostly older non-working members of the population, versus many thousands, maybe millions, of redundancies of younger working people. That's the real choice for society.

Next thing you'll be complaining about is all the people that used to work in care homes losing their jobs cause the old people died. Jobs can be replaced, there are safety nets to help people find new ones and benefits to help them live while they do it. No it's not a good situation, but last time I checked, death isn't reversible. Try having a little compassion.

"Pisses me off that big stores say they make a loss in hard times but are still turning over millions ,there are good and bad times and you earn money and lose money in life ." just read an article from a debenhams spokesman saying the the 124 stores currently open are doing OK cashwise. They are wanting for an outright buyer to come along before the end of september. In the meantime they have approached the firm Hilco a firm which specialises in winding up retail outlets, as a back up if no buyer comes along This has got nothing to do with the virus. If they are, doing OK as they insist they are why has a winding up firm getting involved . This virus crisis has given far too many companies an excuse to restructure. This country needs to grip before there is nothing left. Another article has said that if people don't get back to work our economy will be in the gutter by this time next year from which there will be no going back from. Its wake up time Boris

"This has nothing to do with COVID , they have been losing money for years , you cannot Blame COVID for everything You don’t think that shutting down the entire country and placing pretty much everyone into financial turmoil and chaos had even a little bit of effect on people’s spending habits then? Not even a smidgen of fault can be laid at the door of the governments handling of the Rona? " These companies have outdated business models with huge operational costs. They have been badly run for decades holding onto outdated thinking giving shareholders a few scraps to appease them rather than telling them the truth. Compare to next Near East, Tesco Cherokee, George, M&S they told a very different story to shareholders in the 90s and sorted it out with tech. Spending habits change all the time , people always buy new stuff they don’t need though, especially if you male it easy and always pay their mobile bills so they can see what crap others are buying and shop online for it. Businesses that get this are growing right now.
