"Sex differential in COVID-19 mortality varies markedly by age"

The Lancet has published the above study and summises as the title suggests but due to socio-economic and cultural factors rather than biological factors.

However, purely looking at total deaths in the 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 age bands, there have been more than twice as many men than women die.

Maybe its nature balancing things out,

As in 2017/18 in England & Wales there were 50,100 excess winter deaths

Excess winter mortality was highest in females 28,100 of 50,100 or 56.1%

figures from ONS

For the 80+ age group the women have a slightly higher total of deaths but perhaps that's because there are over 700,000 more women than men.

The study's population consists of approx 194 million men to 201 million women.

Over all the age bands (starting at 0-9) deaths are 77k males, 59k females.

It's a sad but potentially reveling aspect of this virus. I've not read it yet, it will be interesting. Once men age, their lives are shorter too, I'm sure for many reasons.

There are more than twice as many deaths in the 70-79 age band 21.8k (m) and 10.9k (f) than the 60-69 years.

Then a big jump to 41k (m), 42k (f).

That's the 80+ age band

Anecdotal and unpeer reviewed evidence from our household shows that of a man and a woman who had Covid, the man got a more severe illness. Both the same age (save 9 months), neither with any co-morbidities other than the woman is a chubby chubster (me). Being a woman might have resulted in my illness being milder, but I'm sure a zillion other things did too.

The covid-19 type 2 diabetes studies are interesting regarding male deaths as well, as the coronavirus attaches to fat cells. Men store more fat around their organs so they develop type 2 at a smaller bmi level than females, as we tend to store fat under the skin.

Also bame individuals are higher risk to contract type 2 than women

Sadly I cannot reassure you as many of the deaths are the result people's own immune system going into overdrive. I have no idea of percentage.

Because men's flu is actually a real thing. Estrogen play a big role in protecting females from flu and other viruses and makes them less vurnable than males. While testosterone give us bald heads. So unfair

The total numbers in those age groups is very low, so anomalies like women with co morbidities etc will skew the data.

The data as interpreted within the study has many variables, but just looking at the older age groups, (dwindling) oestrogen cannot feasibly be suggested as what's causing women to survive. I think the poster was joking and sadly rationale took place of me
