There were an estimated 1000 excess deaths from suicide in the UK between 2008 and 2010 following the last economic crash (source University of Bristol Study). Similar rises occurred in many other countries, especially in Europe and North America. Other research has shown that areas of England experiencing the greatest rises in unemployment experienced the largest increases in the number of suicides.
The estimated increase in 1000 suicide deaths are likely to have been the tip of the iceberg of emotional distress, with possibly 30-40,000 additional suicide attempts during the first three years of the recession.
A recent government paper also shows that the lockdown also caused 2 extra deaths for every Covid-19 death. Ultimately it is very likely that 'the cure' will cause more deaths than the pathogen.
No one seems bothered about these extra collateral deaths. |

"Well it’s arrived the recession is officially arrived , Rishi Sunak warns of coming jobs catastrophe ,will this now overtake Covid as the biggest story in the next 10 years ???"
The idea that econimic collapse would happen was expressed by many as early ad february.
There are more to come.... food shortage famine power cuts all was talked about in March by many tin foil hat wearers. Some even said that the lockdown will continue till next year.
Of course they all got ridiculed.
Now look. You can blame it on those not follwoing guidelines etc etc. That would be foolish.
This is political and they want social changes. There are documents that not only support this but actually instigate this.
They reallt want people to be fearful.
Fear dictate how you live your life.
Hiv made people fear the gay man
911 you feared the brown man
Fear. Lets me honest.. are you wearing your mask because you independantly conducted your own research and concluded that masks are save or youre wearing it because someone on tv tella you to?
And will you stop wearing it when someone tv says so or will you find your own info?
If it was really dangerous to be out and about.. why they allow restaurant dining? So many incongruent and conflicting advices.
The seed of fear is now so well planted that at any moment, they can make an announcement and you'll only be able to shop during your allocated time per week.
They have made you blame those who are against the guidelines instead of you yourself finding out the information the government either do not have or withold.
Watch out for big vaccine announcement tmw.

"we didnt need tin foil hat wearers to predict a recession it was pretty obvious to anyone with a brain you cant shut down half the world and not expect one."
Its always a case the sheeps saying they knew it in hindsight.
The issue is why we didnt stop it and demand the evidence and proof back in februsru before everyone got paid to remain silent?
Shouldbt we actually demand to see the scientific papers the government is basing their decisions on?
Shouldnt ever council be given the evidence?
They are literally dictating how we are to live, behave and relate to others with penatlies if we dont comply..... the least they ought to do is to provide us with the evidence.
And yet here we are... complying wthkut ever asking for proof. Like real smart peole with brains. Right. |

It's a only a word that refers to two quarters of negative growth.
It's significance is that it suggests failure of economic or monetary policy with the political consequences that follow that is why the word is so loathed as Govt. never want to admit it.
Fact is that it had nothing to do with economics on this occasion. |

Suicides increased during 8 years of austerity but people were not arsed about it then.
Wonder why?"
I have lost 6 friends to suicide in the last 5 years because of the cuts the government has made to the mental health services and to disability benefits.
But no one cared about that. |

Sweden's economy actually grew in the first quarter. We brought this economic disaster on ourselves by over reacting. Having said that our hand was forced by France threatening to close the border if the UK didn't introduce a lockdown. France didn't want the UK to show that you could get through this without the lockdown that they had imposed on their people. |

The recession is part and parcel of the virus's impact, so will be remembered together with it.
The positive side is that our form of lockdown helped to prevent significant exponential growth in the infection levels, when numbers were doubling every 3 or 4 days or so. If we'd had no restraints on such growth rates, the impact on the country would have been much worse. We remember the scenes from Italy, 3 or 4 weeks in front of us, the UK could have been in a much worse state. We didn't lockdown to the extent that others did but may have eventually had to and for much longer than we did, if we'd just carried on as we were.
There are always choices available to us, including doing nothing. Our hospitals were getting severely stressed, we lost doctors, nurses and others, as well as devastated our care services. Those 'avoidable' losses would have been the tip of the iceberg, if we'd let the infection growth rate continue unabated. What value can be placed on human life?
Fortunately the UK is not amongst the poorest nations of the world. We are our people. We thus rightly as a nation all made significant sacrifices, committed to helping to save what's important for the country. Despite recession, we're still a hugely wealthy nation and can make choices from now that can strengthen our position, including how we structure our economy. Some stress points remain ahead, including our trading conditions with the world - those are things that we have choices for that will have significant impact on national well-being. Thankfully we have those abilities in the very short term to increase our economic resilience - we don't have to hope for a magical opportunity to land into our control. |

So I guess you haven't read the new study in the Lancet that finds:
Rapid border closures, full lockdowns, and wide-spread testing were not associated with COVID-19 mortality per million people.
Increased mortality per million was significantly associated with higher obesity prevalence.
So to sum up their findings, lots of people died in the UK because lots of people are fat in the UK and the lockdown didn't make much difference to the death rate.
What the lockdown did achieve was to stop hospitals being overwhelmed but that was no longer likely months ago. |

"There were an estimated 1000 excess deaths from suicide in the UK between 2008 and 2010 following the last economic crash (source University of Bristol Study).

Why now?" Because now people have lost jobs and as well with the benefits reform by the torys. |

"There were an estimated 1000 excess deaths from suicide in the UK between 2008 and 2010 following the last economic crash (source University of Bristol Study).
No one seems bothered about these extra collateral deaths. so as they say the operation was a success but the patient died
says it all ."

Utter fiction, the paper highlighted 16,000 deaths...
If the surplus deaths in total don’t even exceed the recorded covid deaths how would it even be possible to achieve a 2 for 1 ratio? We are talking the most basic of maths levels here. |

What social change?
We only had food shortages when morons panic buyed.
No power cuts yet.
We had a power cut last night. The mad scientists made the storm to make it happen.
**"...Sweden's economy actually grew in the first quarter..."**
-----------------
But their economy slumped when they were hit by Covid.
They assumed that by carrying on, and not going into Lockdown like other European countries did, that not locking down will save their economy - but it didn't.
Instead they have the highest death rate in Scandinavia and their economy is in trouble on top of that. So nothing gained for Sweden, - if anything they suffered a *double* loss.
Regarding the public health issue of not locking down this is what their top epidemiologist Anders Tegnell had to say:
"If we were to encounter the same illness with the same knowledge that we have today, I think our response would land somewhere in between what Sweden did and what the rest of the world has done,”
And with regards to their economy:
Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson recently warned that Sweden is facing its worst economic crisis since World War II, with GDP set to slump 7% in 2020, roughly as much as the rest of the EU. |

Hate to point this out, but people were starving to death long before covid/lockdown. Homelessness and use of foodbanks have risen drastically in the last few years because people haven't been able to afford to live. Yet suddenly, everyone is up in arms like its a new thing?

In my very small town, the local food bank was seeing up to 50-60 people/families a week who were struggling. I have a friend who works in one the next town over and she said the figures were pretty much the same with hers. Everyone I know who is responsible for working in food banks has reported a significant increase in people struggling over the last few years. |

Perhaps people on benefits pre covid were deemed scroungers, whereas now many are becoming claimants due to a global event. Most of us with half a brain know it's not as simple as that, but media programmes did highlight the worse case scenarios to portray the scrounger (underclass) class. |

There will be people dying of starvation in the UK for a fact. You'll often see emaciated elderly people who haven't been able to feed themselves sufficiently due to dementia (multi-factorial) . But we both know that poster wasn't referring to existing problems. |

With regards to Sweden they made the same mistakes we made with care homes. I read somewhere that 50% of their deaths were in care homes.
As for their economy, they rely heavily on trade with their neighbouring countries, who had locked down. I would presume if they had locked down their economic figures would have been worse. |

Malnutrition is surely linked to food.
That was my point completely

What social change?
We only had food shortages when morons panic buyed.
No power cuts yet.
We had a power cut last night. The mad scientists made the storm to make it happen.
Over reacting????? how many people do you think would have died if measures were not taken, have you seen the numbers for brazil?
So I guess you haven't read the new study in the Lancet that finds:
Rapid border closures, full lockdowns, and wide-spread testing were not associated with COVID-19 mortality per million people.
Increased mortality per million was significantly associated with higher obesity prevalence.
So to sum up their findings, lots of people died in the UK because lots of people are fat in the UK and the lockdown didn't make much difference to the death rate.
What the lockdown did achieve was to stop hospitals being overwhelmed but that was no longer likely months ago." |

Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson recently warned that Sweden is facing its worst economic crisis since World War II, with GDP set to slump 7% in 2020, roughly as much as the rest of the EU."
Sweden's gdp dropped 8.6% in the second quarter, the uk dropped 20%, Germany 10%.
During the first half of the year Sweden gdp dropped about half as much as the eu average. |
