What do you think of the governments new guidance that from today it is mandatory to wear one everywhere? I think it is good and it will as well be policed, they should of done this alot earlier. I am already wearing one, are you?

Because, in theory, restaurants are supposed to be keeping seating at fixed social distances and should (I say should) refuse to seat people together if they supply track and trace details from different addresses (unless they're in a bubble). In addition, hospitality venues are (supposed to be) enforcing distancing in bathrooms and performing cleaning on a very regular basis. You are far more likely to forget to stay 2m from Granny, especially if she looks forlorn and wants a hug or to hold your hand. In family homes, people are far less likely sanitise toilets etc after use, more likely to share a towel, whereas restaurants should be providing disposable paper towels or electric hand driers. Restaurants are cleaning tables, chairs, menus, hand rails etc frequently. How often are Granny's bannisters cleaned? And so it goes on. Whilst it feels silly, there is some rationale behind it, especially if hospitality venues are taking it seriously and doing things properly.

Never been on furlough

Worked throughout

Never social distance

Washed my hands as much as normal

Worked with the same 12 guys who have been in 100s of houses over the lockdown period.

They have never social distanced these houses apparently were either showing signs or had covid.

No masks or gloves worn

Not one family member or friend or anyone of us have had any issues

Law of averages would tell you that the amount of houses we have attended surely one of us would have getting something

Strange that isn't no doubt I wi open myself up to a whole load of abuse and alsorts but none of you can give me any sort of reason as to why I need wear a mask or anything.

There are over 46,000 reasons why you should wear a mask. It's a tiny thing to ask and it may save someone. You have no idea if you have passed anything on if you have been lucky enough to be asymptomatic.

The list of places where face coverings are required was added to yesterday, NOT today, to include 'enclosed public spaces' - which is NOT "everywhere"...

Same here we’ve not really stopped, not really socially distancing, yet people who we know have locked themselves away who’ve just remerged into the world have caught it very mildly...

Very few "additional" deaths from the normal expected deaths..

It's a farce and a massive over reaction.. Fueled by manipulated and incorrectly reported CAUSE of death figures..

4 months of this now and it's only continuing so gorvenment departments can try and save face..

If people want to stay at home, stay at home..

Those that want to return to normal should..

There's a bigger catasyrophe like looming...

Exactly this, if anyone feels concerned about their health then wear a mask and a face shield and worry about your own granny.

The argument of even if it saves one life..... then concern and effort and all the rolling of eyes you see in so many responses ought to be directed at parents with obese children and parents who smoke around children, there are risks in all aspects of life, there would be less deaths if we all drove around at 30mph, but we don't, it's all about associated risk.

I don't see many people wanting to go to a cinema if they have to wear a face covering for several hours.

Also, I think some people seem to be putting too much faith into face coverings at the expense of common sense and good judgement.

I used to work in sterile pharmaceutical production facilities. We wore the following for hours at a time:

1) Sterile scrubs (you had to undress to underwear and change)

2) Special white shoes

3) Safety goggles

4) Hair net (and snood if you had facial hair)

5) Surgical mask

6) 2x pairs sterile gloves

7) All in one space suit thingy (over scrubs)

8) Weird space boots (over the white shoes, up to your knees and tied with ribbons. Sexy)

9) The piéce de resistance. A full hood with integrated plastic visor OVER your surgical mask and safety goggles.

10) If operating the compounding machines, you ended up with a third pair of gloves (like Marigolds), via a glove box isolator.

You had to apply every single one of those items in a specific order. You could not touch the outside of ANY of the garments, masks, shoes etc to don them. You sprayed your hands with 70% isopropyl alcohol at specific points in donning process.

We had to pass a freaking exam in gowning to be allowed to work in the sterile suite. Someone with a clipboard watched you stand in your undies and scrutinised your every move and scored each garment/item of PPE you applied.

If thousands of people who make the drugs that are in your pharmacy/hospitals, make the vaccines, insulin and sterile infusions etc. can work 12hr shifts in that garb, you can sit with a mask on watching Star Wars or in Sainsbury's for half an hour.

The difference is that the production worker had no choice in the matter, the consumer does have a choice as to where to spend their leisure time. Given the choice between paying a sum of money to sit in a dark room wearing an uncomfortable piece of cloth or doing something else (streaming a program in the comfort of their own home, visiting a restaraunt or bar etc) I believe most would choose the latter.

My job of the past 7yrs involves the education of international students, often very wealthy. Many of them have been wearing face masks for years and years, including in shops, cinemas etc. They seemed to be perfectly happy with the arrangement and have, in turn, spent loads of money in the city. They come from countries where mask wear is long established. The point being is that one can get used to it. If pharma production workers can safely stand up/perch all day in all thar garb then a solitary piece of cloth on your face will become second nature soon enough. Everyone's Grandad used to sit on the prom with bloody handkerchief over their faces in the summer and seemed perfectly OK. We will become accustomed to it. Peo don't want to stay in their homes 24/7.

Peo don't want to stay in their homes 24/7."

I think the point you make is fine, if some people want to do this then why should anyone object. Although alot of what you said is based on what you do for a job, if you want to work in that field you sign up to that protocol, do your job and get paid for it. Many people don't see the added risk of not wearing a mask is proportionate in response to the death rate. If it's the overall health of the nation as a total, there are many, many more more health issues that want people's attention, that would save more lives of all ages, not just your granny! The obese man waiting outside the supermarket, mask pulled down round his neck with cigarette in one hand holding his little overweight child's hand would be a great place to start being concerned about the overall health of the nation and preventing needless deaths of all ages.

I agree that there are many other health interventions that are important, eg improving nutrition, reducing obesity etc. However, this thread is about the wearing of masks specifically, hence the focus.

It is. 99% of the masks are ineffective and as for the eyes what about them? If it was genuine reason they wouldn't be saying make your own at home or wear paper ones. THEY DO NOT WORK and say so on back of most . They will be begging for a tainted vaccine just to get rid of the mask.

Remember when they told us that it was airborne?

Did You Know: The World Health Organization does NOT recognize #airbornetransmission as route for transmission

Yet the experts in the news and government told us that it was.

If it werent for the internet... how much more lies will they get away with? How many more lies are yet to be uncovered?

The WHO has said that airborne transmission cannot be ruled out, they haven't said it isn't a route of transmission.

Same here. I am voting with my feet and staying away. Having said that this is going to kill the High Street off completely, but what can I do ? I'm not wearing a mask when I go shopping for a pair of pants or whatever. There's a deadly virus about and it's only in shops.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the reason behind it and have no objection as such, it's just a personal choice - I don't like wearing a face-covering and would rather not have to wear one, so will simply avoid places where one is required as much as I possibly can...

....especially as lots of people apparently think that face-coverings have 'replaced' social distancing, and that they can now get as up close and personal as they like in supermarket aisles, queues, etc...

You still need to cough or sneeze into your hand or elbow, droplets do pass thru a face covering quite easily.

Plenty of people gain a false sense of security wearing a face covering.

I understand staying away as it's the best social distancing there is.

But what's wrong with wearing a mask if you want a pair of pants? Are you medically unable to wear one or do you find it an infringement of your civil liberties?

Can anyone explain how it makes sense to go to the pub or a restaurant but not you're grans garden.

I'm more concerned over the blatant attack on the entertainment industry.

A lot of should and supposed to be's there. That tells me not even you believe the mental gymnastics that are performed in that explanation.

What you have all missed is in the height of the pandemic we were told not to wear face mask as they were no good against Covid19 mainly because the government missed the boat in having enough supplies of all PPE we all went to shops and most of us were ok but now we have to wear them then out of the blue it was reported that the 50 million mask the government bought were no good for the NHS so is it that the government has made them available to the market in the hope they can recover some of the wasted millions of tax payers money

Can,t see how wearing them in shops is important when in pubs & restaurants its not and cNnot understand why football was allowed to return with 22 men in close contact and then 30,000 fans all close celebrating cup or league wins.

All for one, one for all. Not exceptions for financial reasons.

I know plenty will disagree but my views are not the view of a small minority.

IN SHORT, IF YOU ARE UNWELL STAY HOME.

"What do you think of the governments new guidance that from today it is mandatory to wear one everywhere? I think it is good and it will as well be policed, they should of done this alot earlier. I am already wearing one, are you?

Surely not walking down the street it’s mandatory is it ? I’m all about wearing masks shopping etc but everywhere sounds a bit extreme no ?

Not walking down the street, no, but most indoor spaces now. yeah it’s like that here to the past week or so ! But I understand if your working with the public and your wearing them all day they are really uncomfortable ! But for the sake of putting one on while shopping etc why bitch and moan ! I don’t mean you op but there was a thread recently complaining about having to where one while shopping in tescos !!

You cant reason with dumb !

I'm happy to wear them in shops, but it has stopped me browsing and potentially buying in shops, because they are uncomfortable. Wouldn't like sitting in a cinema wearing one, so will give that a miss "

Even 30 mins getting my hair cut i can’t wait to pull the thing off ! But sure there’s still people telling me it’s all a conspiracy ffs ?? I zone out Then I go home and stick on peppa pig it’s far more informative then some of the people out there

Where did you get this news from?? I can't find any references to this new guideline on the BBC?? is this real fact?

It's been all over the news for days. Wear them indoors, so social clubs, cinemas, must etc"

The OP said ' everywhere', which is not true as it does not apply to open park areas, walking down the street etc. hence my query. I agree, with indoors, yes or areas that over crowding can not be avoided.

Yes the 'everywhere' is a bit misleading.

I think the story here was just about removing some ambiguity and potential for deliberate misinterpretation of the mask rules.

There's nothing mandatory about masks when you can just download an exempt cert, also everything said on masks is opinion only.A

big fuss over nothing. My opinion is, they are just a ploy to make the folks they have spent the last 5 months scaring shi*less. feel safer in the shops to go out and spend, spend spend

Apart from those who don’t want to wear a mask who are going to be avoiding shops. Even those who agree with wearing masks (sheeple) will probably go into shops a lot less than if the didn’t have to wear them.

I don't endorse or enforce masks in my shop. Its tiny so we limit customer numbers with ease.

The masks i've seen used over the last month have been worse than useless. If you feel the need to put one on then wear it properly, I don't know anyone who actually breathes through the chin... 50% ive seen under chins or not covering noses... why do you bother. The blue 'surgical' style masks that go over the ears, leak round the edges and if I sneezed into one it would lift off and allow air to pass freely around the sides... pointless. WW2 gas masks with appropriate filters would be more use.

But still I wear one when going into other peoples shops. out of respect to the staff and other customers. I'm not selfish. I've worked in close proximity to various people over the lockdown, sometimes you have no choice. One customer collapsed in the shop, no pulse, not breathing. You don't have time to worry about catching a virus, you do what needs to be done. He's on the mend now and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I really don't know what to believe as no one has given me a plausible explanation, its all confusion and mixed messages. When you consider the number of people in china and the far east that wear these masks (predominantly to combat pollution originally) and yet Covid 19 went through them like a dose of salts

If you want to wear one in the forlorn hope it will stop you catching a virus, good luck to you. I'll never knock you for trying. I don't think its the answer to the problem. I think we are being lied to on a massive scale. Time will tell I guess.

People have got far too used to having the former without the latter and it's now payback time.

Its news to all of us. School children over 11 are supposed to wear masks on the school bus, but that's it. Note they also have to wear them on public buses etc. Schools are not expected to have children (or staff) wearing masks at all, unless a staff member is delivering first aid.

There is some logic, actually. For a school day where staff are on site from maybe 07.30/08.00 till 16.00/17.00 at least, plus kids around 6 hrs of the day, each person would require multiple masks. No mask is designed to be worn all day or taken on/off constantly eg before and after eating. The risks of handling and disposing used/dirty masks are likely higher than the benefits of using them, especially when many of the potential usees are youngish kids, aged 11 etc, who will not remember all the steps in removing, disposing, hand washing etc. Whether that's the Govts rationale, I don't know, but that's mine as a microbiologist.

Proper masks worn, handled and disposed of properly are effective.....

"The idea of forcing children to wear masks fur 7 hours is barbaric

This is new to me ? Surely they Cant fucking expect kids to wear them things all day ? I

Its news to all of us. School children over 11 are supposed to wear masks on the school bus, but that's it. Note they also have to wear them on public buses etc. Schools are not expected to have children (or staff) wearing masks at all, unless a staff member is delivering first aid.

Where’s the thinking behind this ? And it’s spiking by the day !

Try and find any reference to it on google and you won't - it's a statement, not a news story.

Killing puppies and kittens for facemasks is terrible - true, but that isn't happening either...

When exactly are they planning on bringing the kids back in the uk September as usual? You obviously know wat your talking about but would you not want to delay it longer till it’s actually under control or do you honestly think it’s safe for staff and kids to go back to school ??? I know we’re getting hit with higher numbers over the past 3 days !

Kildare is on lockdown again

Yes, the intention is that schools in England return first week of September. Scotland go back in August (some started today I believe) and unsure on dates for Wales and NI. Our college (16+) is returning wc 14th September with a mixture of face to face and online learning but more due to our demographic than any else.

It’s not everywhere though. Just indoor places and a bunch of specifics. All on the gov website. But yeh, it’s good. We should all help each other by doing it. No whinging.

"I think we are being lied to on a massive scale. Time will tell I guess."

Lol. Oh dear. The masks won’t stop it but they do reduce the chance. Are you saying because you think it’s a conspiracy against you and your shop that you won’t even humour the rest of the U.K. public by doing it for a few months just in case? That’s irresponsible and selfish.

It builds public confidence to go back to the shops etc..wearing them rightly or wrongly is a small price to pay

But wer now taking the complete piss out of this thread ! One dude says he refuses to pay 3 pound for a mask out of principle but he’ll gladly use his boxers shorts instead ? No joke look up "

Hope they're clean. Or be a punishment for non mask wearers.

No it doesn’t. If you think that it does, you’ve misunderstood the context of your own use of the word confidence.
