I wish when things were reported they gave people more information rather than letting people worry.

Does anyone have any clearer information on what the safety issues are with these tests?

The issue appears to be that there's a CE kitemark on them but they hadn't been given approval to carry it.

When they were tested they were found not to comply with the CE requirements.

I'm only guessing here, but as the product itself is just a swab that goes in a tube, it'll be something like the possibility of the swab coming off the stick.

Yep it's a CE mark issue. The results are not being questioned and any test that have been taken but not yet processed can continue through the system as normal. They are getting replacement kits from another brand sent out to any site affected for the time being.

Randox were the private forensics testing company that were caught fiddling test results a few years ago.

They'd have been my last choice for a directly awarded contract.

Think I've had one sent me by work, had no CE mark on mine at all, I binned it weeks ago as wasn't using it because of no markings.

The randox ones have a CE mark, the query at the moment is whether they are entitled to display it. So yours was probably from a different source.

I don't think not having a CE mark is a major showstopper, it is after all just a swab and a container.

The issue is around claiming to have a CE mark when your product has never been given one and then failing to meet the appropriate standards to be given one when it was tested.

Tens of thousands of Britons had to be retested for coronavirus after the government sent their swabs to the US.

Nearly 30,000 tests were found to be invalid after being flown out following problems at a UK laboratory last month.

The 29,500 voided tests were among a batch of 67,000 sent to the US following technical issues at the privately run Randox laboratory in Northern Ireland.

It emerged last month that the government had to send 50,000 tests abroad owing to processing problems in the UK. However, it has now emerged that 17,000 more tests than previously admitted were sent to the US and that 29,500 came back void.

Samples have to be tested within 72 hours of the test being taken, which means that any delay in their processing could leave people with symptoms unsure if they have the virus.

This and only this was the issue in question.

You can't after all just say to a Bobby 'Yea it's got and MOT and exxpect him/her to say 'Errrr right then, move along. Nothing to see here'.

Smart move to the government.

Randox Laboratories were handed a completely untendered £133 million contract to conduct coronavirus tests, which have now been found to be so unreliable that care homes are being instructed to not even bother to use them.

Randox is a company that has pumped over £160,000 into the Tory party since 2010, and employs Tory MP Owen Paterson in a £100,000 per year 'advisory' position.

All added together the cash they've thrown at the Tory party is less than 0.2% of the value of the single untendered coronavirus contract the Tories handed them, which just goes to show how proportionally cheap it is to buy access to the public cash taps under this corrupt Tory government.

People with better memories of scandalous Tory outsourcing fiascos will already be familiar with Randox, after the disastrous Tory privatisation of police forensic science services back in 2012.

Randox were caught fabricating and manipulating tens of thousands of forensic science results. Dozens of people accused of drink driving had their prosecutions overturned because of this evidence tampering, hundreds of already secured convictions were jeopardised

Whilst it’s wrong to have a CE mark without approval, it’s understandable to have it if you are expecting to get the approval imminently as long as you don’t sell them until you get approval.

Given the lack of testing facilities under the conditions we currently face, is anyone seriously suggesting these test kits should have been destroyed?

Get a sense of proportion, what’s more important following EU beurocracy or testing for Covid 19?

It seems that there is more to it than the validity of the CE mark. There are also concerns around the sterility of the swabs, which are manufactured in China. So it raises a few questions.

Surely there is someone in the civil service who works in the department of health with the ability to source medical grade equipment for the NHS.

Instead we have over 130 million being given to a company to act as a middleman, who then source substandard equipment.

For the majority of people an accurate test is more important ...

Enter the reason for approval of tests ....

The test results are still being considered valid. Any tests in progress are being completed. They have just been told not to do anymore at this time.

Exactly, until such times as the test and it's components have been validated to provide an accurate test result.
