So a cross-party group instigated by March for Change as now been set up to conduct an independent pubic inquiry into the UK handling of COVID-19. They are now set to start taking the first tranche if evidence fro a variety of sources. It is now being pubicised in the national media although the crowdfunding work that got it off the ground has been in option for a few weeks.

It's behind a pay wall.

If they are genuinely going to investigate how things can be improved when (not if!) there is a second wave then -

No paywall the Guardian is free. It exists on donations. This is a grassroots supported inquiry. The MPs who are involved are from across all parties and are focused on getting it completed by the end of September so lessons can be implemented before the Winter. There will be interim reports at various points along the timeline.

The same way you can learn from any ongoing process. You don’t drive your car just using your rear view mirror. Use that data from the past, what worked and is working well, what didn’t or isn’t working and make improvements that prevent problems that occurred in the past recurring in the future.

Just be nice if they owned up to them. After all, if they don't, how can we trust them going forward?

I think many would get behind them, despite their political inclinations, if there was a clear sign of integrity.

Boris Johnson could have had a transformational moment if he had come out of hospital and recovery. Sat on his desk at home in front of of the camera. Taken off his jacket and tie and rolled up his sleeves. Then said, something like....

‘I’m sorry. This disease is horrible and I feared for my life at one stage when I was struggling to breathe. The nurses who cared for me were phenomenal and ironically were all from different parts of the world. We have made some horrendous mistakes and I know I have been party to quite a few. We seriously underestimated what was needed to deal with a pandemic like this and were complacent. Our mind was focused on trying to deliver what we have called the will of the people. But from my hospital bed I realised that that might not be the case. We have seriously underfunded the NHS and care sector for decades and as a result many more lives are now at risk. I, on behalf of my party, am truly sorry.

I know many of you voted recently in a way that our democratic process made me your Prime Minister for the next four years and I am humbled realising what that now means. My illness has taught me many things, which I will share with you over the coming months and years. But right now I want to thank you all for your support during my illness, thank the wonderful NHS staff who watched over me and looked after me with so much care and yes...love, from the bottom of my heart. I vow to serve you the citizens of this country in a new way that will help us to rebuild and transform this wonderful United Kingdom.’

And then demonstrate through consistent transparent action that he meant every word.

It's interesting and on the face of it a good thing. Depends of course on the remit of the enquiry and what agreements if any have been made on any outcomes. Im interested as well that the language used in this thread is still 'us' and 'them'... We are all in this together... And I think any enquiry needs to also name and shame any companies, individuals, activities, events that could have done better... As well as out government, opposition and public and private bodies. Let's not just make it about finger pointing at the government.... Though God knows they have made a dogs arse of some of their decision making.

Following the build up to this for the last few months through March for Change and associated sites I have a feeling they are looking at making sure no stone is left unturned.

Let's hope so. A lot of families have been, in my opinion, needlessly bereaved.

They are part of the evidence process.
