I told these people: 'Between your country and our country, mindo (the level of people) is different.' And that made them speechless and quiet.".. This was deputy pm Taro Aso speaking to the world's media on how his country dealt with COVID19. Struck me as how some of japan's leaders might be slipping into to a past ideology. An ideology they carried out during World War 2 which they justified their brutality to others who they deemed inferior and who were in their mind not as worthy as a Japanese citizen |

Higher adherence to social norms. They take their shoes off indoors, and wear masks when they have colds they've been doing this for years. I agree with Aso. No illegal street parties and flocking to the beaches like idiots for the Japanese. Sorry, I had to bite. |

I was not having a go at the Japanese for following instructions from there leaders. I was merely pointing out that for a Japanese Premier to say at a press conference of world media that the Japanese were 'mondo'. Given their past reputation this seems an insensitive and worrying |

It’s ‘Mindo’ and it’s a true concept. They’re not slipping into past ways, that’s impossible in fact. They used to believe their emperor was a god and that they were a superior race descended from gods.
That’s gone. He’s right, Japanese people do have a totally different mindset, respect and shared responsibility unity compared to all other developed nations.
It’s easy to take his words and twist them, but I think it’s clear what he meant. |

Not so much. Sometimes straight talking achieves more. What's wrong with being proud of your nation and saying it loud and proud. And.... Only have to look at the outcomes of Covid-19 so far.... UK v Japan. Or indeed Japan cf to any other nation.

"When the English dare say they are proud they get called little Englanders and want a return to the Empire.
"
Totally off topic, and also not comparable. The Japanese premier is talking about an actual real cultural thing that he believes to be the reason for their relative success in containing a virus.
He’s not randomly saying “Japanese and proud wheyyyy”. He’s saying they have a different mindset, which they do. |

I haven't been to Japan for decades, as you say it is a completely different society as ours. Lots is lost in translation, there aren't always English words to directly translate, so we have no words to explain what he is trying to say...
I'm stumped on how they have managed such low numbers, You can see a lot of what countries are doing right, and wrong, when you look at Japan, there doesn't seem to be a great deal to explain their success.

When reading it I just thought it strange mindo was used which was translated a 'different level of people' which struck me as odd as appears did the world's media who were struck silent. I don't have a problem with Japanese people or their culture. But having an ideology that you are superior to another race or human being I found worrying |

And bowing, no physical contact during normal greetings and goodbyes. This could have seriously stunted the transmission of the virus in the very early stages, before any social distancing was brought in. The Japanese almost social distance as part of normality.

That’s a mistranslation which can be taken any number of ways. Mindo is the concept of “cultural standards” or “cultural adherence” and “shared responsibility” plus some other qualities that I’m struggling to put into words. It’s not about believing anyone is superior. Every country has a level of “Mindo”. Japan are saying that their Mindo is higher. They adhere to rules more than any other developed nations, they have higher standards, they expect more of each other. Which is true.
Does higher mean better? In this scenario yes. But not always. It can have negative impacts too (as seen in their high suicide rates). It’s just an observation he made.
I love Japan. I’m in and out of that country all of the time and it’s people are the most welcoming, interesting and kind society I’ve ever known.
I think when you understand the context of what he’s saying and have witnessed it first hand (as I’m sure you must have when you were in Japan?) then it’s easier to understand without being offended. |

It's easy to take ttlhese words out of context.
And I dont disagree with everything he has said here and it also very different from comments about the British empire
But with that said...aso is also bat shit crazy and regularly makes political gaffes
In line with your post...he said Japan should take a leaf out of the Hitler's book
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-23527300
Is he criminally insane no
Is he dangerously insane probably
To many world leaders right are wannabe strong men, I'm looking forward to a rebalancing towards more centering political parties |
