Numbers come from the ONS between 14 and 17 June. 23000 random people tested to see if they have been infected or not. Somehow they worked some maths to estimate that 1 in 2200 nationwide are infected. Excluding hospitals and care homes.
More stats for stat lovers. |

thats why they reckon that about 10% of londoners have had the virus.. and about 5% of the rest of the country....
which is why the herd immunity strategy was never going to work... because you can see how much damage this thing has done when in theory so little of the population have had it so far |

Based on random testing of asymptomatic people so the ones they previously didn’t know about
That’s the point of the ONS serial testing
To estimate the prevalence in the people we don’t know about as the ones that present with symptoms and get tested, we do know about |

Or you could look at it a little less pessimistically and think that in fact a huge mountain has been made out of a molehill and that we really do need to move on, Panic is over. Lets get on with life again. It was worth being a bit careful as it could have been disease X but we really should not get too carried away. |

Yes and also you can debate about the symptoms too they have cos there is no real difference from the other flu likes such as, like fever, dry cough and tiredness. |

There is no debate they were random chosen as they had no symptoms to try and work out the community prevalence in the well ones - the ones who had symptoms and get tested weren’t in this study |

I guess the issue is.... some know folks who have had this virus and many who only see what is in the news.... Some have it and don't get any symptoms or few with it being like a cold.....next door to me all 3 had it....and one was in hospital for 7 weeks (3 on a ventilator)..... |

Indeed 5% of the population has been infected- c 43,000 dead.
Another 95% to go ...... now we can do this the easy way or the hard way.
The hard way is to plod along mitigating as we are against this virus but still allow over 500,000 die or
The easy way- sort out track and trace immediately- make reporting of cases a legal requirement and make disclosure of all contacts a legal requirement. Seek this virus out- search for the contacts of contacts- widen the net.
It’s not ‘ poke a mole’ or flatten the Sambraero - it’s Stamp this virus out.
It will allow us to return to a more normal life.
Can I see it happening - no not yet-
However- business leaders are waking up to the fact that Track and Trace is the key to the economy returning to normal- Boris and Co have about 6-8 weeks to get this sorted- otherwise he will be in trouble. |

I’m 12 miles from Bedford which is going the way of Leicester and 10 miles from MK which is going the same way.
Also a madman turned up for work with a cough today and proudly announced he had a postal test yesterday and didn’t think he had to isolate while waiting for the result.
I’m meant to be going to London on Saturday.
Might just stay at home and try to avoid being a statistics. |

It's 1 approach, though the countries with a fast ending of restrictions, before infections were controlled, such as the USA, are seeing places like Florida, Texas etc having to try to cope with big surges now. Fauci is saying 100,000 new infections per day are feasible and that they haven't managed it properly.
In some places almost half of infections are in the under 30s, with many without symptoms, who have active social lives and are passing it on to family and friends, plus strangers as they all seem fit and healthy.
From this point, with some areas having larger outbreaks, we would be well advised to be careful. |

It's concerning that people shouting out the 1 in 2000 people ignored this part that was VERY CLEARLY mentioned in the express article.
Where do you think the highest priority of PPE and quarrantine logistics have been? Oh right! It's almost as if the methods we've employed have been working to keep the population at large from spreading it to the people most at risk.

23000 random tests across all ages and ethnicities across whole country. 11 test positive so works out at one in 2200.
Down from 1 in 1700 the week before, 1 in 1200 before that.
It's the most useful stat to follow.... |

Shag mate....you didn't quite get the jist. They tested positive for covid...not they had a cough or symptoms etc. It can't be anything else. They had a swab test for THE virus. |
