I'm no Trump fan, but I'm not sure why this is a story. The first job of govt is to protect its people. It was out there and has been known to alleviate symptoms for months and the US Administration bought it. Perhaps the story should be why it is other nations governments chose not to buy it when they had the opportunity to do so.

It's a major concern, akin to the results of a war - casualties amassed in other countries.

I like the idea of other countries getting it produced as a generic and at lower cost

Because remdesivir didn't have approval. It was still going through clinical trials.

Otherwise you have a situation like the uk govement who spent 16-20 million on useless corona tests and the initial outbreak.

Spending millions a on gamble when a huge chunk of population is unemployed sounds like political disaster to me.

This is global pandemic.... Trying to land lock your country in the hope the rest of the world will burn out the disease and that this one therapeutic will protect a nation.

Shows how bigoted trump is and he doesn't have the ability to assess the big picture.

Which is true with pretty much every geopolitical negotiation he is involved in.

Some other points to note

Remdesivir is made by Gilead an American pharma company.

Had they not supplied the US government with the allocation they wanted.

Im sure trump would have enforced/bullied them into supply through the war act.

Just like he did with gm making them agree to make ventilators.

Its also worth noting a 5 day course of the drug will cost American health insurance companies $2300.

Oh and by they way.... That's the discounted price.

I'm sure this a deal that was pushed on Gilead and they accept a lower price rather than be forced to supply through the war act.

(the America health system is fucking nuts but let's not derail the topic)

Do you think most nations could afford $2300 per patient per week?

Trump may be all the things you say and a lot more besides but in this specific news infotainment article I'm not sure what he's done that is so newsworthy.

If we / others wanted the drug, they were free to purchase at the market price, as is the case in a free market.

If they didn't want it because it was too expensive then that's their choice to make.

If we didn't want it because it was still not approved by NICE, then why is there even a discussion.

I agree trump is incredibly divisive.

Do you still not understand how a virus spreads? Whilst you live through a pandemic?

You can't lock yourself in four walls and say let everyone catch it.

If trump was shrewd he understand the economy is us. Its people not named corporations, it the people inside them.

What's the use of a high share price if all the workers are dead?

And if Indias population of pharma workers is killed off. Who is going to make the drug. This is skilled work. They maybe paid peanuts but it's alot more skilled than packing parcels for Amazon in utah.

Unless some new trials come out showing it’s brilliant, and it’d be difficult to see why the previous ones missed it, we’ve already got a better drug so even if supply is everywhere we really don’t need this drug

Studies should go on about the combination- but combinations don’t always work and can turn out worse so for now it’s dexamethasone only and allow the researchers to look at the combo

I know this won't reduce the spread but it's a worldwide problem and countries should be sharing resources and helping each other out.
