Is it the end of sales/business people flying around country to country now working from home is taking off.

Or will it be business as usual?

Business as usual will be back within months. Lots of business types like to meet in person to get a 'feel' (not literally touching), for who they are doing business with.

You just don't get that over a video call.

The type of business would have a big influence too I suppose. Wine distributors would probably want to check out that far away vineyard.

Finacial markets are pretty much an on line biz nowadays.

Great question OP. Hard to see things returning to how they were. Exhibitions I think are also doomed.

I hope I’m wrong but both are easy budgets to cut and with modern technology, no longer so necessary.

Shame as I’ve flown all over Europe and the Far East for decades, met some great people and had terrific times along the way.

Oh well, nothing lasts for ever.

Why have they flourished? Sales abilities make a difference. If a computer can leverage income levels via building better relationships than remote connections, they will likely find it a worthy small investment. Very senior executives may manage their risk levels from travelling but sales and support force will likely still be deployed.

Things are restrained now but I think that within a year they will be mobile at significant levels again, once the infrastructure is in place

That should have said 'if a company...' and not 'computer'

Many Sales People carry samples of their companies wares. Holding things in your hand is good for a lot of businesses.

Many Sales People need to understand the specifications of a job hands-on.

Many Sales People see products sold into placement and hands-on the problems that arise.

Many Sales People Train staff to use the products that their company sells.

Many Sales People Cold Call.

Many Sales People Hot Call.

Many Sales People do a million things really and are not going into retirement from the road

People still prefer face to face negotiations rather than over a computer plus we can take samples ,be more descriptive and find a connection with people were selling to ,, they still prefer to know someone on a personal level to communicate with pluss i seem to do a lot more sales and more commission on the road , no idea why

I wish it wouldn't return to normal. It's great opportunity to cut down on flights. If we thought Covid was bad, climate change is gonna make it look like a blip.

Not really , I have permit to travel to 11 countries during COVID-19 and will start again in August. No point now while people in those countries are working from home.

You can’t build or sustain relationships remotely , you can do the easy / surface stuff , we’re getting better at that , but the important stuff is face to face - just like it is here

You can usually get a deal from a sales rep when they visit you.

Buy ten, get one free etc. It helps with margins. Doesn't happen with suppliers that only do telephone or online sales so much.

Many years ago I worked for a boss who said that people buy from companies as they have their reputations to uphold.

I disagreed and said in my book, people buy from people.

Usually the ones that they get along with the most and not always because they offer the cheapest deals.

So glad I have kept to that, strangely he didn't last long in the role as sales manager

People also follow the good people as they move whether that’s building your team or a supplier , which is probably the single best thing about LinkedIn.

Sales people and reps are necessary for the travel and hospitality sectors. Deals are made over lunches and dinners. For the economy we need as much of the infrastructure to return. We can’t demonstrate how things work over a Teams meeting, you can’t feel quality on a screen. I have friends who are reps but they need to train and be hands on to get the sale.

I think it will reduce.

Lots of businesses have been doing everything they need to online, saving time and money so I do think business travel will decrease.

Not a chance ,most buisiness have been working at less than half capacity without people on the road . I know ours is struggling and just about holding its head above water

I agree with you and hope it goes back to how it was. I’m old and ‘old school’ though. Younger generations are more comfortable with a keyboard and a spreadsheet than they are face to face or on the phone. And of course most buyers have got used to (and lazy) from an oversupplied world and have become spreadsheet warriors.

I doubt if it will be the death of them; but there will be a massive cull. You can't sell what people won't buy - or can't afford to, in a recession.

What we're about to go through isn't like austerity; it only fucked the poor and vulnerable over. This shit sandwich - everyone is going to have to take a bite; including salespeople.

It won't be business as usual.

I hope so. Microsoft Teams or other software instead of contributing to pollution would be nice
