Isle of man social distancing scrapped

Ramsey

After all our hard work it has been officially announced by our own local government that social distancing is no longer required from Monday 15th June.

Fab should therefore not ban anyone from the Island who is looking for local meets as our borders remain shut to the uk.

Excellent work people in keeping our little Island safe. X

No it doesn't all it proves is if you live on an Island in the middle off the ocean/sea and shut your borders completely you can avoid the virus in the short term.

Everybody else that actually requires interaction to sustain an economy and live don't have that luxury and frankly if there's no vaccine for another 2 years, neither can the Isle of Man and just like Germany that did a really good job of initially surpresing the virus, it's still there waiting to get you.

That's why it's called endemic.

Shutting the borders and doing temperature checks at airports and ports, is what we should have done. Look at Thailand. 3500 cases, 60 deaths. Tourism is suffering but everything else seems to be back to normal. Well done IOM

83,300 people on IOM v 65,000,000 on the mainland UK. I would suggest it is easier to maintain and enforce social distance measures when you population isnt in the tens of millions...and when one third of your total population live in one city/town. This isnt to denigrate what they have done, just a simple case of demographics.

We do indeed but unlike the Isle of Man who can sit and do fuck all for a few months and still maintain a semblance of an economy, we don't have that luxury, unlike the Isle of Man Heathrow had more people go through it in a day than went through the Isle of Man in three years.

Vietnam -95 million people - managed it.

Purely from an economic point of view going for eradication( or at least lowering the virus such that normal life returns for most people) is much less costly than repeated lockdowns. The UK government is not contemplating this strategy...... yet. How many more lockdowns will it take before they may think about this option?

Actually, we could have followed the NZ route... as has been said on here many times we missed the boat, we locked down way too late (as we are doing again currently)... we had the chance and missed it.

We are quoted as 1/10 of the way towards some form of herd immunity... so, another 4 years at least? That is of course if herd immunity works x

Ah yes the island or to specific the two Islands in the middle of the Pacific with a tenth of our population but twice the land mass, they don't have anything like our economy that survives on global movement and hospitality and even so are almost bankrupt anyhow with no evidence that any spike won't happen anyway if they need to open up to import stuff to eat or make a living to eat or 3000 people a month dingy in or they have a train track to the next county.

Yea let's just make out were new Zealand or Cambodia were nearly everybody works outdoors in a field, eats healthily and isn't a fat fucker or older than the current life expectancy and one problematic virus will tipple them over the edge.

I mean yea why not compare us to the ivory coast, no virus there and no fucking restrictions, why not compare us to Ghana, no masks no virus, or the Sudan or Mongolia, no virus, no masks, no lockdowns!.

Maybe our population and demographics aren't the same and maybe just maybe or economy isn't either?.

Why not just look at the infection graphs... all the countries worldwide who have ‘eradicated’ covid-19 have done so by going early, epidemiologists in the U.K. have been saying from day 1 we locked down after the point of no return... the common link between those nations that have managed a zero infection reality is they all shut down well before it and it left them with an achievable task to ‘Track and trace’.

We where always chasing shadows and sadly have been proved wrong on our delayed approach.

Merseyside & Isle of Man

Speaking as IOM residents (we own a house there and have chosen to live there since early March since just before the lockdown started) we recognise we are in a privileged position.

We are self governing and it is a relatively simple process to close our borders to non essential travel. The only exclusions are returning residents, those that have verifiable compassionate reasons for returning and key workers all of whom have to complete paperwork to prove their eligibility.

We have recently had key workers who have been brought into the Island and have broken their 14 day self isolation requirements and suffered a jail sentence of 4 weeks as a result.

We very much empathise with the terrible situation on mainland UK which is where we normally lead a very active swinging life.....as per our profile/verifications but we very much take issue with the previous contributor to this post who stated.........

"unlike the Isle of Man who can sit and do fuck all for a few months and still maintain a semblance of an economy, we don't have that luxury, unlike the Isle of Man Heathrow had more people go through it in a day than went through the Isle of Man in three years".....

We believe the IOM Government has taken a correct and proportional response to this emergency and that the residents here are now benefitting from their conformity to the strict lockdown regulations that were in force here from mid March till mid June this year.

Thank you for your support. We don't feel we should be "blamed" for being in the position we are now. It's not happened accidentally.

Nope, the IOM government has done a sterling job.

Interestingly one of my friends knows 3 welders who went over to contract there for a week who thought they’d pop into Tesco after getting off the ferry to get some beer as they couldn’t go to pubs etc... they where given their 14 day isolation to serve in prison after the Tesco staff called the police.

As you say... the system worked.

They seem to have had a system that worked for their unique population, demographic and economy, with timely decisions, that have been strictly enforced and probably most importantly, supported by their population. No idea if they have a uni or two to throw in. But of course keeping infection rates low in the community enables lots of other things to happen with low risk. Once the infections get out of control, and we then send unis and schools back... It spreads further and faster...
