The same applies to joggers panting by and running on the same path. Also, younger people not paying attention and being aggressive at some times when you look at them (as if to say....move).

Two-metre distancing is not law, so is not enforceable (in England).

Unless they are in your close proximity for 15 minutes then don't worry. Live and let live

"Unless they are in your close proximity for 15 minutes then don't worry. Live and let live "

It all depends if a copper is walking past then they will intervene and blow the 15 minutes concept out of the water.

Unfortunately you won't be seeing many coppers walking about by themselves now or even in twos.

I am pretty sure the NHS and Care workers and those suffering would probably want us all to be a caring society and follow the rules.

However, you will always get rule breakers.

To clarify I mean that where I live there are lots of country paths shared by joggers walkers and cyclists...

They are wide enough for all but some of the cyclists and joggers.. flout the social distancing.. I actually heard a jogger shouting at an elderly couple to get out of his way when all he had to do was run safely around them.. he was really rude... They moan when cars don't give them enough space. Some dorks out there that's for sure..

Is that because you keep walking into the road in front of cyclists without looking?

Or even if you walk near to the curb, it's not easy for a cyclist to stay 2 metres from you. I do prefer to stay near the centre of the road, but sometimes drivers hoot at me.

So are you going to suggest cycling should be banned for the time-being?

Or cars should be banned?

As cyclists are all fit, healthy and slim specimens, the very epitome of the low risk group, I doubt the coronavirus stands a chance against our supercharged immune systems. As a consequence there is little chance of a cyclist spreading it.

Now about that, I'm somewhat skeptical - I'm sure we'll be fine, but presumably we could harbour and spread it. Don't want to turn more irrational folks against us.

Contact your Local Council. The Cyclists aren't riding illegally - the Pedestrians are walking legally - shouting at someone isn't illegal. Only your local councillor or park warden can help you.

The Police 'really do' have other stuff to do.

There's a law about cars passsing bicycles but as far as I know there's no law about cyclists passing pedestrians other than it's illegal to cycle on a pavement unless it's part of a cycle path ?

Th vast majority of the time a cyclist on a road will be less than 2m from a pedestrian and it would be madness to swerve and possibly get hit by a car

if they are far enough away to not hit you with their handle bars (which i assume is pretty standard to avoid falling off every time they pass someone) they are not an an unsafe distance when you consider the time it takes to pass

the virus isnt in a 2m aura around you and if the auras overlap its spreads

use common sense... social distancing has just become another reason to moan

i actually read early into lockdown on comments in a newsthread that someone thought the cyclists should stay out of their village because when they cycled past their house they could be leaving a sweat trail (how sweaty were these cyclists ) that the commenters cat might then walk through and bring the virus into the house people with that level of paranoia really should just build themselves a clean panic room and never come out again

Try to do the same, not always possible, if I think there is a car behind me I won’t go into the middle of the road to avoid distancing with a pedestrian, for fear of being run over. There is always a degree of risk acceptance in every decision you take.

This thread seems to be bashing cyclists and joggers a hell of a lot when some walkers out there can be as inconsiderate as both!

On the paths where I run I always stay to the left (as you would on the road) and seems a common sense approach that the large majority simply don’t take! If everybody did so us joggers and cyclists could easily overtake at a very safe distance if we were going faster than a walker but when you have people strewn across paths sometimes it’s like attempting an Olympic slalom and becomes unavoidable to get too close.

I often wonder if people realise it isn’t just themselves using these paths and have any consideration for others

Cyclists are on the pavements in huge numbers - at time when traffic has been quieter and pavements busier.

You get people make a real effort to dance round one another on the pavement and then having to dodge bikes. It's crazy.

Totally agree with this.

As a cyclist I mainly cycle on the roads but from time to time I will hop on my local greenway which is a shared use path for cyclists, joggers, walkers etc The issue with this, even though there are clear signs saying to keep to the left (which I always have done) family’s out walking do not keep to the left or are waking in groups that take up more than half the path. Many have earphones in so can’t hear me warn them politely with my bell. So explain to me. On a SHARED path that at its widest is probably no more than 2.5 metres wide how am I meant to give someone 2 meters of room when they are the ones taking up the majority of the path and aren’t willing to move? I’m passing them quick enough that it doesn’t bother me in the fresh air but it’s these types of people that are quick to moan about cyclists and runners not giving them room. I do try and avoid these paths as much as possible but sometimes I’m out with an inexperienced cyclist so use them to get to quieter roads.

Most of the time when I am running I don't encounter people out for a walk but when I do the majority see me coming, move to the side and smile as I thank them (either nod, smile, hand etc). I'll also try and keep as far to the side as possible. If I was walking and someone else was coming the other way on a bike or running then I'd move out of their way because it's easier for me to do that.

I bet the moaners haven't been on a bike

or raised their pace above a gentle stroll for their entire adult life...

Lol wtf is this …. cyclists, runners, pedestrians are all the same community, or do we need a new protest movement for each? The only argument that surely is relevant, is if cyclists are riding on pavements in contravention of Cycling on footways (a pavement by side of a carriageway) is prohibited by Section 72 of the Highway Act 1835. If they are fair enough shout and gesticulate for them to stop. In the meantime, cyclists passing pedestrians ffs you have both got a right to be where you are......

Thankfully cyclists don't tend to 'run into' cars often, given the risks involved and differences between skin and bones and a couple of tons of metal.

I agree, as a whole they aren't showing enough due care and consideration. Plenty have passed me on the footpath when theres a lovely cycle lane for then to use at the edge of the road.

Also, I started more or less the same thread a while back and got slated for my opinion. It's a funny old world

Chippenham Malmesbury area

Where safe to do so, I always pedestrians on the other side of the road or stop and wait untill it's safe to give them 2 meters. Really hard on the country lanes I use, especially when they walk 2 abreast or in the middle of the road and, even though they can see you, they refuse to budge. One elderly couple walked side by side down the road even though there was a clear pavement.

I try not to get stressed by this any more so I don't react to them now; I just hold my breath, turn my face away from them and get pass as quickly as possible.

Yeah I possibly agree but it's just irresponsible individuals, not every cyclist acts like this. And the issue with cars is just another example of this, individuals who are incapable of not acting like inconsiderate pricks. The problem is not a cycling or driving issue.

"I have lost count of the number of cyclists I have seen passing too close to people who are out out walking. They moan about cars getting too close.. makes my blood boil

Think Bike but also Cyclists Think.

I find carrying a brush shank helps to keep them away

That would earn you a punch to the back of the neck from a cyclist doing a fair speed, if you were caught doing that to another.

Really then they need to ride away from people walking with sticks then I guess

Or it may slip in there spokes and

Maybe get some insurance if they riding in the roads which they don’t pay for

Oh jesus the old Road Tax thing

No not all about paying a road tax it’s about the liability thing to also

Wel since you mention that, they are probably covered for personal liability insurance under their household insurance premium

but you were on about them paying for the roads.

Lot of them don’t have house insurance either I bet

The twat who ran into my car didn’t even have a house

Thankfully cyclists don't tend to 'run into' cars often, given the risks involved and differences between skin and bones and a couple of tons of metal.

They do when they parked they are a pest to the paying motorist

"

They do pay for the roads as they are funded via council tax and not via "road tax" which is actually a tax on vehicle emissions hence electric cars don't pay it.

There is nothing written in law that they require insurance but if they are a member of British cycling or another cycling organization they will have a sizable liability insurance behind them.

People need to see not a pedestrian or a cyclist but a person, a loved one and just treat every one with due care and consideration as it gets dangerous labeling them as a this or a that... It dehumanises them, which is dangerous.

I'm new to this site but some of the comments being posted expressing borderline aggressive behavior towards cyclists is a little disturbing. Like cyclists are some existentialist threat to the other people in society. Surely, looking for issues for confrontation with others isn't helping anyone, just because someone has decided they are somehow dehumanised and 'different' Surely some of the people expressing these views have sufficient social behavioral skills to just walk down the road and not be subconsciously looking for a confrontation with cyclists. Even if they are two abreast in the road, it's their concern, no one else's. Christ. And aggressive driving is hugely more dangerous than someone just cycling down the road. I found that out 6 months ago when some prick, late to get somewhere nearly hit a child cycling near me. Thankfully, he just reacted and clipped the kid. I was left with 13 rib fractures, fractured sternum, cheekbones and two collapsed lungs. Just because someone was late and had a similar view. Anyway, I'm going for a ride.

Well, I guess this is a microcosm of the wider world - we're not expecting anyone to change their views on here, are we!

As someone else said, people will use anything to support whatever wise or dumb view they have. Against cycling? Well, in the age of coronavirus, they clearly can't stay two metres from everyone!

So let's just set the record straight:

Driving: causes many serious accidents and massive carbon footprint.

Cycling: causes hardly any serious accidents and tiny carbon footprint.

And the two metre thing? Obviously we all apply common sense. Yes, cyclists should try to cycle a bit further from others than they otherwise would. But unless we're going to ban either cars or cyclists, it's not going to always be possible, is it? And I know which one I'd like to reduce - with most workplaces still cosed, why the hell are there so many cars on the road anyway?!

And unless we're never going to take our young children out cycling, we're sometimes going to cycle on the pavement.

And intuitively, spending an hour indoors in Tesco has to be riskier than going within a metre of a moving cyclist.

And that person who was almost hit by a cyclist last night - I was cycling atowards a group of pedestrians crossing the road recently. Most went at a normal pace and finished crossing a fair while before my arrival. The last looked at me as she sauntered across the road on her phone. I had to slow down and veer to the right. And then one of the guys shouted at me. But I was about 50 metres away by that time and just carried on going.

But why even am I wasting my time writing this? I've work and homeschooling to do!

Cyclists are more likely to be breathing in than out in the fraction of a second they pass you so actually its not likely to be a big risk. When i go out for an exercise walk i deliberately try to keep 2 m from anyone I encounter. I have been caught out by people sitting with the window open in whatI thought were empty parked cars and vans. And i do get annoyed if when i see people coming towards me strolling down the middle of the pavement who when i move far away in one direction they dont bother moving in the oposite direction and just hog the pavement. I have then had to step onto the road to maintain 2m because I expect those are the sort of lazy cunts who will ignore any restrictions and be thev cause of a second wave .

But in the case of cyclists, you can tell from most of the "anti" comments, it's because of the cyclists own actions, that's not comparable to a skin colour or religion.

There are good cyclists, of cause but how often have you been stuck in a 20 car queue travelling at 10 miles per hour because a cyclist refuses to let traffic past or having to slam on the brakes while turning left because a cyclist decides to undertake.

Actions like that are otally avoidable and only serve to give cyclists a bad name.

I was replying to that specific formulation - many people are bigotted towards cyclists, and not because of their specific actions.

It's not racism, no. But the previous poster had made an anology.

Also as to that other comment - short of the cyclist deciding to hang up their bicycle, what choice do they have other than slow down cars on the narrow roads?

And as to slowing the roads down - I'm pretty certain that overall cars slow the roads down far more than cyclists? They also cut me up pretty frequently, e.g. by overtaking a few metres before a left turn and then turning forcing me to turn with them.

How many times have you been stuck behind a tractor doing 10 miles and hour and not letting anyone past? People seem quite happy for that to happen. Cyclists, tractors and lots of other forms of transport are perfectly entitled to be on the road and drive/ride at a slower speed than others. How many car drivers have caused me to slam on my brakes when driving? Or done other totally avoidable actions? Plenty.

So my point is there are bad cyclists and bad motorists but somehow bad drivers don't give motorists a bad name! Why should bad cyclists give cyclists a bad name?

I thought it was ratio of virus to infect people, and as it below 1 you have a very slim chance of catching a virus from a cyclist passing a pedestrian. You could all go ooh them dog walkers the joggers it go on forever.

Now if you have a group of seven pedestrians and the cyclist ride through the group well now you have a problem.

Courtesy to others, I ride on paths sometimes but I giveway to pedestrian as its there right of way.

Given that the vast majority of cyclists don't hit the speeds even once in their cycling life that the vast majority of drivers are travelling at when turning left, I would say this is extremely rare. Except where traffic is stopped or exceptionally slow so no brake slamming required and in which case all training is to check mirrors anyway. I've seen innumerous overtakes by drivers followed by sudden hook left manouvers by car drivers though.

With regards to queues, they have no obligation to stop and pull dangerously between cars and other obstructions to let cars past.

I both drive and cycle and have never in 80,000 miles had an issue overtaking a cyclist safely.

"Something I've noticed on this thread... Don't you dare have an opinion on cycling other than that they are demigods and holier than thou and cannot do anything wrong. If you do then you clearly are a troll and just a mere mortal and have no right to complain."

Strange that as a cyclist all I’ve noticed is the amount of drivers who want to run all of us off the road.

tbh i cycle so occasionally that when i do it i have to hire one of the street bikes ... i read the thread as more of an example that much like anything else, a few crappy people have somehow given a whole group a bad name and also that people in both a car or on foot seem to hate sharing space with them .., its almost as if we should have more dedicated cycle lanes
