"With the social distancing going out the window, how long for the r number to rise to 1+?"

Hard to say it will be a few weeks before that works through and there may be other factors such as seasonal decline, possible short term immunity and vulnerable people keeping themselves isolated.

I don't think the government cares about R as much as the NHS not being overrun given that most people have mild symptoms.

Well I for one hope it goes down further, sick of the negativity it is causing and the severe lack of positive thoughts lately. Yes granted there has been the idiots that have flaunted it no one is perfect.

We all want it to go down but the track record of how things have been done at each stage gives no confidence in much to have been very different. It would defy logic. The possible saving grace for official figures may be that regional areas may be so large that mean averages in them may stay below 1, though some places inside may be above. Some of the public also seems quite forgetful, not holding officials to account, being more dazzled by the prospect of getting IKEA or other shopping trips done so that they can think that they are stopping an economy fall from turning the UK into the poorest country of the world.

The protests were for a reason but the people who were doing were asked not to by the health secretary who he himself was advised by his scientific advisers not to do so because of a virus that is very contagious between humans in close contact, so what do people do stand side by side cause criminal damgage hurl objects at police while stood side by side.

Yes stupid people very stupid people

There’s been a number of peaceful protests in the country and again the media has made them to look worse than they are. I never said I agreed with the people who are causing violence and riots .

However people protesting against something that is fundamentally wrong in the world is not stupid. Yes because of covid it might not be seen as the right time , but if not now when will there ever be change .

I saw the footage where the statue was chucked in the docks at Bristol. That was more of a protest for change.

I'm sure I heard something about it already being above 1 in some areas.

Apparently the north west. Of course the north west is a big area. Cheshire is part of it . Cheshire East with a population of 380,000 had 2 new cases over the weekend and claim their R rate is around 0.5.

Pretty sure Merseyside is, as the council's delayed partial school reopening based on a high r rate

Black lives matter! Racism needs to expire. It's right that people are allowed to Democnstrate in a democracy. Several thousand people are currently infected in the UK every day, whilst we open shops, schools etc

R number means the number of people catching the virus, but if death rate keeps falling then R rate means nothing. If no vulnerable are catching it death rates fall.
