And what the media say is gospel then

Really??

Its common sense that if you starve a virus of a host it will die off far more quickly.

That's not rocket science, just common sense.

Oh yes, you are talking about the media, like many, they dont posses any!!

Lockdown worked here. We obeyed it, banged up those who broke it, no new cases in 10 days & only 3 left active to clear. Restrictions being lifted each week in a sensible manner. Keeping our borders shut for as long as it takes because of the complete selfish mess the UK government & it's citizens have gotten into by going crazy in the sun. Thankfully the clever uk scientists are now managing to escape from being blamed by Boris as they avoid having the blame being dumped on them & dump it back on the gov.

Our own government here has done a great job doing its own policy.

Yes but the government wasn't expecting 100% of people to stick to the rules, they would have factored in people breaking the rules before they were announced.

The really dangerous time for this was just before and as the lockdown started, when the numbers of people infected were doubling every 2 or 3 days, during its exponential growth.

We're at a different point now, with fewer people who have it who can infect others.

I'm fairly confident that our lockdown reduced the crisis levels to our current lower levels. If the op can clarify how it didn't, that would be helpful. We should have had an earlier lockdown, which calculations show could have reduced deaths by around 20,000. The hospital and care home deaths could have been reduced if we'd been intelligent, providing equipment, resources and not chosen to ignore the problems

Having very little faith in ANY government. And also people's nature in general!!! Im just hoping that all our restricted behaviour has done some good? Being in a vulnerable group I've been avoiding everyone for ages now but have noticed some younger people on my rare outings that the youngsters do seem to be ignoring the rules quite often. Fortunately they haven't been near me. I've been lucky having had a very contentious daughter keeping me supplied with essentials so I am hoping we'll all be able to get back to some sort of 'normal' soon? Good luck everyone who is fit and able and can fight off this virus independently.

Lockdown works before lockdown r was about 4 now 0.8 ish.

What they won't or can't tell you is for how long.

If r is less than 0.9 you will have to stay in lockdown for about 10 years or r will automatically rise.

So yes lockdown works just like baning cars stops people getting run over?

I went for a walk up Worstershire Beacon (Malvern) the other day. The "group" around the trig point taking selfies certainly weren't from one household....about 15 of them in a scrum... ridiculous. No wonder the R number isn't coming down much.

There's big assumption in there

Maybe none of them were infected ?

Statistically none would have been, were you infecting them ?

And hasn't provided any further details or evidence, other than a link to a site that 99% can't access.

He doesn't explain how the UK infection rates dropped after the lockdown started. I'm guessing that it's not a mysterious coincidence

Heaven in the Midlands

It all depends on whether you think the lockdown is to starve the virus of a host, thereby killing it. Or you realise lockdown is to slow the spread to enable hospitals (intensive care, staff, equipment) to cope with the number of sick at any given time.

"Seems to have worked in other countries. Look at NZ for example."

If you implement an extremely strict lockdown before the virus has a chance to become established within a population AND combine that with measures to prevent imported cases AND you are prepared to enforce and sustain the lockdown long enough then yes, you can eradictae the virus that way.

That is what NZ did, helped by low density of population and island status.

The UK has the island status but also has a high to very high density of population, especially in SE England.

We did not impose a strict lockdown and border closure when there were very few cases, thus allowing the disease to become established within the population. That was a political decision.

Once the disease is established, lockdown as an eradication tool is useless. There is simply no way at that stage in any democracy that you could implement a lockdown to the level required to eradicate the disease completely. Therfor the only purpose of a lockdown is to delay the spread of the disease to mitigate the immediate impact on medical services.

Some believe this strategy is pointless and that the eventual number of deaths form Covid will be largely the same with or without the lockdowns.

It's even possible the damage, disruption and socioeconomic impact of lockdown may in fact prove more harmful than allowing the disease to run it's natural course. (I stress this is contentious and no scientific concensus exists at present.)

For those interested in the actual science & not the press interpritation of it, both the Lancet and the BMJ have made all coronavirus content freely available for the duration of the pandemic.

The article the Telegraph seem to be referencing is here : https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31035-7/fulltext
