Yes we think so.
Here in France we went shopping in the big city and everyone wearing them so it’s protect me protect you.
Watch the news from the UK and only a few wearing them therefore it’s just those wearing them protecting others.

"They don’t work and I was told that by a nurse. "
It's a they do and they don't..
Medical grade . clearly do..but if Joe Public have poor hand hygiene..that undermines them..
If your talking about the non medical grade...well yes they aren't done enough to stop the virus.,but they are effective at reducing the chance..
I heard and analogy...of firing an arrow into a wood..the trees being the fibers..they's a chance of a tree blocking the arrow from hitting it's target..open space (no mask)... nothing stopping it.. |

They stop other people catching it but I could catch it through them. The answer is social distancing and hand sanitising.
I’ll pass on the mask thank you. I’ve coped fine so far. |

Advice is for a face covering in places you cannot social distance in, public transport for instance, close aisles in shops etc.
Everyone should do what they feel comfortable with as it provides mental comfort to some to wear them and shopping is stressful enough in itself for many people |

The number of people out and about will be increasing. Social distancing is not always possible. A face covering (not a surgical mask leave them for the professionals that need them), together with good hand hygiene is a sensible precaution. |

The best mask is known as an 'FFP3' and to be effective, it must be'fit tested', i.e. it must provide a seal (more like a close fit than a proper 'seal' in reality) around the edges of the mask. This is why some HCPs with beards have been shaving them off. The other alternative is the full HazMat head gear, which let's face it is reasonably impractical for the general public out and about, though does have the benefit of frightening children and grannies |

local, but not too local |
I feel it’s becoming a social nicety. If it lessens the risk of me inadvertently infecting others then I’m happy to do it.
At the minute it feels more like making a statement, though. So I’m on board, but looking to see what everyone else is doing. |

But in reality if we all wore a paper mask in confined spaces. It would cut the infection rate down by 65 to 90%.
I think they should be made compulsory in any confined area...even if it just the cut out socks that Lee made on gogglebox. |

We are all of the understanding I hope that face masks are to protect other people from you and not you from other people. It’s if you sneeze or cough you are likely to trap the majority of your particles inside your own face covering. So wearing yours does nothing to protect you but me wearing mine does protect you. |

I won't wear one unless the government make it compulsory.
I can't handle anything on my face. I would keep touching it, which then puts me at more risk.
I stay away from other people and wash my hands. Most people in my town are being pretty sensible when it comes to social distancing. So I plan to wait and see what happens.
(I am also about 95% sure that my family has already had it, so there's also that) |

That was the original thinking but post lockdown things have changed , more people are about that’s why so many countries now require them to work by law |

"Should we all be wearing them? No they will trap germs"
Surely a mask will prevent the wearer from spreading the virus when coughing and sneezing.
I saw them saying on the news last night that the UK said a mask coikd trap germs on the outside after someone else coughs.. But if someone coughed in my face and I wasn't wearing a mask it's going to go direct to my face anyway.
So I think just wear a mask and change them or spray with Dettol or something and then leave for awhile before using again. |

The virus rides on water droplets in an airborne scenario. Take a small sip of water and blow it out of your mouth. Now do the same with a teatowel over your mouth.
Something not being 100% effective at stopping the virus isn't a reason to not use it. Wash your hands, wear a mask, don't touch your face and you'll reduce the risk of transmission to yourself and others significantly. |

The WHO doesn't recommend wearing them except in specific circumstances
It is more to stop those that are infected infecting others not to stop the wearer catching anything - the virus can enter the human body via the eyes not just the mouth and nose |

Seasonal Flu is just as dangerous to the vulnerable, so why are we not advised to wear them every outbreak? if they are effective in stopping you passing on the virus ?? |

A few responses saying face masks should be compulsory, at the moment the worldwide demand for all PPE is huge there is no way that we could have enough masks for everyone! Any PPE that is of any good is reserved for the NHS which is right. |

The post does say face masks, I've seen people with scarves and all sorts wrapped around they're face surely if these are not washed straight after exposure and handled with gloves you are defeating the object. |

I have a thick weave non medical grade mask. I create a seal around mouth and nose, don't touch, and take off by the ear straps once home, straight into the washing machine.
Is it as effective as PPE? No. Might it do something? Yes, it likely will. In conjunction with physical distancing and hand washing.
I wouldn't take medical grade masks from those with greater need than mine, but I can do something to reduce my risk to myself and others |

why not?
if companies are selling proper grade masks, why not protect yourself?
.
those working for NHS and care homes have their own supplies and their employers MUST provide protection
so why will you not protect yourself if you get the chance? |

Because shortages will do those people more harm than they'll do me on my one shop a week staying away from people as best I can. It's all about compromise. |

Because most of us are not trained in correct use and wouldnt be following ppe procedures....
Face coverings for us arent meant to stop us getting it. And remember we are not going to be up close and personal with a stranger who has it..
Face coverings are encouraged to stop it spreading if you have it and dont know. Although they do reduce your risks of catching it while out and about. |

Because you may contaminate the surfaces of your car if you remove it. Better to drive home and remove it to the bin or if reusable to your safe place for storage. |

I wear one when I’m in food shops... my thinking is why not...it keeps you focussed on the task at hand stops me touching my face. I have a strict routine developed now and have a small covid kit that I carry ( gloves mask reading glasses small anti bac spritz, wipes and a little coin for the trolley). I amazed at how many people go mask back or even worse don’t wear them properly. I would like a 2 meter telescopic stick that I can gently poke numpties with that get too close as a vast majority in my area literally have no idea or could care less it seems |

But you have to touch it to remove it and then stuff it into a bag - still better I think to do that at home. |

I find that the oddest thing - particularly Sainsbury's - is that they have bottles of anti bacterial spray with blue paper towel on tables outside the shop that you can spray on the paper and then wipe the handle of your trolley or basket. About half of the people I see are not wearing gloves, pick the bottle up spray it on the towel, wipe the trolley handle or basket handle then put it back on the table for the next person to pick up with their bare hands. |

I wore one today, a 3M one from my boyfriend who has to wear them when he working in those environments.....awful. Was out doing errands for an hour or so. Claustrophobic. Sweaty. Stifling. I cannot imagine wearing one for hours and hours. Much respect to those who have to wear PPE. But if it's necessary, the new normal as it were...then so be it. |
