So we have had wash your hands whilst singing happy birthday twice as a slogan, Stay at home. And now stay alert.

So can we beat this with a new slogan now and then.

Your thoughts?

It’s means you can go out, but look where you’re going and don’t do what Boris did and shake peoples hands in hospitals and end up on a ventilator , the plonker.

Here's two reponses I enjoyed:

"Is Coronavirus sneaking around in a fake moustache and glasses? If we drop our guard, will it slip us a Micky Finn? What the hell is 'stay alert' supposed to mean?" - JK Rowling

"Stay alert? It's a deadly virus not a zebra crossing." - Dave Ward

I think it's because you can't really have a government slogan that says "Don't be a selfish twat" which is what it boils down to.

my thoughts... i have a few!!!

1) the government were given a great deal of latitude and understanding by the public... they have really balls'd up the message and the messaging

2) whoever's idea it was to brief the press earlier on this week on what was coming should be sacked!!! the media ran with it but then had to draw it back! it has messed up the messaging to the point of "WTF"!!!

3) the government said it would be a "4 nations" approach.... apparently the gov forgot to consult edinburgh, cardiff and belfast!...

so basically the message for scotland, wales and northern ireland will remain the same according to their administrations, but england will gun ho on its own! (sound familiar???)

4) whoever designed the new poster should be sacked alongside the person who approved the briefing!!! seriously... stay alert to what!!!!

5) in the states its got the point where more people believe and trust the Andrew Cuomo New York State briefing in general than Trump's whitehouse daily briefing......

its got to the point where I am way more inclined to believe and listen to Nicola Sturgeon Scottish Government C-19 briefing, than i am whoever does the Westminster briefing...

People really are obsessing over a few words and finding hidden meaning where there really isn't any.

I read 'STAY ALERT' to mean:

Keep up my social distancing.

Watch what I touch when out and about.

Keep washing my hands when appropriate.

Wear a mask and gloves.

etc etc etc.

That will keep me from the virus as best as I can. Let's face it we all are getting out more and we will get out even more as time passes STAY ALERT is the proper mantra for this transitional stage.

STAY ALERT clearly reminds me that I am responsible for my own safety. I have been wearing masks and gloves since day one - I too wonder why others don't - but I can't be responsible for others I can only be responsible for me and those closest to me were I have influence.

ALERT - quick to notice any unusual and potentially dangerous or difficult circumstances; vigilant.

So be quick to notice you are at work. Not at home. Realise that the fact that you are not at is dangerous, never mind potentially. Circumstances may in fact be very difficult, consider the door handle.... previously a convenient mechanism, now an instrument of death.

I think a better slogan would have been.

"Stop picking your nose and biting your fingernails while you're shopping"

A slogan which our local store should keep up even after Covid.

Personally I think it’s a pretty lame slogan and even worse banner but the message is more than clear. To me it means we’ve given up on telling people to stay at home all the time as socially and economically we’ve proved it’s just not doable. So, things are opening up slowly... but you still need to follow the rules and keep your distance. There’s a virus out there so be conscious of that at all times. In other words - be alert.

I know exactly what stay alert means. Two short, simple words.

Aparently journalists (majority with an English degree) don't understand or just want to make mischief....I wonder how many of them post on here...?

People, journalists, opposition politicians have been asking for a "roadmap" of the route forward for weeks. Now we might be getting one all they can do is criticise....seems just can't win!!

it's done as far as the government see it .. 'party line ' is all about safety etc but they /we are backed into a corner .. there is no money left to keep allowing people to do nothing all day ( surely people cant expect to 'furlough' indefinitely?) and the economy needs to start again becase it needs out taxes ( and they are going to be a lot higher soon for everyone btw!) ..people need to go back to work and things need to move to get the economy going.

On a side note, all the jobs being lost is bad news for everyone , however, there are thousands of farms out there at the moment who are desperate for staff to lift and pick the crops before they rot . We dont have any Eeast european/migrant workers this year so maybe it is about time we did it ourselves ? not rthinking the job was 'below ' us maybe? .. Realistically with this situation we should not have anyone claiming dole if they can work . Due to the curent state of things people need to be made rto take any job that they can do .. even just for the short term so that will help out the economy and cut down on a small amout of government benefirt payments too .. others wont be so lucky though to get a job and this will be really tough times for some .. bottom line .. we have nothing coming in as a country economically speaking and everything to do with money going out of the public purse .. and whilst we are doing that other countries .. China in particular are over the virus that originated from there and are boosting their economy to become arguably the most cash rich/ prosperous country in the world by Christmas .. ironic isn't it !

"The incompetence of this Tory government is staggering. “Stay Alert”. Really, to a virus measuring 0.0001 millimetres in diameter, good lucky with that. No wonder we have the highest death rate in Europe!!!

I can’t wait to hear the bumbling baffoon Boris try and explain what ‘stay alert ‘ means later , let’s hope it involves not shaking hands with people with the virus . "

well he wont be asked about it by the press because apparently no briefing today and the message has been pre-recorded... so the only people who are going to be asked about it were those who did the sunday morning shows!

i assume he is going to make a statement about it in parliament tomorrow.. in which case thats were he could start getting some backlash...

it will interesting to see what the reaction is in the papers.. because i think if the reaction is really negative, they will draw back whatever the government wants to do!

It’s all a bit silly isn’t it , garden centres are still not allowed to open unless they sell animal food, even then they follow the rules correctly and make you buy straw you don't want first, if you want a tree or a water feature.... meanwhile yesterday Morrison’s practically built one in the car park and there was a 2hour queue to get in it - no rules just buy what you want.

It is a pointless and ambiguous slogan

But how so?

People are going back to work - so you can't tell them to STAY AT HOME but you can tell them to STAY ALERT.

More shops are opening which means the public are going to shop more which will mean that they are out more so while the are not at home - they should STAY ALERT to the potential dangers.

etc.

How?

Millions of people have been shopping throughout the lock down . Some wear masks, some dont? Who is correct ? Stay alert is ambiguous as it takes the responsibility away from the government and onto the individual. Will they tell us all to wear gloves and masks tonight? Will they say that we can visit friends and family? Will they tell us we can go back to work ? Or will Boris just keep saying ‘stay alert ‘

STAY ALERT clearly reminds me that I am responsible for my own safety. I have been wearing masks and gloves since day one - I too wonder why others don't - but I can't be responsible for others I can only be responsible for me and those closest to me were I have influence.

When we hear the pre-recorded message then we will know what he has said we can do. "

"So we have had wash your hands whilst singing happy birthday twice as a slogan, Stay at home. And now stay alert.

So can we beat this with a new slogan now and then.

Your thoughts?

my thoughts... i have a few!!!

5 But Trump is the president, why wouldn't people believe him? He is the Leader."

I tried following Trump, I really did. But bleach isn't the aquired taste he said it was. I STAY ALERT by avoiding those cancer causing buzzing windmills.

I'm sure the poster means the highest charted death toll, not that I've watched the briefings the last couple of days. It's not a simple fact when we cannot directly compare numbers: percentage of population, density of population, demographics.

I have no idea why it is recorded. I would have gone for 'live' as it would seem to be more sincere and also open to questions with regard to clarity.

With regard to mixed messages - it's really up to individuals to make the connection themselves, some people will never listen regardless of the message.

I watched a woman and child in a Sainburys queue wearing mask and gloves only to pull it down to smoke a cigarette then when it was her turn to go into the store she took off her gloves to pick up a basket !!! She was clearly mixing up all her own plans for personal safety.

People do strange things - but simple reminders help many more!

Asked why Belgium has a higher death rate....

"He has a firm theory on why Belgium's death rate is so high compared to other countries - greater transparency.

He said: "We record everything. Deaths everywhere, not just in hospitals."

And that includes deaths suspected to be from COVID but not actually tested. More of those deaths are in care homes"

So we probably do have a higher death rate but we will never know because we fudge the numbers.

At a time when our official death toll was 16 000 the FT calculated it to actually be 41 000.

West Wales and Cardiff

People from England have been very good about not coming to the tourist honeypots of Wales. Well, except for a minority of idiots (there’s been some Welsh idiots going to these places too, of course).

What the hell is going to happen now? Most people in England (pretty understandably given how the media works) won’t realise that the Senedd guidelines haven’t changed.

I’m glad the Senedd are sticking to the stricter policy - no quibble with Drakeford on this, as the priority must be to do what they think is best for the people they govern.

I fear a real breakdown in the handling of this and rising tensions between police and the public.

There are two different concepts. Currently daily mortality rate and mean mortality over a given period. Belgium has 8,656 total deaths vs our 31,587.

I'm inclined to say. Government STOP making this pandemic OUR responsibility and get your own house in order. Get the amount of testing done that you promised us because that is proven to be THE most effective way of fighting this pandemic.

All the alertness in the world isn't going to help without those tests!

I agree, they promised 100,000 tests a day, that has only been achieved once . This new stay alert is very vague and will lead to confusion, I expect the parks and re opened shops to be very busy

A slogan is meant to be short , memorable and straight to the point . If it is ambiguous then it is pointless . I agree that tonight’s ‘plan’ should help but I find it pathetic that it is being prerecorded and Boris won’t be answering any questions

Seems perfectly acceptable cause of action to take

My concern is some people could not work out what stay at home meant. The stay alert message will tip them over the edge

Most people understood stay at home just fine, they were just choosing to ignore it ... there is no getting through to that demographic

And those that can’t understand it, well would matter what you tell them no getting through to them either

You have to pitch things at the majority of sensible people, seems though we are all too smart for our own good so just want to over read into it for lots of extra hidden meaning

"

Yes maybe it's more ignoring but if they daft enough to do that then no instruction will help

This week some people travelled to the coast and ended up having to be rescued as they got cut of by the tide. Rescue boats and a helicopter had to be used. Its hard to help when people do not take responsibility for themselves

You are talking about advertising slogans, that will have taken years to develop and millions of pounds worth of advertising so completely different . Why do they have to change the slogan at this stage? The original message was a good one . Stay home ? Can that be confusing? Protect the NHS? Is that confusing? Stay alert? What does that mean exactly ? What does ‘stay at home as much as possible ‘ actually mean, can we see friends and family or not ? Can we go to the park or not?

Tell you what you answer my question as I asked first and as sweden are beginning to feel they are getting close to in some areas 80% is what is needed and every country in the world will have to get to before its safer for the vulnerable to come out of isolation. With more and more mutations being claimed a vaccine will only offer limited protection just as the yearly flu one does, herd immunity is the only way, always has been always will be just as it is with every virus, we can hope one vaccine can create it in six months, but dont hold your breath.

The fact you cant admit you were wrong claiming we have the highest rate is pretty sad

I did the calculation for herd immunity on this forum a couple of weeks ago. Given the increased testing and a higher accuracy of infected numbers at this rate we should achieve 80% in 37 years.

We all have different circumstances and therefore want different things. Whilst we aren't affected , we need to get people safely back to work, for their benefit and the country. I would like to take my 90 year old Dad out again, but know that won't happen anytime soon. We all know what we should be doing now, without any slogans, to protect ourselves and others.

https://www.healthline.com/health/hypervigilance

"Hypervigilance is a state of increased alertness. If you’re in a state of hypervigilance, you’re extremely sensitive to your surroundings. It can make you feel like you’re alert to any hidden dangers, whether from other people or the environment.

These can all cause your brain and your body to constantly be on high alert. Hypervigilance can have a negative effect on your life. It can affect how you interact with and view others, or it may encourage paranoia."

I prefer Trump's slogan "Drinka Pimta Bleacha day!" Sounds healthier

It is exactly what sweden is doing openly and plainly, other countries are doing the same but quietly because all the clever folks in the media dont, cant or wont understand the reality of how we have to deal with this virus so try to make governments look like they dont give a shit about how many die.

The ONLY reason for lockdowns in every country in the world is to slow the spread of the initial infection to allow health services to cope, Italian health services were swamped, we haven't been, the hard part is now knowing how to release the lockdown to allow the virus to spread at a rate that allows the NHS to treat those who need treatment and allow the economy to function and pay the taxes to cover the nhs etc.

I note you have never answered my question how the country can survive lockdown until a vaccine might happen, divorces and mental health issues will make the 1 percent death rate from covid look small in comparison, that's not to dismiss a single death but the government's job is to balance the risk and benefits of its actions, it's easy to sit on the outside criticising, well what would you do ?

With more and more mutations being claimed a vaccine will only offer limited protection just as the yearly flu one does, herd immunity is the only way, always has been always will be just as it is with every virus, we can hope one vaccine can create it in six months, but dont hold your breath.

The fact you cant admit you were wrong claiming we have the highest rate is pretty sad

Yes, I got the word rate and toll mixed up , I made a mistake . Imagine thinking that it is a good idea to infect 53 million people in the U.K. with the virus in 6 months though ? Or even 6.2 billion world wide.

I note you have never answered my question how the country can survive lockdown until a vaccine might happen, divorces and mental health issues will make the 1 percent death rate from covid look small in comparison, that's not to dismiss a single death but the government's job is to balance the risk and benefits of its actions, it's easy to sit on the outside criticising, well what would you do ?"

But 12 weeks ago you said COVID-19 was exactly like the flu. When I asked if you had changed your stance you didn't answer the question. Perhaps you missed it.

Have you changed your stance on that?

To discus the difference between England and Sweden one might look at Adam and Eva the club in Norrköping, Sweden has bowls in every room filled with codoms. Something I've never seen in an English club. It shows a difference in mentality. The Swedish people didn't need to be told not to be stupid.

Another difference is that biological differences seem to have a huge impact on COVID-19 mortality. Austria has such a low mortality rate scientists are trying to work out why.

"So we have had wash your hands whilst singing happy birthday twice as a slogan, Stay at home. And now stay alert.

So can we beat this with a new slogan now and then.

Your thoughts?

Morning And what does it even mean?

Here's two reponses I enjoyed:

"Is Coronavirus sneaking around in a fake moustache and glasses? If we drop our guard, will it slip us a Micky Finn? What the hell is 'stay alert' supposed to mean?" - JK Rowling

"Stay alert? It's a deadly virus not a zebra crossing." - Dave Ward

I think it's because you can't really have a government slogan that says "Don't be a selfish twat" which is what it boils down to."

"I'm inclined to say.

This new stay alert is very vague and will lead to confusion, I expect the parks and re opened shops to be very busy "

Now to be fair it's not the government's fault they're not meeting their own testing targets. I'm reliably informed it's the general publics fault for not going to get tested. What was so special about the 30th & 1st that made people want to get I have no idea.

Exactly. You have to compare apples with apples.

If we should be compared to any country then Germany with a population of 80 million is a fairer comparison.

If you look at countries that have done well in controlling this virus many of them are Island nations. It's simply easier to control your borders when you are an island.

This is an advantage we have always had but the penny seems to have only just dropped in government.

This is part of the problem though, the 'choice' to return to work will be taken away from concerned/vulnerable individuals who'll be compelled by their employers to return to work, provided they 'stay alert'!

At the moment under lockdown you have circa 3 000 new "official" infections per day. 90 000 per month.

58 000 000/90 000 = 644 months or 53 years.

Because of insufficient testing we don't know how many people are actually getting infected which leaves us blind as to what the correct strategy is.

Oh dear dear you would make a great politician, get caught out making a false claim and instead of admitting it try and change tack, and you have tha gall to attack boris trump et al for being evasive etc.

Stop digging you are only going in deeper

You could answer the question? Do we have the second highest death toll in the world? Are you still upset about looking foolish regrading your strategy of getting an 80% infection rate by winter

Yes, I got the word rate and toll mixed up , I made a mistake . Imagine thinking that it is a good idea to infect 53 million people in the U.K. with the virus in 6 months though ? Or even 6.2 billion world wide.

How long will it take to infect 53 million people? 1 million a month? That’s over 4 years

Why a million a month ? We need 16 at least, it's a tough task but you obviously have no solution as you never put it forward. What happens next winter if we have a bad flu season as well as covid still going round? Lockdown till a vaccine comes around ? See how many die from financial destruction are you one if those who say 160,000 died from austerity how many are you prepared to lose from a huge depression. If you have a better way to balance things less hear it

16 million a month? 3.5 million a week? 500k a day? 21,500 an hour? How will they all get tested as we need to know who has had it ? What is the current COVID 19 mortality ‘rate’ in the U.K.? "

Rate of what ? Of the population, of those infected and tested or those infected ?

The only one that matters is the first as that is where all countries will be able to compare, as long as course we all count deaths the same way which is far from consistent.

In 18months or two years we can compare each countries excess deaths compared to 2018 and 19 average.

This is part of the problem though, the 'choice' to return to work will be taken away from concerned/vulnerable individuals who'll be compelled by their employers to return to work, provided they 'stay alert'!"

i should imagine the vunerable will still be told to stay at home.the concerned will have to make there own choice either get back to earning. or start claiming benefits.myself ive done the benefits thing plenty of times in the past so id rather get back to earning money

To be honest I have no idea what 'stay alert' might mean. My interpretation of it is that you should be aware of your actions and surroundings, and those of others around you, and if you feel or recognise the symptoms then react according to the advice at the time. But that is just my interpretation.

However, I don't need to speculate as I fully expect there will be something in the announcement later tonight that will explain it fully.

Have you changed your stance on that?

I doubt I said it's EXACTLY like flu, but it is LIKE flu and possibly if none of the world had ever encountered flu, less deadly. Would we having the same issues if flu was new to humans yes of course we would.

How would you be dealing with it that would balance the small risk to the majority of people against the economic destruction that continued lockdown will bring and the deaths associated with that

I would do exactly the same as Germany or New Zealand "

Well NZ is totally different, it's a tiny island with 5 million people with a fraction of people travelling to it. They did well to stop it spreading but they, according to a chap in NZ can trace all their cases from 35 people entering the country, many of whom attended a wedding, compare that to the 10 million a month to the uk, how many of those brought it here before china even admitted to it?

Germany has done a lot of testing, but what does it show apart from showing a snap shot of infection ? If you isolate them it of course slows the spread but as long as health services can treat those few who need hospital treatment that slowing of infection just slows the spread into winter which means that not only will people be catching covid they may well normal winter bugs to increase their illness.

Their death rate is low but what about total deaths compared to average ? Are they recording deaths from or with covid?

We are an island roughly the same size as New Zealand , granted their population is a lot smaller, do you think they should be aiming for an 80 % infection rate before winter as well ? Germany has a far lower death ‘rate ‘ and toll even though they are larger country than the UK

No one knows how many have died compared to infection as no one knows how many have had it due to so many not showing symptoms, its claimed anything from 10 to 90% show none.imvho testing is a red herring, the only thing that counts is that the nhs can treat those who need it, so far it has been nowhere near at capacity, could it cope with the small percent that require treatment if all 80% caught it on one day then no of course not. BUT if you keep those who are vulnerable and most likely to need treatment in isolation then there will be capacity for those who for no apparent reason need hospital help, then when we reach 80 % those 1.5 million who have letters to isolate can come out.

The message is very vague indeed. There needs to be a full set of rules to follow. I have been involved with H&S proceedures and the writing up of new ones. The thing you quickly learn is that common sense doesn't exist in H&S. Unless there's full, clear and specific instructions to follow people can interperate things very differently. We've had to cover all bases in writing them up, as there will always be somebody who just doesn't get it, even though it should be common sense. You shouldn't point a gun at anything unless you plan to shoot it, but how many accidents have happened with loaded guns been pointed at folk. Common sense to some, others just don't get it!

Except we dont have the highest death rate in europe, but hey why let facts get in the way, and you say the government is incompetent you cant even get a simple fact correct

Yes we do

NO WE DONT"

Depends on how you want to count deaths really, and it also depends a lot on how the countries are counting deaths too...

Belgium... Has been counting all deaths in hospitals and care homes that have been remotely connected to covid-19 whether tested or not from the very beginning. Cases 53000 deaths 8656

United Kingdom, only counted hospital deaths that had been confirmed for the virus... Recently started to count care home deaths.

Cases 219000 Deaths 31855

Yeah we can compare per capita and the Belgians come out ever so slightly worse, at the moment, as long as the virus is out there we can and do seem to be closing the gap.

We know that the UK's method of counting the dead has been seriously flawed from the beginning. You could say the same about the Belgian figures. When they're being revised would you like to guess which one will be revised down and which will be revised upwards?

Whilst we may not have the highest death rate, we do have the highest amount of dead in Europe, and in comparison with Belgium, by a substantial number. And that's the headline figure, if you're going to go for the per capita you also have to start looking at population densities and land mass, as there are so many variables which affect the final statistics. It's not great when your last defence against being labelled the worst effected country in Europe, is to be compared with a small country of less than 1/8th the land mass and 1/6th of the population (higher population density)...
